This week s scriptures continue to explore the gift of the Holy Spirit, but this time they focus on how the gift of the Holy Spirit binds the church to God in a holy communion of love. In John s Gospel we hear of the closeness of the Father and the Son. Jesus says, Everything the Father has is mine and that the Spirit will pass on what Jesus has to us. The Letter to the Romans helps us realize what it is that we have received: The holy love that is shared between Father and Son has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us (Romans 5:5). Not only does our God delight in the human race (Proverbs 8:31), care for us, and crown us with glory and honor (Psalm 8:6); through the gift of the Spirit God binds us in a holy communion to the eternal love of the Trinity. 4 Dear Parishioners, From the Pastor s Desk The Holy Trinity: This Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, a feast of beauty, mystery, love, community, sharing, harmony. This feast is connected with who we are as human beings. It s related to our highest ideals and aspirations. Hans Urs von Balthasar, a famous 20 th century Swiss theologian says: In Christ, for the first time, we see that in God himself there exists-- within his inseparable unity--the distinction between the Father who gives and the Gift which is given (the Son), but only in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Unity and diversity within Trinity is something we can relate to. Take South San Francisco! Look at all the diversity among people. It s the same in San Francisco or California or the United States or the whole wide world! Even though we are diverse in our backgrounds, cultures, worldviews, and beliefs, we are all united as human beings and as children of the same God who loves the world with a passionate and everlasting life. Isn t it wonderful that we find God himself in perfect unity though diverse in his three persons? Our human society in fact reflects the unity and diversity of the Trinitarian God. Or it should constantly strive to reflect the One-God-in-Three Persons! If the human family could build up community in perfect harmony and unity while celebrating the diversity according to the example of the three-persons-one-god in the Trinitarian mystery, that s when we as human beings can truly fulfill our destiny. All the violence and war, poverty and hunger, inhumanity and injustice militate against the Holy Trinity. All that the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit ask us to do is to bury the hatchet and build up the human family. RIP Father Richard G. Kalkman: Father passed away on May 18 th in San Bruno. He was 83. I visited him on May 16 th at the Care Home and gave him the anointing and Communion. Father was at a critical stage at that time, but he responded well to the conversation and the sacraments. Father Kalkman served St. Veronica parish for several years by celebrating weekend Masses. His Memorial Mass took place at our Church on Friday, May 24 th. May Father Kalkman rest in peace! Next Sunday: Corpus Christi - the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Another beautiful feast that inspires us to give of ourselves to others as Jesus makes a gift of his own self. How can we become eucharist to others as Jesus is our Eucharist is something we may want to ponder. More about it next Sunday. Spanish Ministry Dinner Dance: On Saturday June 22 nd, the Spanish Ministry in our parish will hold a dinner dance to raise money for the Capital Campaign. This is a sign of how the Spanish ministries in our parish are flourishing and becoming an integral part of the parish life. They do their prayer service on Saturday evenings and Spanish Mass on the first and third Sunday evenings. Realizing the need of the Spanish-speaking parishioners, I m seriously thinking of having an evening Mass every Sunday. I m in consultations. The Filipino community in our parish has also approached me with the suggestion of doing a dinner dance with a two-fold purpose: to bring people together and to raise money for repaving our property. Let s extend the Spanish and Filipino groups all the support we can give. My Visit to Loyola Marymount University: It is that time of year when graduations are part of the fabric of life. Everywhere there s excitement of young people moving on to the next stage in their lives. My friends recently invited me to attend their son Michael s graduation at Loyola Marymount University in LA. Since I had never been to this Jesuit school, I jumped at the invitation. In fact, Michael s parents Bryan and Maureen met at LMU when they were students there, fell in love and married. Michael s grandmother Margaret is my friend from Holy Name parish in the Sunset. The graduation ceremony was held outdoors in which over 1300 students received their diplomas. The previous evening, I attended the Baccalaureate Mass in their sports arena. The music was delightful and the spirit uplifting. When I saw all these graduates full of hope and promise, I thought to myself how much the world is in need of these young people. They can make a better world through their sheer depth of humanity and enterprise. They can solve all sorts of problems plaguing the world. They can bring joy and peace, hope and optimism, to the world. The sky is the limit. After the graduation ceremony, I stayed with Michael s family in Hermosa Beach, a picturesque town close to LAX. The house was right by the beach with a strand running through the town to other beach towns like Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. I got on a bicycle (a cruiser ) and explored the beautiful towns by the beach. It was an exhilarating experience. Joke: A religion school teacher asker her little children, as they were on the way to church service, And why is it necessary to be quiet in church? One little girl replied, Because people are sleeping. Food for Thought: Husband: I m going to work hard, and some day we are going to be rich. Wife: We are rich already, dear, for we have each other. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Melissa Chircop (HM) HOLY CROSS CEMETERY JOINS NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE TO HEROES The national program Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes will honor those men and women who died while serving in the armed forces, as well as recognizing both active military and veteran military. On Monday, May 27th at 11 am Rev Msgr. James Tarantino, will celebrate Mass at Holy Cross Mausoleum for all the faithfully departed. The local celebration will also include the presentation of the colors by members of the Cesar E. Chavez American Legion Post 505 and the opportunity for cemetery visitors to remember loved ones by writing messages on tribute cards.
