When Elisha asks the prophet s permission to kiss his parents good-bye, Elijah answers somewhat ambiguously, but Elisha realizes this is the hour of decision. He not only kills and cooks his oxen but burns the plow they came with, wiping out all connection to his past trade. There is no report on how his parents felt about this, but it signals Elisha s commitment. Eventually, it won him double portion of Elijah s spirit. Jesus outlines the fitness program his disciples must measure up to: ability to live without the comforts of home, freedom from any ties to family that might prevent preaching the kingdom of God, and the ability to live such a life with total commitment and without any regret. This is the work of the Spirit within us, liberating us from what can hold us in place, unable to help bring God s kingdom into the world. When Paul talks about Christ setting us free for freedom, he too refers to casting off any yoke that could bind or enslave us. Like Jesus, Paul voices a call to live by the Spirit. The Spirit can free us from any inclination either to bite and devour another, as in calling down fire from heaven on them, or to be consumed by others who wish us harm. By surrendering to the Spirit, we will become fit. - from Living the Word

4 Dear Parishioners, Spanish Dinner-Dance: On Saturday June 22 nd, the Spanish ministry of St. Veronica held this event to raise money for our pavement project of Capital Campaign. The net profit from this event is: $ Victor and Conchita Blanco and their team did a wonderful work of eliciting donors so that everything they did that evening was donated. That was indeed a brilliant idea they put into practice so well. I would like to thank and appreciate them for their successful event. This is obviously an inspiration for many other groups to host dinners and other fun events to raise money for our Capital Campaign project. My thanks are also due to Jennifer Baylor in the office who worked well with the Spanish group to ensure its success. I thank the parishioners who participated in this event, knowing it s a way of supporting the Capital Campaign. Kudos to all those who organized this enjoyable and successful event! Capital Campaign: As usual, I want to keep you posted on the developments. The tree didn t come down on Saturday June 22nd! About 15 minutes before the company (Davey Tree) was to show up for taking down this tree, they sent a message saying that the crane was out of order. A pin inside the crane, they said, had cracked into pieces. Until the crane is ready, this tree work will be pending. For more news, stay tuned! Welcome, Father Rafael de Avila: With the help of Nita Ricotta, I m setting up the room of our new Parochial Vicar, Father Rafael. I would like him to have a clean and comfortable room in the rectory. He was supposed to join the 9:30 a.m. Mass last Sunday, but at the last minute, his replacement priest couldn t help. However, toward the end of hospitality, Father Rafael did arrive (after completing his Mass at St. Bruno Church) and met about 25 of our parishioners who were still there at that time in the Parish Center. He has been moving his belongings to his room in our rectory, and by the first of July, he will officially begin to ease into his ministry here. Again, welcome, Father Rafael! We are delighted to have you with us. As you become part of this community, you ll enjoy the blessings of this parish. Book Club: On Monday June 24 th, the Book Club met to talk about the book we had just read: What You Should Know About Church History by Charlene Altemose. Price of the book: $4.95. It is a little From the Pastor s Desk book. You couldn t find a simpler or easier book on Church history. The book is divided into four chapters, each dealing with 500 years of Church history. You can finish reading this book in three or four sittings of an hour and a half each. I recommend this book to you. It will give you a sense of history of the Church we love and cherish, and an insight into the Church as it strives to be the Sacrament of Christ to the world of today. Our next book is Conclave by Greg Tobin. It s an interesting yarn about a conclave, mixing fiction with some realistic details about the Vatican. You ll really like it, I think. In light of the recent conclave, this book might grab you. Word of God: Inner freedom is not easy to come by. We may have economic, social, political freedoms, but the freedom of the mind and heart is far more difficult to acquire. Paul exhorts: For freedom Christ set us free. Isn t it true that we go about making choices on the basis of our likes, dislikes, passions, pulls and pushes, inclinations, desires, wants, etc. rather than by what God wants us to choose in our present circumstances? New Hampshire s official motto (from General John Stark s message) Live Free or Die might hold a spiritual meaning for us. If we do not act out of inner freedom, we may actually be spiritually not alive! Jesus insights on discipleship in the gospel invite us to that inner freedom. If we cling to things and relationships in such a way that Jesus is not central to our identity, then we still do not have that spiritual freedom. Let our longing be: Lord, give me the interior freedom to choose wisely so that I can always strive to give you greater glory. Catholic Jokes: Each year at the beginning of Faith Formation classes, a veteran teacher sends this note to all parents: If you promise not to believe everything your child says happens at class, I ll promise not to believe everything he or she says happens at home. A little girl became restless as the priest s sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go? Our parish St. Vincent de Paul pantry is running low on many non-perishable food items. Volunteers to help deliver food are always welcome to join the SVdP team; training is provided. Donations may be dropped off at the Pastoral Center from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Thank you in advance for your generosity. The need for assistance within our parish boundaries continues to grow. Please note that there are two years of sacramental preparation for First Communion and Confirmation. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is offered for adults 18 years and older who wish to become Catholic, or baptized Catholics who wish to complete their sacraments of initiation (Communion and/or Confirmation).
