4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, How Good it is to Return to St. Veronica!: As you know, I have been away the last two months of June and July. It really feels good to return to the parish, which I have been part of for nine years. I hope you have been doing well, keeping good health, and continuing the journey of life with peace and happiness. That s what we all have in common: the journey. It s being on the way, whether we like to be on it or not. No matter who we are, where we are from, what our situations are --we are on a journey. We are always moving forward. Months and years go by, and we wonder how time has flowed like a river --- and continues to flow --- inexorably toward our finite destinations, and ultimately, toward our final destination. What we do on this journey, how we love, and what kind of meaning we bring for ourselves and others gives purpose and direction to our journey. I have missed you all while being away these two months --- for the simple reason that you have become part of the fabric of my life. Let s celebrate the gift of our journey together. Let s move forward with the blessings that God has given us and encounter Jesus on the way as the disciples of Emmaus did --- and go about finding happiness and grace, despite our sadnesses and sinfulness. My Spanish Studies in San Antonio: As part of my six -month long sabbatical, I spent two months studying Spanish in Mexican American Catholic College (MACC) in San Antonio, TX. It was an intensive pastoral Spanish course. Classes started at 8:00 a.m. and went on till Mass in Spanish and lunch. Again classes and some conversation sessions in the afternoon. I have had the pleasure of celebrating some Masses in Spanish already, though I cheated by giving homilies in English. I felt as if I was back in elementary school, carrying my backpack of heavy books to the classroom and sitting through classes the whole day. Learning a new language is a vulnerable experience because it highlights the lack of knowledge and calls for humility. One has to start from scratch! Grammar, vocabulary, idioms, reading, comprehension, and conversation are not easy to come by. I have tried to put my heart and soul into the Spanish learning, knowing that this is related to mission and ministry, especially toward the Spanish-speaking people in our parish and the Archdiocese. I think I have acquired pretty good tools to learn how to learn and continue to work on Spanish in the future. Meanwhile, thank you for your patience. Culture: The people who run this college are highly hospitable and kind, always ready to help. The accommodation, environment, and food were excellent. There were 26 students divided into four different groups for classes. The weather was really hot, but we didn t feel it in the air-conditioned buildings we stayed in. The college is also a cultural center. So there was a lot more than the Spanish language. We were introduced to faith, culture, tradition, and history of Hispanics through celebrations and lectures. San Antonio Attractions: I took the opportunity to visit the city and did the River Walk, I think, four different times; visited the five San Antonio Missions, including the famous Alamo (Remember the Alamo?); the Catholic Cathedral, and the famous laser beam show projected on the façade of the Cathedral. All in all, San Antonio was a memorable place for study, faith, and culture. I came away with a deeper appreciation and affection for the culture of the Spanishspeaking people in the Americas. As you may know, about 40% of U.S. Catholics are Hispanic. Since 1960, 71% of the U.S. Catholic population growth has been due to the growth in the number of Hispanics in the U.S. population overall (USCCB). Convocation of Catholic Leaders: At the end of June I went from San Antonio to Orlando, FL, for four days to attend the Convocation of Catholic Leaders. It was attended by all bishops of the U.S. and the delegations from their dioceses. The theme was Missionary Discipleship. More about it in the next bulletin. Think About It: The best project you'll ever work on is YOU. Jesuit Jokes: The right question: A Franciscan and a Jesuit were friends. They were both smokers who found it difficult to pray for a long period of time without having a cigarette. They decided to go to their superiors and ask permission to smoke. When they met again, the Franciscan was downcast. He said, I asked my superior if I could smoke while I pray and he said no. The Jesuit smiled. I asked if I could pray while I smoke. He said of course. A Vocation: A mother went to her pastor and explained that her son seemed very interested in becoming a priest. She asked what this would require. The priest began to explain. If he wants to become a diocesan priest, he ll have to study for eight years. If he wants to become a Franciscan, he ll have to study for ten years. If he wants to become a Jesuit, he ll have to study for fourteen years. The mother listened carefully, and as the priest concluded, her eyes brightened. Sign him up for that last one, Father. He s a little slow! Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.; games begin at 7:00 p.m. Reflecting on the Word Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time I recently spoke with a woman about why she went to visit her husband in an assisted living facility every day, even though Alzheimer s disease kept him from recognizing her as his wife of sixty-plus years. Without missing a beat she said, Because I love him and he would do the same for me. She added, And as much as I love him, I know that after he s gone only my faith will support me and keep us connected until we are in heaven, where he ll recognize me again. Their marital love is a great treasure to her. Her faith is her pearl of great price and the net in which they will be collected together again. What wisdom! The things of this world pass away, even those we love. Only our faith in God is with us at all times, through thick and thin, sickness and health, from death to eternal life. Solomon asks God for the wisdom of faith: Give [me] an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong (1 Kings 3:9). Our psalm echoes these words The revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple (Psalm 119:130). Faith in God is the only treasure that remains with us when all else is gone and all other paths fail. St. Francis de Sales offered a prayer for wisdom that went something like this: Lord Jesus, I surrender to you. Make me a lute that you play. Touch any string and allow me to make music in harmony with you. Faith gives us the wisdom to love as Christ loved, live as he lived, and surrender all for that greatest treasure. Therein lies wisdom at all times! For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion Who or what is my pearl of great price? What role does my faith play in the decisions I make, whether big or small? - Living the Word Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at Baptisms are generally celebrated monthly on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English and on occasional 2nd Saturdays in Spanish. 8 PREPARING FOR THE CONSECRATION OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, Part 10 & 11 Stained glass, Our Lady of Fatima Chapel, Pequannock, New Jersey THE LULL IN THE HOSTILITIES continued into June. On the 13th of the month, the children returned at midday to the Cova da Iria to receive the second promised apparition of the Lady. About 50 people joined with them to witness the event. It was the great feast of St. Anthony of Padua, greatly celebrated in Portugal, where he was born. In Portugal, the feast of St. Anthony is the feast of children because of his devotion to the Child Jesus. Lucia s parents had hoped that the St. Anthony festivities would distract her from her appointment with the Lady from Heaven, but Lucia was faithful. Lucia tells us what happened: After having said the rosary with Jacinta and Francisco and other people who were present, we saw again the reflection of light nearing us, (we used to say it was lightning), and following, Our Lady on the holm oak as in May. Please tell me, Madam, what it is that you want of me? I want you to come here on the thirteenth of next month. I want you to continue saying the Rosary every day. And after each one of the mysteries, my children, I want you to pray in this way: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fire of hell. Take all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need. I want you to learn to read and write, and later I will tell you what else I want of you. Will you take us to heaven? Yes, I shall take Jacinta and Francisco soon, but you will remain a little longer, since Jesus wishes you to make me known and loved on earth. He wishes also for you to establish devotion in the world to my Immaculate Heart. Must I remain in the world alone? Not alone, my child, and you must not be sad. I will be with you always, and my Immaculate Heart will be your comfort and the way which will lead you to God. The moment she said the last words, opening her hands, She transmitted to us, for the second time, the reflection of that intense light. In it we felt we were submerged in God. Jacinta and Francisco seemed to be in that part of the light which was rising to Heaven, and I in the part spreading over the earth. In front of the palm of Our Lady's right hand was a heart encircled with thorns which appeared to pierce it. We understood it was the Immaculate Heart of Mary offended by the sins of mankind, craving reparation. THE JUNE APPARITION CONCLUDED in the same manner as the first one in May, with Our Lady departing towards the east, from which she had come, and disappearing into the immensity of heaven. The upper leaves of the little holm oak tree remained for several hours stretched and bent towards the east. The pattern of the communication of Our Lady with the children remained the same as before: she conversed with Lucia, who could both see her and hear her. St. Jacinta could see her and hear her. St. Francisco could only see her and could not hear her. The 50 or so persons present at the June apparition were a consolation to the three children. The onlookers knew something special had happened. None of them saw Our Lady, but Maria Carreira reported hearing a faint sound, like the buzzing of a bee, from the top of the tree when Lucia reported that Our Lady was speaking to her. Others noticed the brief dimming of the sun s light and the bending of the branches and leaves of the tree. Other saw the lightning and a little gray cloud that came and went as the apparition did. Despite these gifts of consolation, the children were faced with a great deal of suffering from the incredulity of those closest to them. Their mothers especially were alarmed by the apparitions, as the intensity of the situation was now increasing. Their parish priest, Father Manuel Ferreira, suspected that the apparitions might be real but of demonic origin. On June 14, he closely questioned the children and concluded that they were not lying. When he suggested that they might be from the devil, the children indignantly rejected the idea. In the end, the careful priest could not make up his mind about the origin of the apparitions, even as he concluded that the children were telling the truth. The doubt of Fr. Ferreira would become a month-long spiritual and emotional trial for Lucia, who greatly respected the authority of her pastor. Her heart would be eased at the next month s apparition, in which Our Lady would reveal to her a great secret. In my second account I have already described in detail the doubt which tormented me from 13 June until 13 July, Lucia wrote, and how it disappeared completely during the Apparition on that day.
