They come and they go. One day we simply stop climbing up on our mother s or father s lap. Or we quit reading comic books, or put away our Barbies, or we begin to notice beauty. It happens more than once in a lifetime. We pass the exam and get our driver s license, and in a moment all of childhood s boundaries crumble. We graduate from school and our days become our own, sometimes frighteningly so. We move away from home and realize we can no longer return, not to the way it once was. And while we think all those moments are of our own doing, in truth they are not, none of them. They come upon us as does November out of autumn, and frequently just as bleak. The temples of our lives that we ve adorned not only with precious stones but also with precious memories and treasured ways, are always being torn down without one stone left upon another. And no one ever asks our permission. Jesus vision can become the one still point in our ever-changing world, or the one source of life and love when all else is collapsing. Rev. Joseph J. 4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, The Titanic hit an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15th, 1912, causing the death of more than 1500 people. Citing the tragedy 80 years later, a magazine posed this question: If you d been on the Titanic when it was sinking, would you have rearranged the deck chairs? The provocative question can make us think discerningly of life s choices. We may be overwhelmed by challenges. The responsibilities may fatigue or frighten us. Disasters may threaten to derail our plans. Or things may simply be drifting in the wrong direction. Some decisions may bring us sleepless nights. Or unexpected illness or accident or failure or rejection may have caused us deep anguish. Despite our sincerity, we may have been misunderstood. Or we may have a sense of being adrift without energy or hope. In these and similar situations, is it possible that we are rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship, instead of perhaps heeding the cries of those in need, helping people into their lifeboats, and comforting others through crises? The readings grapple with eschatology, the end things, namely death, judgment, heaven, and hell. The end of the liturgical year is a metaphoric eschatological reality. In apocalyptic language, we are told of the upcoming cataclysmic events. In November, as we turn our attention to death and pray for the dear departed souls, we realize that eschatology is not some abstract theory or a sci-fi movie, but something that touches our lives intimately. Death of the dear ones speaks to our own mortality, anchoring us in life in view of the end of the journey. In a sense, eschatology is part of our daily lives. The French existentialist Albert Camus says: I shall tell you a great secret, my friend. Do not wait for the last judgment. It takes place everyday. Often times, it is the small things that can accumulate to create a crisis. The Vic- torian writer Thomas Carlyle writes: Civilizations decline, not necessarily through some colossal criminality, but from multitudinous cases of petty betrayal and individual neglect. The daily grind of our lives has significance in the ultimate sense. God upholds and graces us. In Malachi, we are assured that despite the day of the Lord blazing out the evildoers, the sun of justice will heal those who walk in God s ways. Jesus s apocalyptic language needs to be read in the context of the terrible destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. wreaked by the Romans, an event the readers of Luke were familiar with. Some people were trying to rearrange the deck chairs in that they were distracted by how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings. But Jesus speaks of the crisis in both the historical and eschatological sense. All sorts of calamitous things will happen, but those faithful to God need not be worried: Not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives. As we view the end of the world, the end of our lives, and the many personal and global crises, let us, first, spend our talents and energy on things that will enhance and deepen the quality of life for us and everyone else, keeping in mind the present responsibilities and the ultimate fulfillment. Secondly, as we go through all sorts of challenges in life, the most comforting conviction is that God guides our destiny and aids us to be rooted in goodness and love. When we can see life in this wholesome way, the contemporary and eschatology will inform each other, giving meaning for our lives here and now and in the ultimate sense.
