May it be Thy house, Thy dwelling, O Lord, Where Thy Name is worshipped, honored, and adored. ~Pastor Doug DeMar~ -9- Church News This Week at First United June 26 July 2 Friday Office closed Canada Day Peanut Butter for Volunteer Centre Commitment December 31, Total to Date 525 To meet our obligation, we will need to collect jars of peanut butter per week. The Volunteer Center supplies, on average, 500 households monthly. The Upper Room for July and Aug. are in the Narthex. Please feel free to take one. A container for donations is located with the publication. Summer Hours: Until the end of August the church office hours will be Tuesday Friday, 8-4. Closed To enter the church or office during business hours, please use the St. Patrick Street entrance. A CD titled "Reflections on the Bay" is now available. It features a variety of piano and organ music by Linda Knowles MacPherson, as well as several selections including clarinet (Donald Eddy), and guitar (Archie Fowlie). A copy may be obtained with a donation to First United Church. Linda's previous CD's "Notes From the Bay" and "Christmas on the Bay" continue to be available and have, to date, raised $2, towards the Ministry of Music at First United. Community Events The Annual Cemetery Service of the Stonehaven- New Bandon Union Cemetery Inc. will be held at the cemetery chapel at 1:30 pm, June 26, Everyone is welcome. The Annual Meeting regarding business of the cemeteries is planned for Tuesday, July 5 th, 2016, 7:00pm in the cemetery chapel. -10-

6 2 Kings 2:1-2 New International Version (NIV) Elijah Taken Up to Heaven 2 When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; the LORD has sent me to Bethel. But Elisha said, As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. So the two of them walked on. 7 Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. 8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you? Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit, Elisha replied. 10 You have asked a difficult thing, Elijah said, yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours otherwise, it will not. 11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel! And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah? he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. Luke 9:51-62 New International Version (NIV) Samaritan Opposition 51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them [a]? 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village. The Cost of Following Jesus 57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, I will follow you wherever you go. 58 Jesus replied, Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. 59 He said to another man, Follow me.

7 But he replied, Lord, first let me go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God. 61 Still another said, I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family. 62 Jesus replied, No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.
