2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ In the Catholic calendar, the first Sunday of October is Respect Life Sunday, which kicks off Respect Like Month. The sacredness of all human life from concep on un l natural death is so important that our Church dedicates not only one weekend to it, but also an en re month. It s also important to remember that Respect Life refers to more than our Church s pro-life stance when it comes to the evil of abor on. Respect for human life also encompasses other issues that threaten the dignity of the human person, such as: euthanasia (both passive and ac ve), ar ficial contracep on, in vitro fer liza on, steriliza on, embryonic stem cells, and the death penalty (which Pope Francis has spoken about recently). Nevertheless, while all of these issues are significant in that they do not respect the sacredness of human life, the one issue that does indeed stand out is the issue of abor on and that is because of the truly staggering number of human lives that it has taken. Around 50 million lives have perished by abor on in the U.S. since 1973, when it was legalized for all nine months of pregnancy. 50 million souls and that is just in the United States alone. To draw a en on to this tragedy, our Knights of Columbus set up the Cemetery of the Innocents on our parish s front lawn on Irving Park Rd. The crosses on the lawn represent the millions of souls taken by abor on. I am grateful to our Knights for doing this every October. And keep in mind that the staggering number of 50 million does not even include the number of women who have died from safe, legal abor ons. I put that in quotes because there is no such thing as a safe abor on. Abor on is a surgical procedure, and while it may be legal, that does not mean that it is regulated; the abor on industry is the largest unregulated industry in the na on. It is an industry that has harmed genera ons of children, mothers, fathers, siblings, and grandparents. Because of this terrible reality, for most of my priesthood I have worked with Project Rachel. Project Rachel is a confiden al post-abor on healing ministry that is offered to anyone (Catholic or non-catholic) who has been hurt by abor on (mothers, fathers, extended family). If you or someone you know suffers from the pain of abor on regardless of whether the abor on(s) occurred last month or 40 years ago I encourage you to call Project Rachel at , or HOPE. On a lighter note, I want to let everyone know about two great events happening at St. Beatrice in the coming weeks. First, on Wednesday, Oct. 17 th at 7:00pm in church we will host the next event in our St. Beatrice Concert Series. It is en tled, Music, Memories, and Love Songs of a Life me. It will feature vocalist Kaylee Durow. Her songs and styles span 60 years, with a mixture of classics, contemporary, and pop, woven together with stories. Tickets are $10, and you can buy them at the rectory, or at the door on the night of the concert. And as always, I am grateful to our music director, Richard Gersten, for organizing our concerts. And later that week, on Saturday, Oct. 20 th at 6:00pm, we will host our 2 nd annual Pizzapalooza in the Parish Hall. We have asked several pizzerias in the Leyden area to donate pizzas, and everyone who a ends this event will be able to sample different types of pizzas from the different restaurants. You will then have the opportunity to cast your votes for your favorite pizzas, and the winning restaurants will be given plaques from St. Beatrice. Dessert will also be served, and we will also have drawings for raffle prizes. Tickets prices are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-12 (age 3 and under are free). Tickets are on sale this weekend and next in church a er Mass, and I highly recommend that you buy them early! Because this event was so popular last year, and because of limited space, pizzas, and volunteers, we must limit the number of ckets. So, don t risk being sold out at the door buy your ckets this weekend or next! St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gal 1:6-12; Ps 111:1b-2, 7-9, 10c; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24; Ps 139:1b-3, 13-15; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Gal 3:1-5; Lk 1:69-75; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Gal 3:7-14; Ps 111:1b-6; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Gal 3:22-29; Ps 105:2-7; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: Wis 7:7-11; Ps 90:12-17; Heb 4:12-13; Mk 10:17-30 [17-27] TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from popery to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a chapel. Catholic Emancipation was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

He loves us and made the earth for us. We are to love God above all things. We show our love for God by praying, being kind, and caring for the earth. We learned the word Amen and that it means, This is true. We learned that a Saint is a holy person who has died and now lives with God in heaven. Registration Update Registration is still open, you DO NOT need to be a member of the parish to register your child in the Religious Education Program. If you still need to register your child you can do so by contacting the Religious Education office or by arriving early before our next class on October 20 th. 2 nd Grade We talked about how this is a special year for our students because they will be receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. We learned about St. Isidore who was a very holy man and farmer. We learned that St. Isidore prayed while he worked. We learned that God created everything and that human beings are his most special and cherished creation, and because of that we must show the same love and care for one another that God shows to us.
