4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Pope Francis Apostolic Visit to America: St. Veronica Parish welcomes the Pope to America with great joy and gratitude. As the Holy Father is on our soil Sept. 22 nd through 27 th, let us be with him in spirit and make the pilgrimage along with him, as we cherish him in our hearts and prayers. Also, let s open our minds and hearts to his heartfelt and transformative message. Sports Mass: Last Sunday, we celebrated the Sports Mass at 10:00 a.m. It was to invoke God s blessings on the Fall Sports Season of volleyball for the girls and baseball for the boys. The church was packed with the athletes, sports officers, parents and parishioners. It s always a joy for a pastor to see the church packed and overflowing. That s the way it should be each Sunday. The athletes read the readings and prayers, brought up the gifts, took up the collection, gave out the bulletins. In my homily, I told them that they could keep three things in mind: 1. Sports activities help them develop their body, mind, heart, and spirit. Their bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, as Paul puts it. 2. They are part of a team. They need to learn how to work with others and be a team person. Being part of others is the way to be human, in family and community. 3. They represent the spirit of St. Veronica School and Parish. As St. Veronica went out to help Jesus in his suffering and carried his image, the athletes are to be ready to help others in need and carry the image of Jesus in all they say and do, in and out of the sports events. They are to keep the flag of St. Veronica Parish flying high. Faith Formation First Sessions of the Year: Our Faith Formation classes have started. Preaching of the good news and sharing of our faith are what we do in this program. On Wednesday September 09 th in a session each in the afternoon and evening, I had the opportunity of speaking to the students and parents. On Saturday Sept. 12 th in the morning, I spoke to another batch of students and parents. This program is one of the most important things we do in our parish life. I invited them all to think about two important things: 1. Taking the time to explore a personal relationship with Jesus who is the reason we do everything in our Catholic faith. 2. Mass being a central and fundamental Catholic practice, taking the time to come together with the community for this celebration where we are forged into the body of Christ as we hear God s word and receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Out of 168 hours in a week, can t we spend one hour for Mass? I took the opportunity to thank and appreciate the good work being done by Karen Guglielmoni, Faith Formation Coordinator, and the catechists. Men s Club and Women s Guild Meetings: These school organizations have had their first meetings of the year, which I have had the pleasure to join. I said the prayer and gave the pastor s report in these meetings. There is a great spirit of community and friendships in these meetings. They are all eager to be of service to the school and parish. As I appreciated their many activities and their support for the mission of the parish and school, I also invited them to be more active in the liturgical celebrations by being lectors and Eucharistic ministers. I announced the completion of the repavement and beautification project of our property and thanked them for their support and collaboration. Pope Francis Quotes: 1. A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just. 2. Grace is not part of consciousness; it is the amount of light in our souls, not knowledge nor reason. 3. Human rights are not only violated by terrorism, repression or assassination, but also by unfair economic structures that create huge inequalities. 4. Life is a journey. When we stop, things don t go right. 5. Although the life of a person is in a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God. 6. Money has to serve, not to rule. 7. Hatred is not to be carried in the name of God! War is not to be waged in the name of God! 8. I see clearly that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful... I see the church as a field hospital after battle. 9. Perhaps you were mad, perhaps plates flew, but please remember this: never let the sun go down without making peace! Never, never, never! 10. Instead of being just a church that welcomes and receives by keeping the doors open, let us try also to be a church that finds new roads... to those who have quit or are indifferent. Joke: Heaven & Hell: A minister in Florida lamented that it was difficult to get his message across to his congregation: It s so beautiful here in the winter, he said, that heaven doesn t interest them. And it s so hot here in the summer that hell doesn t scare them. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Reflecting on the Word Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus prediction of his own death in today s Gospel reading can make it seem that this is an inevitable fate willed for him by God. And it is true that Jesus death is one that he freely accepts because he knows it to be part of God s plan for the world s redemption. But in another sense his death is not God s doing, but the doing of human beings: he is to be handed over to men and they will kill him (Mark 9:31). God does not will Jesus death, but his life of righteousness and love and dedication to the will of God. But God also wills that Jesus be put into the hands of human beings, and those human beings chose to kill him because of the kind of life he lived. But why would they do this? Why would we humans want to kill someone whose life was one of righteousness and love? The book of Wisdom gives us some insight into what motivates such actions. The just person is obnoxious to us; the very righteousness of such a person stands as a reproach to our failings. Moreover, we suspect that such righteousness and love is in fact a sham, and we hope that if we persecute the righteous person we can unmask him or her, showing that, under pressure, he or she is no different than we are. The Letter of James identifies such ways of thinking as arising from our passions, the negative emotions that arise from envy and lead ultimately to murder and war. Even the followers of Jesus are not immune to such passions, as we can see at the end of the Gospel reading, as the apostles are arguing over who is greatest. Jesus reminds them and us that the only remedy for such passions is to commit ourselves to being the servant of all. For prayerful consideration and discussion Does the goodness of another person ever make me feel bad about my own failings? How can I respond positively to such feelings? How do I respond when I feel that someone dislikes me without cause? Praying with the Word Lord God, teach us to serve and not be served, so that we might be faithful followers of Jesus. - from Living the Word Who was Junipero Serra? As any California 4th grader can tell you, Junipero Serra founded nine of the 21 missions that dot the state of California. Serra was born in Majorca, Spain, on November 24, 1713, a son of farmers, and educated by the Franciscans, eventually earning a doctorate in Theology in He chose the name Junipero in memory of the brother companion of St. Francis of Assisi. In January 1749, he was assigned as an Indian missionary in America and set sail in April of that year. In America, Serra learned the local language and used a visual method of teaching religion. From 1769 to 1782, Junipero Serra founded nine of the California missions from San Diego to Santa Barbara. He died at Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel on August 28, 1784, and is buried there. The cause for Serra s beatification began in the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno in 1934, but it was not until September 25, 1988, that then-pope John Paul II beatified Junipero Serra. Junipero Serra will be canonized by Pope Francis on September 23, in Washington, DC.
