4 Rejoice and Be Glad - Gaudete et Exsultate The Call to Holiness in Today s World On March 19, 2018, the feast of St. Joseph, Pope Francis signed the apostolic exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate. The pope reminds us, We need to recognize and combat our aggressive and selfish inclinations, and not let them take root (no. 114). The five chapters of Pope Francis exhortation will be presented in their entirety. We now continue with the section of Chapter 5 entitled Spiritual Combat, Vigilance, and Discernment, from the Nov. 25 bulletin. CHAPTER FIVE DISCERNMENT 166. How can we know if something comes from the Holy Spirit or if it stems from the spirit of the world or the spirit of the devil? The only way is through discernment, which calls for something more than intelligence or common sense. It is a gift which we must implore. If we ask with confidence that the Holy Spirit grant us this gift, and then seek to develop it through prayer, reflection, reading and good counsel, then surely we will grow in this spiritual endowment. An urgent need 167. The gift of discernment has become all the more necessary today, since contemporary life offers immense possibilities for action and distraction, and the world presents all of them as valid and good. All of us, but especially the young, are immersed in a culture of zapping. We can navigate simultaneously on two or more screens and interact at the same time with two or three virtual scenarios. Without the wisdom of discernment, we can easily become prey to every passing trend This is all the more important when some novelty presents itself in our lives. Then we have to decide whether it is new wine brought by God or an illusion created by the spirit of this world or the spirit of the devil. At other times, the opposite can happen, when the forces of evil induce us not to change, to leave things as they are, to opt for a rigid resistance to change. Yet that would be to block the working of the Spirit. We are free, with the freedom of Christ. Still, he asks us to examine what is within us our desires, anxieties, fears and questions and what takes place all around us the signs of the times and thus to recognize the paths that lead to complete freedom. Test everything; hold fast to what is good (1 Thess 5:21). Always in the light of the Lord 169. Discernment is necessary not only at extraordinary times, when we need to resolve grave problems and make crucial decisions. It is a means of spiritual combat for helping us to follow the Lord more faithfully. We need it at all times, to help us recognize God s timetable, lest we fail to heed the promptings of his grace and disregard his invitation to grow. Often discernment is exercised in small and apparently irrelevant things, since greatness of spirit is manifested in simple everyday realities. It involves striving untrammelled for all that is great, better and more beautiful, while at the same time being concerned for the little things, for each day s responsibilities and commitments. For this reason, I ask all Christians not to omit, in dialogue with the Lord, a sincere daily examination of conscience. Discernment also enables us to recognize the concrete means that the Lord provides in his mysterious and loving plan, to make us move beyond mere good intentions. A supernatural gift 170. Certainly, spiritual discernment does not exclude existential, psychological, sociological or moral insights drawn from the human sciences. At the same time, it transcends them. Nor are the Church s sound norms sufficient. We should always remember that discernment is a grace. Even though it includes reason and prudence, it goes beyond them, for it seeks a glimpse of that unique and mysterious plan that God has for each of us, which takes shape amid so many varied situations and limitations. It involves more than my temporal well-being, my satisfaction at having accomplished something useful, or even my desire for peace of mind. It has to do with the meaning of my life before the Father who knows and loves me, with the real purpose of my life, which nobody knows better than he. Ultimately, discernment leads to the wellspring of undying life: to know the Father, the only true God, and the one whom he has sent, Jesus Christ (cf. Jn 17:3). It requires no special abilities, nor is it only for the more intelligent or better educated. The Father readily reveals himself to the lowly (cf. Mt 11:25) The Lord speaks to us in a variety of ways, at work, through others and at every moment. Yet we simply cannot do without the silence of prolonged prayer, which enables us better to perceive God s language, to interpret the real meaning of the inspirations we believe we have received, to calm our anxieties and to see the whole of our existence afresh in his own light. In this way, we allow the birth of a new synthesis that springs from a life inspired by the Spirit. (We will conclude the exhortation in our next installment.)

