4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Archbishop s Annual Appeal 2015 (AAA): Last weekend we launched the month-long campaign for AAA. I preached at all the Masses as I have done in the past six years. My request was on the basis of our continuing and completing the mission of Jesus Christ who prays all by himself and plunges into a hectic life of ministry to help, heal, enlighten, and transform the world. The Archdiocese of San Francisco, entrusted with the preaching of the Gospel, seeks our support and collaboration. We are delighted to be of help so that the life of Christ may be made manifest in the three counties of the Archdiocese through a life of faith and service. When we assist the Archdiocese, we are actually assisting ourselves because we are not only part of the Archdiocese, we are the Archdiocese! Starting this weekend, we are placing the names of donors of AAA 2015 in the bulletin. I am proud to acknowledge and thank you for your support. May I invite everyone to participate in AAA and make a success of it in the next two or three weeks. Our completing AAA within a month has become legendary and is the talk of other parishes. We get it done as quickly as possible and never talk about it for the rest of the year. This year our AAA amount is $49,000. Can you prayerfully consider donating generously? I thank you in advance for your joyful, energetic participation in AAA School First Reconciliation: Saturday, Feb. 07 was the First Reconciliation of the school second graders. Thirty-seven of them received this second sacrament in their life. It is a beautiful spiritual event both for the children and their families. It is also a cute event: the little children being a bit apprehensive and nervous and coming up to the priest and confessing their sins. This sight is worthy of paintings and poetry. Innocence meets God s grace and shines forth with special grace and joy. Sixth Grade Mass: Last Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, it was the turn of the sixth grade children from our school and Faith Formation to attend, along with their families. They get to read various readings, prayers, and announcements, and take up the collection, bring up the gifts and distribute the bulletins. In the process, they grow in their love for the Church and their confidence as they go about serving God and His people. Being part of the community of believers is a blessing. As a faith-family, we pray together and seek blessings and guidance for our lives. Congratulations, sixth graders! You did a fine job! Congrats, parents, on your participation in such faith activities. Let s all post Faith on our calendars, especially on weekends! Crab Bash: I would like to appreciate and thank the Men s Club for their excellent work with the Crab meal last Saturday. It was well attended. The food was delicious. There was a happy and animated conversation at all the tables. There were many raffle gifts. Everyone seemed to enjoy the dancing. It brought people together. Much team work was in evidence. The fund-raising was achieved. All in all, it was a very successful event. Men s Club! Keep doing all your good work! Quotes from Jonathan Livingston Seagull, our next Book Club Reading: It was morning, and the new sun sparkled gold across the ripples of a gentle sea. To fly as fast as thought, to anywhere that is, you must begin by knowing that you have already arrived. Heaven is not a place, and it is not a time. Heaven is being perfect. Jonathan Seagull discovered that boredom and fear and anger are the reasons that a gull's life is so short, and with those gone from his thought, he lived a long fine life indeed. He was not bone and feather but a perfect idea of freedom and flight, limited by nothing at all. The gull sees farthest who flies highest. You have the freedom to be yourself, your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way. Don t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly. Jonathan sighed. The price of being misunderstood, he thought. They call you devil or they call you god. John the 23 rd Jokes: Not long after he was elected pope, Saint John was walking in the streets of Rome. A woman passed him and said to her friend, My God, he s so fat! Overhearing what she said, he turned around and replied, Madame, I trust you understand that the papal conclave is not exactly a beauty contest. When a cardinal complained that a rise in Vatican salaries meant a particular usher earned as much as the cardinal, the pope remarked: That usher has 10 children; I hope the cardinal doesn t. When he went to visit a friend at the nearby Hospital of the Holy Spirit in the evening, the nun answering the door said: Holy Father, I'm the mother superior of the Holy Spirit. He replied: Lucky you! What a job! I m just the servant of the servants of God. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

6 It is with great joy that we welcome into our church and community the following children who received the Sacrament of Baptism at our Church on Saturday, February 7, 2015 Ameera Nancy-Peter Azar Gabriella Janeth-Peter Azar (from our St. Veronica Catholic School on Feb. 5) Kylie Sophia Castillo Alexander Naghipour Roman Humberto Valle Reflecting on the Word Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time There is a striking contrast between what happens to a person with leprosy in the first reading and what happens in the Gospel. In the first reading, the role of the priest is to identify the disease so that the leper can be declared unclean - which means ritually impure and thus excluded from the worship of God. The afflicted person must dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp, not simply out of fear of contagion, but because his affliction does not fit with the ideal of purity that is thought to befit those who worship the God of Israel. In the Gospel, however, Jesus does not simply identify impurity but becomes the source of purity. The leper comes to Jesus with the faith that, unlike the priests, Jesus has the power to make him clean, to reintegrate him into the community of Israel. Indeed, in telling the man to go and show himself to the priests, Jesus seems to reaffirm the role of the priests as those who can identify purity and impurity, but he gives to himself a much higher role: the one who bestows the wholeness and healing that makes it possible to be a part of God s people. In the sacrament of baptism, Jesus does for us what he does for the man in the Gospel: we are healed of our spiritual infirmities so that we can become a part of the community of those who worship God. To each of us who ask him for cleansing from sin he says, I do will it. Be made clean. For prayerful consideration and discussion: Who or what do I consider unclean? Does Jesus feel the same way I do? Have I ever felt excluded by others who saw me as unworthy of inclusion in a group? Praying with the Word Jesus, source of compassionate healing, we ask you to make us whole in body and in spirit, so that we might offer ourselves as a worthy gift to God. Amen. - from Living the Word Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at Baptisms are generally celebrated each month on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English and the 2nd Saturday in Spanish.
