VISITS TO THE SICK Communion visits are made in homes by making arrangements at the rectory. Anyone who is seriously ill or over 65 and ailing is invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. When a family member is hospitalized, please notify the rectory so that hospital visits can be made. 2 PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ On Saturday, Oct. 20 th we had our 2 nd annual Pizzapalooza. However, I needed to write this ar cle before the event took place, so I can t share yet about how it went. But in the next few weeks we will present a list of all the restaurants who generously donated pizzas for the event, as well as a list of which pizzas were voted as favorites by those who a ended the event. For now, I would like to thank not only the pizza restaurants for making Pizzapalooza possible, but I also want to thank the many parish volunteers who organized the whole event, and who not only served on the night of the event, but who also did so much behind-the-scenes work. Thank you to all! This week I would also like to share some belated news about the Renew My Church (RMC) Summit. You may remember that back on Oct. 1-2, the Chicago Archdiocese held a 2-day Summit on RMC, and every parish in the Archdiocese was invited to a end (three St. Beatrice parish representa ves and I were in a endance). Several parishioners have asked me how it went, and what came out of the Summit. In my opinion the Summit was a very nice spiritual retreat. There were several inspira onal speakers, and the two days consisted of both large group sessions and breakout sessions. There was also a lot of singing and praying, especially to the Holy Spirit (because we should always turn to the Holy Spirit when we re seeking guidance in the ways of God!) So, as a spiritual retreat the Summit worked well in that it encouraged us to come together, work together, and trust in the Holy Spirit as He leads our Archdiocese toward the future. Prac cally speaking, however, I was hoping for a bit more from the Summit. I was hoping that they would give us some specifics about how the RMC process, such as: What s been working well so far, what hasn t been working well, what have some of the specific success and challenges been for the parishes who have already begun the process? Unfortunately, they did not address any of these things in detail. I was hoping they might have had a panel discussion with members of some of the parishes that have already been ac vated in RMC, because I would like to have heard directly from them. One point that was emphasized again and again was that we are all called, by our bap sm, to evangelize. We are all called to spread the Catholic faith, to share the faith, to give witness to our faith wherever we may be. Again, the goal of RMC is not to simply have a manageable or sustainable number of parishes; the goal is to have parishes filled with parishioners who take not only their faith seriously, but who also take seriously the responsibility (again, given to us on the day of our bap sm) to proclaim the Gospel at all mes. That is the only way that our Archdiocese will be renewed not simply by having a different structure of parishes, but by having parishioners who ac vely live out their faith every day of the week. This Sunday the Church celebrates World Mission Sunday. This is fi ng, I think, because World Mission Sunday not only encourages us to pray for and support Catholic missionaries working around the world, but it also reminds us that we all have a mission to evangelize, to boldly share our belief that Jesus Christ died and rose to save the world from sin. 3 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples: Anyone among you who aspired to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all. When you give furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing. RESPECT LIFE! Our parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God s Grace, The Women s Center have saved almost 40,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in Please take a baby bottle home with you from church and return it on November 7, This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottle cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. It s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest,sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism. Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. October s prayer: Angel of God. 6 th Grade We discussed the Feast of the Archangels on September 29 th. We learned about St. Michael the Warrior Angel, St. Gabriel The Messenger Angel, and St. Raphael The Protecting Angel. We learned that St. Michael fought against Satan s army and won. St. Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus and told Zechariah that he and his wife would have a son. St. Raphael assisted Tobias on his long journey and helped him to find a wife, collect money and help his father, Tobit, regain his sight. 7 th Grade We learned that Jesus had two natures, he was fully human and fully divine. He was born of a human mother and taken care of as any other human baby would be. Even though he was the Son of God, he chose to be a man like us in order to show us how to live a full life. 8 th Grade The choices we make and how we live our lives are influenced by how we worship and pray. The symbol and rituals of liturgy help us to come closer to God, strengthening our spiritual lives. Stronger spiritual lives help us in turn to strengthen our morality helping us to live by Jesus example.
