4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Ordinary Time of the Liturgical Year: As you know, the Christmas season was over on January 10 th when we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord. January 11 th, the Ordinary Time started. This means there are no significant liturgical celebrations during this time, except of course the Sunday liturgies. Though we call this ordinary time, we know that God s love and grace are not to be trifled as ordinary. They are indeed extraordinary. They accompany us all through our lives and shine through all our days, no matter what the liturgical seasons are. Someone has said: Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale. Someone else has said: I refuse to be ordinary. Also we hear that great people are just ordinary people but with great desire. These things may well apply to the ordinary time of the liturgical year. God can touch us anytime. He always delights in us. He is waiting for us to love and give of ourselves. So let the ordinary time be an extraordinary time because of that little extra we can add to the ordinary time and to our ordinary lives and the ordinary routines. Lent is on the Horizon---Plan Ahead?: The short Ordinary Time comes to an end as we begin Lent on Ash Wednesday on February 10 th. As we will embrace Lent in the next two and a half weeks, we could start planning on what we might do differently in Lent. One of the things I would suggest is to go to daily Mass during Lent. This might be easier for retired people. Going to daily Mass in Lent would deepen our love for the Eucharist and the community we belong to. The Word of God at Mass would be all about conversion and fullness of life. It would also be a daily reminder that we are in fact in Lent, a special time of God s presence and grace. No doubt it would involve giving up certain things and even going through inconvenience and sacrifice --- all part of the spirit of Lent. It would be a good idea to start planning already now on what we might do extra or different in Lent. St. Veronica Parish Center Loan Information: As of December 31, 2015, the balance owing on our loan to the Archdiocese is $224, The parish has been doing a monthly payment of $4,200. The annual payment of principal and interest is $50,400. Loan documents were signed in June First payment was on January 1, The starting loan balance was $600,159. The last payment is due December 1, (Source: Ron Derenzi, Finance Committee Chair). Inspiration from Academia about Trust and Respect: People size you up in seconds but what exactly are they evaluating? Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy has been studying first impressions alongside fellow psychologists Susan Fiske and Peter Glick for more than 15 years, and has discovered patterns in these interactions. In her new book, Presence, Cuddy says people quickly answer two questions when they first meet you: Can I trust this person? Can I respect this person? Psychologists refer to these dimensions as warmth and competence respectively, and ideally you want to be perceived as having both. Interestingly, Cuddy says that most people, especially in a professional context, believe that competence is the more important factor. After all, they want to prove that they are smart and talented enough to handle your business. But in fact warmth, or trustworthiness, is the most important factor in how people evaluate you. From an evolutionary perspective, Cuddy says, it is more crucial to our survival to know whether a person deserves our trust. It makes sense when you consider that in cavemen days it was more important to figure out if your fellow man was going to kill you and steal all your possessions than if he was competent enough to build a good fire. While competence is highly valued, Cuddy says it is evaluated only after trust is established. And focusing too much on displaying your strength can backfire. If someone you're trying to influence doesn t trust you, you re not going to get very far; in fact, you might even elicit suspicion because you come across as manipulative, Cuddy says. A warm, trustworthy person who is also strong elicits admiration, but only after you ve established trust does your strength become a gift rather than a threat. (Source: Yahoo News) Quotable God Quotes: Every time I count my blessings, my love for God grows bigger. Every time I count my struggles, my faith in God grows stronger. God has no phone but I talk to him. He has no Facebook, but he is still my friend. He does not have Twitter, but I still follow him. God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say Thank You? Don t tell God you have a big problem, tell your problem you have a big God. Humor: A Weekly Reminder: Without God, our week would be: Sinday, Mournday, Tearsday, Wasteday, Thirstday, Fightday & Shatterday. Remember seven days without God makes one weak!! Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Reflecting on the Word Third Sunday in Ordinary Time An ancient saying - Lex orandi, lex credendi - states that we pray what we believe. Our prayer and belief affect how we live. Celebrating liturgy forms us as Catholic Christians. Its ritual actions, songs, scriptures, and prayers, along with how we use our bodies, all make a difference and prepare us to announce the Gospel with our lives. The first reading today describes a liturgy. The Israelites, returned from exile, relearn how to honor, hear, reverence, and live God s law. They weep, overcome with emotion at being able to gather again and celebrate this ritual. They eat and drink to celebrate their return to temple, land, and religious practice. Maybe you have had a similar experience after being away from celebrating the Eucharist for a while. Liturgy is also the setting for today s Gospel. Jesus reads from Isaiah and invites us to identify his life and ministry as the time when God s promised favor, freedom, justice, and mercy are fulfilled. Because the people thought they knew Jesus well, they find his identifying himself with these words difficult. Adding Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing adds fuels to the fire. We gather as the Body of Christ to celebrate the liturgy. We have a personal relationship with God s saving love because we belong to Christ s Body. Our unique gifts help the entire Body live what we celebrate. We can live or ignore what we pray. When we live it, do people meet us and say, Today the scriptures are fulfilled by your living? We pray what we believe to know how to live. Being filled with the Spirit can free captives, announce good news, open eyes, and anoint the world with the presence of Christ. For prayerful consideration and discussion What parts of the liturgy bring you to tears or invite overwhelming rejoicing? Why? Does celebrating Mass make a difference in how I live? How? - from Living the Word Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at Baptisms are generally celebrated monthly on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English and on various 2nd Saturdays in Spanish. 8 REPAIR MY CHURCH St. Veronica Church Building Renovation Project (RMC Project) The Need for the RMC Project: Now that the 3-year Capital Campaign project has concluded, the parish grounds are safer and more beautiful than ever! But walk in the Church, and the reason for our next fundraising effort should be evident. The finish on the pews is worn and some pews are cracked, kneelers are in need of repair, the carpet is definitely showing its age, the interior has not been painted in more than 20 years... and the list goes on! Now that the grounds have been spruced up, it s time to take care of our house of worship. The Scope of the RMC Project: The RMC Committee has estimated the cost of the Repair My Church project to be $250,000. Here is the breakdown: Interior Painting of the Church $ 30,000 New Carpet/Flooring $ 30,000 Refurbishing the Pews with new kneelers $100,000 Interior Doors, Windows, Hardware, Locks $ 50,000 Vestibule Restroom Renovation $ 5,000 Lighting Upgrade, Fixtures, & Electrical Work $ 10,000 Sound System Upgrade $ 5,000 Church Security System with Cameras $ 15,000 Vestibule Spruce-up & Bulletin Boards $ 5,000 Total: $250,000 The Timeline of the RMC Project: The goal is to complete the Big Three projects - paint, carpet and pews totaling $160,000 - in summer 2016 if the money is raised. Since these projects would necessitate moving Masses to the Parish Center for a number of weeks, summer is the ideal time to complete these items. Then other projects could be completed in due time. Please help make our Church the beautiful worship space we all deserve! Detach and return the bottom portion with your donation I would like to donate the following amount to the St. Veronica Repair My Church Project: $50 $100 $250 $500 $1,000 $2,500 $5,000 Other Amount Name: Address: Address: Phone number: Envelope Number (if applicable):
