Peter: the impetuous one who acts first & reflects later, caught up as he is in his love for Jesus. Paul: the cerebral one who asks us to think through the implications of the love we have experienced in Christ. They represent not simply two different types of Christians, but two aspects of every Christian s life. The story of Peter at Caesarea Philippi shows him confessing faith in Jesus as Messiah, even though he does not yet fully grasp what this means. He simply knows that, in his first -century Jewish context, this was the most exalted title he can give to Jesus. He does not grasp that this will mean that Jesus must suffer & die & be raised again, but time & trials will teach Peter the full meaning of the faith that he has so boldly confessed, the faith upon which the Church will be built. While the Gospel reading presents Peter at the beginning of his life as a follower of Jesus, our second reading presents Paul near the end of his life. He reflects on how his life has been poured out for the sake of the gospel, & how God has stood by him & given him strength. Unlike Peter s impetuous profession of faith, Paul s is one that arises from considered reflection on the path on which God has led him throughout his life. But the faith he expresses is the same as that of Peter: Jesus is the fulfillment of human longing, the anointed one who will lead us into God s kingdom. - Living the Word

4 From the Pastor s Desk Reflections on My Calling as Pastor of St. Veronica Parish Dear Parishioners, My Reassignment to another Term: The last day of this month of June, I ll be completing six years at St. Veronica Parish. You may have seen both in our bulletin a couple of weeks ago and in Catholic San Francisco that I have been given by the Archbishop a second term of six years as pastor at St. Veronica. This is an opportunity for me to continue to serve God and our parish community. I thank you for your friendship and collaboration the last six years. I count on your continued prayers and support for me. May the good Lord bless us all and make our parish the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Being pastor is a calling. My role is one of servant-leadership to serve the local Church, which is St. Veronica Parish. My first and foremost responsibility as pastor is to preach the Word of God and preside over the Eucharist, which are at the heart of what we do in parish life, day after day, week after week. The pastoral responsibility is to be, therefore, the spiritual leader. The other important responsibility is to be the community builder, which means that I need to serve as a point of unity for various people, organizations, ministries, diverse practices of Catholicism, etc. within our parish. In the process, we have to provide for the basic needs and necessities of our parish, school, and faith formation programs. It is in that regard that we are currently engaged in the project of repaving our property. Further projects, such as changing the church carpet, painting the church interior, starting a pre-school, etc. will have to be addressed when our pavement work phase III is completed in a year or so from now. Being pastor, as you know, is complex because any leadership role is a challenge, especially one that combines spiritual and administrative roles. Decisions have to be made and in the process not everyone will be happy. At times, there would be people wanting opposite things. If I satisfy one set of people, I would be making another set of people unhappy. However, through consultations, prayer, and discernment, I have to make the decisions, keeping in mind the larger good of our parish and the teachings of the Church and the gospel. Sometimes, hard decisions have to be made in order to ensure and protect the Catholic way of doing things in a parish or school. Through all this process of decision-making, growth, and even an occasional controversy, I m delighted at the way our parish is flourishing. I have no doubt that we are headed in the right direction, a direction that affirms faith, family, and friendships. My Silver Jubilee of Ordination: My reappointment to a second term coincides this summer with a milestone in my priesthood. This August 19 th, I ll be completing 25 years as priest, 13 of which were spent as a Jesuit priest and 12 as a diocesan priest. Altogether, I have been serving God in the Church for 41 years. A long time indeed! I can t believe how the years have gone by! Priesthood has been a gift, a joy, and a blessing for me. My mother before she passed away would always brag that she gave her best child to God. I find it difficult to believe it because when I look at my siblings, all of whom live in the U.S. and Canada, I see them as wonderful human beings--- hardworking, sincere, very Catholic, loving, generous, compassionate, and talented. I always wonder if I will ever be as good a human being as my siblings are. I am convinced though that with my strengths and flaws, my striving for holiness and sinfulness, God s grace shines through my life and strengthens me to do what God wants me to do. As he said to Paul, he says to me: My grace will be sufficient for you. My happiness will truly lie in fulfilling God s plan for me. Pursuing God s will for me with humility, faith, and joy, I will manage to stay on the right track. Your prayers, affection, support, and appreciation are essential for me to continue to carry out God s mission. God and us together, we shall do anything, even impossible things. As Abraham Lincoln prayed before a crucial battle in the Civil War, With God on our side, we cannot fail. Without Him, we cannot succeed. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

5 This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of two of the Catholic Church s greatest Saints, Peter & Paul Saint Peter the Apostle was from a town called Bethsaida near the Sea of Galilee. He and his brother Andrew were fishermen when they met Jesus. One day, Jesus told them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. The two brothers left their boat and their father to follow Jesus. Jesus said, You are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church. He then gave Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Peter was our first Pope. After Jesus ascended into heaven, Peter guided the Church as Jesus had told him. Peter went to Rome to bring the Gospel to the whole world and to build up the Church. He wrote two letters, known as Epistles. He is mentioned more than any other apostle in the Gospels, was with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and three times denied he knew Jesus at the time of his trial and crucifixion, for which he wept bitterly. Saint Peter was crucified by the Emperor Nero, upside down at Saint Peter s request because he did not feel he was worthy to be crucified in the same way Jesus was crucified. Saint Peter s Basilica in Vatican City stands on the place where Peter was buried. Because Jesus called on him to be a fisher of men, Saint Peter is the patron saint of fishermen. Saint Paul was born as Saul of Tarsus to Jewish parents. He did not believe in Jesus and persecuted the Christians. He held the robes of those who stoned Saint Stephen, the first martyr in the early days of the Church. One day, a brilliant light flashed around Saul. He fell to the ground and heard the voice of Jesus saying, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? Saul repented of his sins, was baptized, and changed his name to Paul. Saint Paul preached the Gospel everywhere he went. He suffered much for Christ. Saint Paul was put into prison in Rome, where he was beheaded as a martyr. Because of all the letters he wrote to the people - letters we still read today during Mass - Saint Paul is the patron saint of writers. (Information about Saints Peter and Paul is from the book, Lives of the Saints: An Illustrated History for Children by Aquinas Kids and Adult and Youth Faith Formation Registration Open The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program is now accepting registrations for the year. Those 18 years of age or older who would like to become Catholic (having never been baptized) or who would like to complete the Sacraments of Initiation (having been baptized into the Catholic faith, but not received Communion and/or been confirmed) are invited to call the Pastoral Center offices at and leave their contact information. A member of the RCIA team will follow up with details about the program, which begins in September. For school-aged youth starting with the first grade, the St. Veronica Faith Formation program offers nine years of religious instruction encompassing the teachings and traditions of the Catholic faith, including preparation for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Registration forms for may be found on the parish website, under the Faith Formation tab, or may be requested by calling the Faith Formation office at ext Please complete your registration process as soon as possible as class sizes are limited. Classes will begin in September, but the summer is needed to order books and supplies and set up the classes. Just a reminder that preparation for First Holy Communion and Confirmation are each two-year programs, beginning no earlier than 1st grade for Communion and no earlier than 8th grade for Confirmation. Robert Barron will continue with Episode 3 entitled The Ineffable Mystery of God: That Than Which Nothing Great can be Thought which takes us on a journey from the heights of Mount Sinai to the mysterious sites of Istanbul, from the glittering streets of Parish to the glorious Sistine Chapel.