5 Vatican announces plenary indulgence, papal blessing for Walk for Life West Coast The Vatican has granted a plenary indulgence and a papal blessing for those who participate in the Walk for Life West Coast, including those who are sick and infirm and praying along with the participants in the Jan. 26 rally and walk along Market Street. All present at the Walk for Life rally will receive a papal blessing, conveyed by San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, and with that a plenary indulgence, according to a letter from the Vatican. Those who participate in "sacred celebrations" associated with the Walk in the dioceses of the area will also receive the plenary indulgence. "The Apostolic Penitentiary... graciously grants to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone... the faculty to impart the Papal Blessing with the accompanying Plenary Indulgence on the 26 th day of January, 2019, the day of the annual event called Walk for Life West Coast, after the Divine Sacrifice has been offered at the Cathedral, to all Christ's faithful who are present, who are truly penitent and compelled by charity, and who participated in the same sacred rites," according to a Dec. 21 letter signed by Mauro Cardinal Piacenza, Major Penitentiary, of the Apostolic Penitentiary, and received this week in San Francisco. The Walk for Life, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, draws more than 50,000 people to San Francisco's Civic Center. The day officially begins with a Walk for Life Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral. The rally is at 12:30 p.m. and the walk along Market Street begins at 1:30 p.m. A plenary indulgence is the expiation of temporal punishment for sins already forgiven, and can be applied to souls in Purgatory, to oneself, or to another person still living. It is a free gift of God's mercy, and theologically demonstrates the Church as a communion of those living, as well as those in purgatory and the saints and angels in heaven. "We are delighted with this news--what a wonderful gift and opportunity for all Catholics!" said Eva Muntean, cofounder and chair of the Walk for Life West Coast. "The Walk for Life West Coast and its surrounding events are true corporal and spiritual acts of mercy to those who have been unjustly deprived of life and to those women who suffer so much from the pain of abortion." A plenary indulgence removes the temporal punishment of already forgiven sin. The Walk for Life plenary or complete indulgence is granted with the three usual conditions of sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intentions of the pope which should be completed within several days of the actual event of participation in Walk for Life. The Vatican granted the plenary indulgence at the request of Archbishop Cordileone. A similar indulgence was bestowed on the March for Life in Washington, D.C., this year. This is the first time a plenary indulgence is being granted to the Walk for Life West Coast participants. "We are inexpressibly grateful that the church has recognized this and we hope the news spreads far and wide," Muntean said, noting that a plenary indulgence for the Walk is an act of mercy for all participants in the Walk. The Mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption will be livestreamed at sfarch.org.

6 Reflecting on the Word Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Weddings of the famous have become known for their extravagance. Syndicated radio host Diane Rehm once recalled how she and her husband had gone to two weddings over a few months, each costing over twenty thousand dollars, and neither marriage lasted a year. It seems that as expenses have increased, longevity has decreased. Even so, our faith holds up one marriage whose extravagance is located in its fidelity: Christ s love for his bride, the church. One of the less remembered titles Jesus applies to himself in the Gospels is the bridegroom. When asked why his disciples do not fast, he replies that as long as the bridegroom is present, there is no fasting. It is a time for celebration. Jesus remains the bridegroom the Father sent to woo God s people. The generous and extravagant abundance of the bridegroom comes across in today s miracle at Cana. Even though he has said his hour - that is, the hour when he reveals the extravagant love of God - has not yet come, still Jesus yields to his mother s request to remedy the embarrassment of a wedding without wine. The moral: when the Bridegroom comes, there will be endless joy. Ordinary Time begins with this marvelous story, proclaiming that God s generosity cannot be overestimated. We see it in the gifts St. Paul mentions in his letter to the fractious Corinthians, gifts that continue to be given. Such abundance and variety of gifts reflect God s extravagant love for us. Such gifts are given for the good of all. Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at Baptisms are generally celebrated monthly on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English. Please call the Parish Office to sign up. Upcoming baptism dates are as follows: February 2 & 16 March 2 & 16 April 6 (one date only in April) Preparation classes for parents and godparents are held on the second Tuesday of the month. Classes are conducted in the Pastoral Center from 7:30-9:00 p.m. (Adults only please). Please call the Parish Office at for specific dates and to reserve your space for the Baptismal Preparation Classes. For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion What does the image of Jesus the Bridegroom say about your relationship with him? What gifts of a generous God do you see in your own life and in those around you? Living and Praying with the Word Lord Jesus, you remain the bridegroom come to reveal your Father s extravagant love. In union with many of the saints, we dare to call you the spouse of our souls. May we revel in your passionate love shown on the cross, and reveal that love to those most in need of it. - Living the Word
