However, only the very shrewd discover it and sacrifice everything in order to possess it. The parable of the net is quite different. Like the parable of the wheat and the weeds (see Matthew 13:40b-42, Sixteenth Sunday), it describes a community consisting of both good and bad. Only at the end of the catch will the fish be separated. Jesus asks if the disciples understand his teaching, because they must see that, like the old and new treasures of the householder, the teaching of Jesus, though radically different, is grounded in the original tradition. The heart can spend many years and look in many places for happiness. We can bypass the kingdom again and again, going off into various dead ends, cul de sacs, and blind alleys. Paul reminds the Romans that all things work for good for those who look to God. God, who has predestined us to share the image of the Son, wishes to give us the wisdom needed to discover where the kingdom is hidden. Living the Word Rectory churchoffice@stveronicassf.com

4 From the Pastor's Desk Treasure-Hunting Dear Friends, I want to join you as we together explore the beauty and insight of the Word of God this Sunday as it touches us deeply and wakes us up from slumber into consciousness. For most of us, it often takes a long time in life to come to know what is important and what is not. We waste a lot of time and come to a lot of grief because of this. It takes decades for us to distinguish between what matters and what does not. Sometimes, through a whole life time, we may wander about without knowing the difference between what is real and what is not. We can get taken up with flashy unreal things and let go of the real ones. We can also look at these in terms of what is temporary and what is permanent; what is temporal and what is eternal; what is passing and what is lasting. In the Word of God today, there is a challenge thrown at us to look at ourselves a bit more deeply and see if we are in the habit of choosing what matters. God promises King Solomon to grant him anything he wishes. The wise man who could have asked for more kingdoms, more money, more palaces, more pleasures, and more treasures, chooses to ask for an understanding heart and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. Wow! That s really something! God is mightily pleased. He promises to give Solomon a heart so wise and understanding that there will be no one equal to him. Think about it for a minute: a heart that understands! The heart is usually associated with feeling. How can a heart think and understand and be wise? That is the combination that God wants us to have. If we can grow into that combination, with God s grace, then we can say we are truly getting ahead in life. We cannot just be rational beings. We cannot just be given to feelings. We need to be able to combine both. To think rightly and to feel deeply does not come easy. To be able to have a heart that is capable of love and right judgment! This is what the French mathematician-philosopher Blaise Pascal meant when he said: The heart has its reasons which the reason does not understand! That s a precious treasure! The Gospel reading reinforces the need for that treasure by giving us another parable of the Kingdom of God. God s Kingdom will be like that pearl of great price that the merchant discovers and gives up everything else to possess it. Solomon knew what his treasure was in life. The merchant in the parable acted decisively to possess that treasure by giving up things he needed to get rid of. What is our great treasure? Is it possible that we are bound in shallows and in miseries because we are clueless about what our treasure is? Possessing this treasure would mean giving up a whole lot of things that don t matter in life. What are these things that come in the way of our possessing the pearl? What is that precious, priceless pearl in our life? Let s go treasure-hunting! Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
5 Announcements CONGRATULATIONS FATHER CHARLES It is a pleasure to announce our Pastor has been appointed by Most Reverend George Niederauer, Archbishop of San Francisco, to serve as Dean for Deanery 9 effective July 1, This appointment covers a two-year term. In addition to this recent appointment, Father Charles was also asked to serve on the Stewardship Council of the Archdiocese and Clergy Ongoing Formation Board by our Archbishop last year. We are grateful to have Father Charles' talents not only serve this community but beyond our Parish. Congratulations! We offer our Sincerest Congratulations and Warmest Blessings to: Michael Hack & Caryn Pizzo who celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony July 16, 2011 St. Veronica Church Let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.: - John 3:18 Guidelines for Scheduling Weddings at St. Veronica Church The policy of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco states that arrangements for marriage are to be made at least six (6) months in advance. These months are meant to offer couples the opportunity for prayerful reflection on Christian marriage and for consideration of their future life as "two who will be made one." To assist you in this process, Marriage Preparation Programs for all engaged couples are offered through the Archdiocese. Information can be secured from the Parish Office. Please follow these steps: 1) Contact the Parish Office to schedule an appointment with a priest for your initial meeting. 2) During your meeting you will fill out a questionnaire, a date for your marriage can be set and details of the process will be explained. 3) Make sure to contact our Music Director and Wedding Coordinator in a timely fashion as well so no details are missed for this very important day. Preparing for the New Missal Translation LISTENING TO GOD'S WORD Entering into the Liturgy of the Word, we might think that the main action taking place is the lector standing at the ambo reading from Sacred Scripture. In one sense, this is correct. We would be hard-pressed to overstate the importance and power of the Word of God proclaimed at each liturgy. Jesus Christ himself is present to us in this living Word. We shall always remember that our life, faith and worship are possible only with God's initiative. However, consider the work for which we are responsible -- to listen before any of us can become doers, proclaimers or preachers of God's Word, we must first be hearers of the Word. In the Liturgy of the Word, listening is our first right and duty. To listen well takes focus and intention. Just as the lector must have the intention of proclaiming the reading clearly, audibly and intelligently, so each of us must have the intention of listening to God's message as if our lives and the life of the Church depends upon it, for indeed they do. In the busy-ness of life, where many of us feel overwhelmed with advertisements, s and text messages, let us carefully, deliberately, hungrily attend to the Word of God, for here are the words of eternal life. Question of the Week: Can I identify at least one thing I have gained from listening to God's Word this week? Over the past few weeks we have provided you with articles focusing on the Roman Missal Introductory Rites. This week we now turn our focus on the Liturgy of the Word. Our hope is that these informative articles offer you a better understanding of the Celebration of the Mass and the significance of its various parts in order to deepen your experience as we celebrate as a community.
6 Family Connection Like the person who found the buried treasure and the merchant who acquired the pearl of great price, we seek to find the signs of the kingdom of heaven in our lives. In fact, we even work to bring about God's kingdom in our actions and in our words. We pray that our family values reflect our pursuit of the kingdom of heaven. As Jesus' disciples, we place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. Solution Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (often abbreviated RCIA) is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. Do you or know someone who longs to have a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father? Did you know that many who have considered becoming Catholic say that no one ever asked them to become a member of our church. Ask about the RCIA sessions for those who are not baptized, are of other faiths, or are curious about exploring the Catholic faith. Call the rectory office at for more detailed information. Faith Formation Registration Open It's time to register for Faith Formation. Forms can be found on the parish web site under the Faith Formation link.
