4 From the Pastor s Desk - A Spiritual Reflection Dear Parishioners, GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE AND HASTE. DESIDERATA Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. (Desiderata means Desired Things, by Max Ehrmann, c.1927) Reflection: Happy New Year! We have not only celebrated Christmas and the New Year but also survived them despite the noise and the haste. It is time now to take a deep breath and sit back and luxuriate in the deeper meaning of the season: Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. We can give glory to God by being the kind of persons God wants us to be. In His plan and will for us, He wants us to be deeply human, to grow in the image and likeness of God, and to reflect God. In short, we are called to be fully human and fully alive. If we can grow to be the persons God wants us to be, then it is the best way we can give glory to God. Hence the insight of St. Irenaeus: The glory of God is the human person fully alive. Giving glory to God by being fully and deeply human necessarily entails entering the realm of peace, which God gives to His people as a precious gift in this season. We search for peace within ourselves. If we become a bit more deeply aware of ourselves, we will know that there are wars raging within us: between the body and soul, the mind and the heart. There are wars in our family, among our friends, relatives, and co-workers. There are other wars in society such as culture wars, gender wars, generation wars, and class wars, those wars based on our beliefs, politics, economics, environment, and the changing mores of behavior. At the international level, we are all too familiar with the wars being waged on the basis of religion and ethnicity. Dictators rule to the point of destruction, driving millions into exile. The dangerous militant groups have redefined barbarity. Some nations are greedy and want to possess others land, wealth, and resources. Some others are threatened by the reality of the other, and try to wipe them off the face of the earth. In this climate of hatred and insecurity, leaders and nations seem too eager to pick the way of conflict and war rather than peace and dialogue. Peace, some people think, will come only through war because of certain dark and evil forces in the world today that militate totally against decency and humanity. Glory to God in the highest and peace to His people! Glory to God through peace to His people! Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. Let each one of us become aware of the need to experience peace within ourselves and to become agents and carriers of peace to others. In our relationships in family and at work places, let us sow peace and not conflict. We shall strive to resolve conflict by facing the truth and sharing forgiveness. When leaders of the nations choose war as a means of resolving conflict, we have to exercise our Christian prophetic role by speaking our truth clearly and firmly. Peace is the Christmas gift; peace is the Easter gift. Let peace reign supreme in our hearts and among peoples and nations. Action: Before you begin the day, sit quietly for a couple minutes and become aware of the truth that God is calling you to share peace to all those who will come into your life that particular day. As you go through the day, in your thoughts, words, and deeds, let peace flow and dance. At the end of the day, when you are in bed, take a couple minutes to evaluate your day on the basis of the quality and degree of peace you could share with others. 6 Vocation Discernment Retreat Weekend St. Patrick s Seminary, Menlo Park, has announced the dates for its annual Discernment Retreat Weekend, January 15-17, Single men aged 21 years and older (exceptions can be made for men between 18 and 21) are invited to spend time during the retreat asking the Lord if he is choosing them for the sacred call to the priesthood. The retreat occurs from noon on Friday, January 15 to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, at St. Patrick s Seminary and University, 320 Middlefield Road, Menlo Park. Those interested in registering for the discernment retreat weekend are invited to call St. Veronica s Pastoral Center for further information or visit Reflecting on the Word The Epiphany of the Lord The magi must have paid close attention to see a new star. Nowadays, city lights blind us to the lights of heaven. When you were young, did you ever sit outside and point out shooting stars, falling stars, or lights that seemed brighter or new? You probably didn t go off to follow new stars like the magi, but the experience may have taught you to pay attention to God s glory surrounding you, and then, like the magi, act upon that discovery. Their message troubled Herod. He did not want competition, so he sought to destroy, rather than honor, the child. The magi paid attention to God s message in a dream and did not return to Herod. They were changed by their encounter with Jesus and departed another way. When we pay attention to the Lord, we are often not the same. We are transformed and live another way. We use our gifts to pay homage to God. Epiphany celebrates God s utter inclusivity. God is Lord of the chosen people and all people, Jew and Gentile. All the people of God become a light for others to see, know, and adore. God s promise to rescue the poor, help the afflicted, govern with justice, and have compassion for everyone is made flesh in Jesus and in us. At baptism we promised to keep the light of Christ burning brightly. We promised to pay attention to Christ wherever his light shines. Live Jesus in your flesh, through your eyes, mouth, hands, feet, and the hair on your head, as St. Francis de Sales commands. Pay attention to everyone, even those you might think unworthy. Shine brightly with the light that has come. Be not afraid. Be affirmed. For prayerful reflection and discussion: Who has surprised you by living the way of Jesus clearly? How? 8 REPAIR MY CHURCH St. Veronica Church Building Renovation Project (RMC Project) Francis heard the invitation of Jesus: Francis, go repair my Church. Yes! said Francis. This is what I long for with all my heart. The Need for the RMC Project: Now that the 3-year Capital Campaign project has concluded, the parish grounds are safer and more beautiful than ever! But walk in the Church, and the reason for our next fundraising effort should be evident. The finish on the pews is worn and some pews are cracked, kneelers are in need of repair, the carpet is definitely showing its age, the interior has not been painted in more than 20 years... and the list goes on! Now that the grounds have been spruced up, it s time to take care of our house of worship. The Scope of the RMC Project: The RMC Committee has estimated the cost of the Repair My Church project to be $250,000.
