4 From Archbishop Cordileone - emergency collection Prayer for those Affected by Hurricane Harvey All powerful God, comforter of the afflicted, we pray that you will provide much-needed consolation to all those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Grant mercy to all those who died as a result of this storm and bring comfort to the grieving. Find the lost, strengthen the weary, encourage the hopeless, and provide for all those who have been displaced and who have lost so very much. Thank you for the selfless first responders and everyday hero-citizens who risked their own safety to rescue others. We trust in your providential care to help all the victims of this storm rebuild and overcome every hardship. Adult and Youth Faith Formation The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program began Sunday, August 27, but will continue to accept registrations for through September 30. Please contact the office. New and continuing registration is being accepted for the Faith Formation program through September 30. Registration forms are on the parish website, under the Faith Formation tab, or may be requested by calling the parish office at ext Forms are available in Spanish at the parish office. Please register your child/children ASAP. Classes begin Sept. 9 & 13. Special Needs classes begin Sept. 30. A reminder that preparation for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are each two-year programs, beginning no earlier than first grade for Communion and no earlier than 8th grade for Confirmation.

6 It is with great joy that we welcome into our church and community the following children who received the Sacrament of Baptism at our Church on Saturday, September 2, 2017 Penelope Campos Isaiah Carcamo Reflecting on the Word Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Are you familiar with the principle of subsidiarity? First go to the lowest level needed to settle a conflict. Go first to your brother or sister. If that settles it, all is well. If not, move up to the next level of authority. If that does not settle the situation, take witnesses to ensure fairness to you and your opponent. If that does not bring resolution, invoke the entire community. If that doesn t work, treat the person like an outsider. Treating someone like a Gentile or tax collector can mean ignoring and mistreating the person. Faithful Jews thought of Gentiles and sinners as unworthy of respect. Others apply Jesus teaching about loving one s neighbor, even one s enemy, love to the outsider: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. In other words, even tough love includes basic respect. Tough love sets boundaries that can separate someone from the community until the person chooses to change. It s their choice. That s Ezekiel s message: Tell the wicked one what needs to change. They must make the choice. If we speak, we have done our part. If we do not speak out, then we will be held responsible for the actions of the wicked. St. Catherine of Siena said, Speak the truth in love. That s how God treats us, even when we turn away from God. Speak from the desire that the other will change, not to destroy them. This requires inner subsidiarity to God s spirit within us. It also requires being caring rather than judgmental - again, like God treats us. Speak in the way that you would want someone to speak to you. Love your neighbor as yourself. Seek not to do evil to your neighbor and thus fulfill the law. Prayer of the Archdiocese of San Francisco to the Immaculate Heart of Mary O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when you appeared in Fatima one hundred years ago, you desired that the Church should take refuge in your Immaculate Heart as a means that leads to Jesus, who is the way to the Father. Heeding your call, we entrust ourselves, our families, our parish, and our Archdiocese to the care and protection of your Immaculate Heart. As we prepare ourselves, through humble expressions of devotion, for the Consecration of our Archdiocese to your Immaculate Heart, inspire in us the longing to know, love, and follow your beloved son Jesus Christ. 8 PREPARING FOR THE CONSECRATION OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, Part 18 & 19 AS JULY GAVE WAY TO AUGUST in 1917, the three little shepherd children of Fatima were already deeply engaged in suffering persecutions for the salvation of the world. The local political authorities now were interested in ensuring that the Message of Our Lady would not be able to shed its light in the darkness of the falling West. Arturo da Oliveira Santos was the Administrator of the Council of Ourem, seven miles from Fatima. He was like the mayor of the area in which the children lived. The 33-year old Administrator had left the practice of the Catholic faith and was deeply involved in Freemasonry, which he had joined in 1910, the year of the anti-catholic revolution in Portugal. Administrator Santos hated the Catholic Church. Shortly before the expected arrival of Our Lady on August 13, Administrator Santos sent notice to the fathers of the three children that he wanted to question them about the purported supernatural apparitions, which he viewed to be disturbing the public peace. On August 11, Manuel Marto, refusing to send his children on the relatively long journey to Ourem, appeared before the Administrator on their behalf. Lucia s father, who had never believed the apparitions, journeyed the seven miles with his daughter riding a donkey, from which she fell three times along the way. The young Lucia must have understood by her three falls that she was being conformed to the Way of the Cross. The wicked Administrator interrogated 10-year old Lucia intensively about the secret of the apparition, threatening in the presence of her father and Mr. Marto to kill her if she did not reveal it. After she refused, even in the midst of threats to her life, he let her go. The next day, the Administrator visited the children at their homes, demanding that they not go to the Cova da Iria for the expected apparition on the following day. The children refused, again in the midst of threats, for the Blessed Mother had commanded them to come to the Cova on the 13th of the month. The Administrator suggested that they all speak with the parish priest the following morning, the day of the apparition. On August 13, the children were driven by the Administrator himself, along with their parents, to the house of their parish priest, Father Ferreira. It seems that the parish priest had been overcome by the threats of the authorities, for he scolded the children when they arrived, calling them liars and threatening them with condemnation to Hell. The children had been promised Heaven by Our Lady and they remained at peace and resolute that they must visit the Cova. With the failure of this last attempt of abusing the authority of their parish priest, Administrator Santos flew into a diabolic rage. He seized the children, securing them in the cargo hold of his wagon, covering them with blankets so that they could not be seen by pilgrims on the way, and, cracking the whip over his horse, drove them nine miles to the municipality jail at Vila Nova de Ourem. For the first time since she had visited them, the children would not be able to keep their appointment with the Lady from Heaven. OUR LADY S APPARITION ON AUGUST 13 was scheduled to take place, as she had promised and fulfilled three times before, at 12 noon. At the midday hour, the children were in the custody of the evil Administrator in Ourem. Six thousand people had assembled at the Cova da Iria to await the fourth apparition of Our Lady. As at the previous apparitions, at midday the external signs of her arrival appeared. Warren Carroll paints the picture for us in his excellent history of 1917, Red Banners, White Mantle: A faint murmur, like very distant thunder, was heard; then something came like a white shadow, glimmering, gossamer, floating down upon the little tree where all the apparitions had occurred. But this time there was no one there to recognize or greet the Lady; a moment later the wraith-like cloud rose again from the tree and faded into the sky. As the bemused people looked about, they found themselves and all the surrounding earth and foliage bathed in brilliant rainbow colors. What a profound image of the wickedness of the age! The Mother of God had come to visit and no one was there to receive her! Had the wicked Administrator defeated the Mother of God? He certainly had not defeated her three little shepherd children. Amidst the trials of their imprisonment, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta maintained the truth of the apparitions of Our Lady. They had been thrown into the common room of the town jail, amidst the general population of the local criminals. There, in that very dangerous and unseemly environment, they knelt down on the floor and began to recite the Holy Rosary. Many of the prisoners (children, also, of the Lady, let us not forget!) knelt down to join them in prayer. After the Rosary, when 7-year old Jacinta cried for her mother, the prisoners sang and danced to cheer her up. History records that at least one thief was permanently converted by his experience with the three children of Fatima. The three holy children had turned their hellish prison into a sanctuary of heavenly love. The Blessed Mother visited Portugal on August 13 not only in her own person at the Cova, but also in the holiness of her children in the prison of Ourem. Compiled by Fr.
