What Makes a Dad God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it... Dad ~~Author Unknown.~~

4 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 4 R.C.I.A. Exploring your experience: The key symbol of Baptism is water. To help you to explore the power of water, read the following story. Then try to discover additional aspects of water looking at the ocean. A young mad in his mid-twenties stood and breathed in deeply the fresh mountain valley air, moist from several rainfalls that had drenched the valley. It had been sunny and warm earlier in the month, but now dark skies threatened to saturate the valley once again. The month of June had always seemed beautiful before, but this year, as June neared its final week, the skies looked ominous. The young man, his wife, and their infant son had been visiting the old family home near the river, on their way to a new life in another city. How wonderful it was, after four years away, to return to family and friends in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. However, they and the many others in the valley were unprepared for what was about to happen. Before dawn on the twenty-third of the month, sirens blared with an uncomfortable roar. They wailed increasingly. What was going on? Why an air raid drill at this time of the night? Who would have expected the river to swell to such proportions that not even the enormous dikes could contain the raging river waters? The sirens were signaling a call to evacuate, to move to higher ground. The valley would become a swampland unless the river could be contained. Many volunteers loaded sandbags to shore up the dikes. Hour after hour the bags were filled and piled high. Workers formed teams, taking breaks more frequently as exhaustion set in. The river, however, would not be denied. A final siren sounded with a shrill beeping tone, warning the volunteers to leave the area as quickly as possible. They were less than three-quarters of a mile from the dike, and it was starting to surrender to the powerful onslaught. The young man recalls running from the sandbag area. My family! he thought. Where are they? Is this the end? As he found his family and neighbors, he learned that since their houses were built on a hill, far enough from the river, they would probably be spared the dangerous water. Still, there was much to be done. For three days, the water rose. Slowly, deliberately, it engulfed the valley. River towns became underwater villages. Some parts of the valley were cut off from neighboring towns, inundated by overflowing creeks. The young couple and their child would eventually seek shelter more than a hundred miles away, with relatives. But for now, the people in the higher elevations had to plan to help those whose homes were slowly succumbing to the raging river. To be continued next week... Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time LABOR SHORTAGE Jesus explained two thousand years ago what we know to be true that the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few (Matthew 9:37). We are always searching for more laborers for the harvest of the Master. Among all the baptized, priests and others who have chosen a religious life have given over their entire lives to be laborers in God s vineyard. They have answered God s call in a unique way to work the harvest and to proclaim by word and action like Peter, Andrew, and the rest of the Twelve that the kingdom of heaven is indeed at hand. We know that God will not leave us as sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36), and so we trust that our prayers and efforts will yield the shepherds that God desires for us. LABOR SUPPLY Just as the people of Israel were a nation of priests and a holy people, so are we all who bear the name of Christ. Jesus died for all of us. This alone justifies us and makes us holy to the point of salvation. That s how Paul sees it anyway. And in thinking about it, isn t every man, woman, and child who lives out the gospel message a priest in his or her own right, reconciled to the Father by Jesus? After all, at our baptism, each of us is received into the royal priesthood of the baptized. Here the sheep image breaks down a little, for each of us can be shepherd as well as sheep. Each of us is called to be a shepherd in some way, if only for one other person. Our Lord was moved at the sight of the crowds aching for God s touch. Well, the crowds are still forming, so let us all join together, priests, religious, and all the baptized, in the work that must be done, for we are all called to bring Christ to the world. The nineteenth-century American orator and agnostic Robert Green Ingersoll said that love is the only priest. If this is true, then let us bring all the love we have to our neighbors, giving without cost. As a nation of priests and holy people, a bountiful harvest is our highest calling. 5 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ORDINATION Fr. JUAN LOPEZ! Fr. Juan will be celebrating his Mass of Thanksgiving here at Holy Name this Sunday at 9:30 A.M. A simple reception follows after the Mass at the Flanagan Center. Happy Father's Day Any man can be a Father, but it takes a special person to be called Dad. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in Holy Name has teamed up with ParishPay allowing parishioners & school parents to make contributions to their regular and special offerings electronically and automatically, using their credit card or checking account. There are three easy ways of signing up with ParishPay. 1. Go online to 2. Call toll free: Parish1 ( ) 3. OR Fill it this form and have the Parish Staff do the work for you. Mail or drop off form to Holy Name Pastoral Center (former Convent) th Ave. San Francisco, CA Name: Address: City: Zip: Username (optional): Password (optional): Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day. 6 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 6 HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Family, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank our retirees Mrs. Brugnara and Mrs. Mooney. Mrs. Brugnara has nurtured and nourished Holy Name students in her classroom for twenty years. In her warm, gentle and faith filled way she has helped hundreds of students and their families navigate the waters of elementary school. Mrs. Mooney has been a smiling face and cheerful voice in the Holy Name School office for ten wonderful years. As one of the first greeters of new people and helpful nurse to the injured she has created the gold standard of care. These women have been a very real and important part of this school for a combined thirty years. We wish them the very best of all things in their retirement, rest, fun, time with family, and all the love they have given here for so many years. Thank you also to Nancy Lau who is retiring this year as well. Mrs. Lau has served Holy Name as a faithful aide in Extended Care, as a teacher in the Chinese School and as Director of that program for the past two years. May her retirement be blessed; we send her off with much gratitude. I also want to offer my deep thanks to Mrs. Mixsell for the enriching ten years she has given to Holy Name and the students and families she has served. There are so many, students and parents alike, who will not ever forget the fabulous learning experiences connected to the fun and growth filled field trips that were so much a part of her program. In addition, a very big thank you is offered to Ms. Birck. Though she was only at Holy Name for two years she enlivened the junior high program with her gifts and love of students. She also brought a great deal to the faculty/staff with her enthusiasm for learning and her willingness to take on any task. We will miss both of these wonderful women and wish them every success in the future. It has been a true joy for me to get to know your delightful children during the past two years. It is their great smiles and hugs that made my day, every day. I wish you and your whole family a wonderful summer. I hope you have time to enjoy each other, relax, and play in the sun.
