4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Parish Festival 2014: I thank God and everyone involved in the organization and running of our parish festival. It was a big success. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a joy for me to look at the children enjoying themselves on the rides and with food and other fun activities. We had great weather, good food, great music and performers, a good turnout, and a lot of visitors from other towns and parishes. With the Festival Chairs, Michael and Claudia Tringale, so many people collaborated from the Guild, the Men s Club, the offices of the school and parish. It was a well-organized, well-coordinated Festival. The new location for the stage turned out to be really nice. Change is good! We have to keep responding to changed situations and circumstances and be flexible and creative. The raffle was a big success. The bankers came up with a good plan of securing and counting the money. I was impressed with this new procedure. People seemed to be having a lot of fun at all the booths, including the bar. I had the pleasure of enjoying a lot of these blessings. I particularly enjoyed the Jazz on Sunday afternoon. There was one song in their performance which I couldn t resist asking for an encore: Donna Summer s She works hard for the money, so hard for it honey, so you better treat her right. All in all, it was a wonderful, enjoyable, and successful Festival. Here are the benefits of the Festival, as I see them: We helped bring people together. In working together, we have deepened our friendships. Many people have let their leadership and creative roles come into play. Children were given a great fun time. In the process, we raised money for the school and the parish. It was a win-win situation for everyone. Thank you, Claudia and Michael, for the excellent job! Thank you, all the booth chairs and heads of various activities and organizations of the Festival. You let your light shine at the Festival. It s burning brightly dispelling darkness, giving everyone warmth, comfort, and joy. Capital Campaign Update: It was heartening to see that some of you have been generous in buying the bricks and tiles to leave your mark on our campus and to help fund Phase 3 of the repavement/beautification project. Sharon Oosterman, Terri Ciardella and Jeanne Dimech worked hard the whole of the Festival assisting the brick-and tilebuyers with their purchases. Here s an update coming from Terri Ciardella: Thank you to all those who stopped by the Capital Campaign table this past Festival weekend. It was great to meet so many of you who we have been communicating with via phone and . And we especially enjoyed being able to say thank you to so many people in person. The overall feedback of the project has been amazing. It was heartwarming to see people walk through the Legacy Courtyard reading the bricks and tiles. And who would have thought that the Courtyard would turn into a dance floor Friday and Saturday night? What a great sight to behold! The response for bricks and tiles was tremendous! Thank you to all who placed orders. Soon the blank bricks in the Courtyard will be replaced with more members of our community. And our Legacy wall will be growing. This is a very exciting time. All the money raised will be going toward Phase 3 - the repaving of the upper parking lot. We are currently processing the orders placed this weekend and beginning to work on our annual financial update. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Word of God: Christian Excellence: The second reading this weekend is one of my favorites. In the letter to the Philippians, Paul exhorts the new Christians to excel in everything that God is calling them to be. He says: Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. This could be a summary of what we seek as Christians, as disciples and apostles of Jesus: to be the best that we can be for God, family, community, the nation, and the world. One of the things I tell children is to put their heart and soul into everything they do, be it studies, prayer in church, sports, eating, entertainment, etc. God wants us to give him our best. To God only the superlative best from us will do. To Be a Christian Steward: A Summary of the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship---(continued) A Steward's Way: The life of a Christian steward models the life of Jesus. It is challenging and even difficult, in many respects, yet intense joy comes to those who take the risk to live as Christian stewards. Women and men who seek to live as stewards learn that all things work for good for those who love God (Rom 8:28). After Jesus, we look to Mary as an ideal steward. As the Mother of Christ, she lived her ministry in a spirit of fidelity and service; she responded generously to the call. We must ask ourselves: Do we also wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ and Christian stewards of our world and our Church? Central to our human and Christian vocations, as well as to the unique vocation each one of us receives from God, is that we be good stewards of the gifts we possess. God gives us this divine-human workshop, this world and Church of ours. The Spirit shows us the way. Stewardship is a part of that journey. (concluded). Catholic Jokes: After the Faith Formation teacher had read the story of the prodigal son, she asked, What does it mean to waste your substance on riotous living? Sevenyear-old Tim spoke up: It means to spend all your money on bubble gum. Five-year-old Kate was taken to church for the first time. On the way home, she asked, If that is God s house, how come there are cracks in the ceiling? Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

October 11 (S), 18 (full) November 1, 8 (S), 15 December 6, 13 (S), Dates TBA Preparation classes for parents and godparents are held monthly on Tuesdays as noted: Reflecting on the Word The parable in today s Gospel is a little odd. The actions of the tenants don t really make a whole lot of sense. Do they really think that if they kill the son of the vineyard s owner they will become heirs to the property in his place? This is not the way that inheritance usually works. The tenants do not seem to be very realistic about the owner s response to their actions and may even be suffering some form of madness. And yet, there is something familiar about the senseless actions of the tenants. Do not we humans sometimes act as if by rejecting God we will inherit the world? Do we not reject the message of Jesus in the insane hope of being able to live by our own rules? The idea that a violent rejection of God can turn us from servants into masters is perhaps more common than we might think. But the fact remains that we are tenants in a vineyard that belongs to God. All of the fruit that we bear in this life belongs to God, because ultimately it comes from God, who is the source of all good gifts. If we, as God s servants, give up the delusion of being our own masters and hold fast to what is true and honorable, lovely and gracious, then we will discover that God is not an angry taskmaster calling us to account, but the God of peace who, Paul tell us in the second reading, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. For Prayerful Consideration and Discussion: How have I tried to live as my own master, rather than as one who lives to serve God? Do I see God as a God of peace who guards me, or as a God who is constantly making demands on me? - from Living the Word October 14 (full) November 11 December Dates TBA Classes are conducted in the Pastoral Center from 7:30-9:00 p.m. (Adults only please). Please call the Parish Office at to reserve your space for the Baptismal Preparation Classes.
