Third Sunday of Advent December 17, 2017 Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17
2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ This Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, is known as Gaudete Sunday, a word which means Rejoice. We rejoice on this Sunday because we are in the la er half of Advent, and the light of Christ at Christmas draws nearer. On this Sunday we light the rose candle on the Advent wreath, and the priest has the op on of wearing a rose vestment at Mass instead of a violet one. The color rose is used because it is brighter than the violet of Advent, but not quite as bright as the white that we use at Christmas. Normally Gaudete Sunday occurs around the halfway point of Advent, but this year things are a li le different. You see, there are not always four weeks of Advent, but there are always four Sundays of Advent. So, on this year, when the Fourth Sunday of Advent falls on Dec. 24 th, that means that the final week of Advent only lasts for a few hours because the evening of Dec. 24 th is, of course, Christmas Eve. So, the morning of Dec. 24 th is the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and sundown on Dec. 24 th begins the Christmas season. Because of this, I should clarify what this means for our weekend and Christmas Mass schedule. When it comes to Dec. 23, 24 & 25 this year, the main point to remember is: we are all obligated to a end Mass twice. Masses for the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be at the usual mes: at 5pm on Sat., Dec. 23 rd, and at 8am, 10am, and 12pm on Dec. 24 th. Those four Masses count only for the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The Christmas Masses will be on the usual schedule; the only difference this year is that they will begin shortly a er the Fourth Sunday of Advent Masses end. So, the Masses that will only count for Christmas are: 5pm and Midnight on Dec. 24 th, and 8am, 10am, and 12pm on Dec. 25 th. So, if someone tells you that you only need to a end one Mass next weekend, and that that will count for both Sunday and Christmas they are wrong! There are two separate obliga ons: the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and Christmas. To fulfill both of these obliga ons, you need to a end one of the Fourth Sunday of Advent Masses on Dec , and one of the Christmas Masses on Dec But before we get to Christmas, we s ll have me in this Advent season to prepare our hearts. And one of the best ways to do that is not by shopping or planning par es, but by being absolved of our sins and reconciled to God. As Catholics we do that by celebra ng the great sacrament of Reconcilia on. So, I hope you can join us for our Advent Reconcilia on Service on Monday, Dec. 18 th at 7:00pm here at St. Beatrice. Several priest confessors will be available that night. I hope you can also take me in the midst of this busy week to reflect on the meaning of Christmas, and one way to do that is by coming to our annual Christmas concert. The Reading of the Infancy Narra ve of the Lord will take place this Wednesday, Dec. 20 th at 7:00pm in church. At this concert we will listen to the Gospel stories of Christ s birth, interspersed with Christmas hymns sung by our Parish Choir. Take one hour out of your week to come and let God speak to you through His Word and through song. Finally, I d like to offer two thanks-you s this week. First, thank you to parishioner Gerry Hoss for organizing our annual Parish Christmas Party, which took place last Sunday. And thank you to everyone who took the me to come celebrate the season with your parish family. And at this me of year I also want to make sure to acknowledge and thank Sunrise Prin ng in Schiller Park. Sunrise graciously donates much of our printed items throughout the year. For example, in the past years they ve donated hundreds of dollars worth of printed materials for our funeral booklets, wedding booklets, Hypod ckets, All Souls poster, parish envelopes, and parishioner le ers. Thank you very much, Sunrise Prin ng, for your generosity and for the great materials you provide for us! St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob
3 PAGE THREE Third Sunday of Advent In today s Gospel John the Baptist says, I am the voice of one crying in the desert; make straight the way of the Lord. Let us ask for the grace to help others to know the love of the Lord. Christmas is a time of love and gift giving...please give to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who do not have clothes and food can share in the blessings of Christmas. Your donation for the wafers goes toward the continued assistance of the St Vincent de Paul Society. The tradition was carried to the New World, and finds very rich expression in Latin America today. While in Europe the presepio was reserved mostly to the homes of wealthy nobles and great churches, in Latin America it was claimed by the poor and expressed the skills of native artisans. In Mexico, you can still find clay figures in every village market. In a way, the native people took the religion of Spanish rule and baptized it with their Indian culture by surrounding the crib of Jesus with local geography and people. In Brazil, where Christmas falls in summer, the figure of the baby Jesus is wrapped in gold and gems, and set on a hillside surrounded by flowers and animals of all kinds. Sometimes there is a double presepio, presenting both Nativity and Crucifixion. In some places in Latin America, even non-religious people take care to have a presepio in the home, sometimes dedicating one whole room in the house or apartment to the scene. Some cities have markets where people from the countryside sell plants and figurines. In Cuzco, churches and families provide hot chocolate for the children of the poor who come down to help create the nativity scenes. In Paraguay, the baby Jesus grows the small infant who arrives on Christmas Eve is replaced at New Year with a toddler Jesus who holds in one hand the globe and in the other a cross. Few Christmas traditions have the vitality and variety of presepios and crèches honoring the Nativity. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

A Candle burns beside the tabernacle to remind us of Jesus presence. We also saw the Altar where Fr. Rob celebrates Mass and consecrates the bread and wine. We learned the Ambo is where the scripture readings are proclaimed during Mass. We learned to genuflect, bless ourselves with holy water, and that Jesus taught us the Our Father. 2 nd Grade We learned about the Sacrament of Reconciliation and how Jesus forgives our sins through the priest who forgives our sins in Jesus name. We learned that when the priest forgives our sins, he says a prayer called Absolution. We learned that a penance is an act or prayer that we are given to help us make up for our sins.
