4 A Spiritual Reflection for the New Year Dear Parishioners, Story: The clock master was about to fix the pendulum of a clock when, to his surprise, he heard the pendulum speak. Please, sir, leave me alone, the pendulum pleaded. It will be an act of kindness on your part. Think of the number of times I will have to tick day and night. So many times each minute, sixty minutes an hour, twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. For year upon year. Millions of ticks. I could never do it. But the clock master answered wisely, Don t think of the future. Just do one tick at a time and you will enjoy every tick for the rest of your life. And that is exactly what the pendulum decided to do. It is still ticking merrily away. (The Prayer of the Frog, Vol. II) Reflection: Poised on the threshold of another year, we are about to bring down the curtain on 2018 and ring in the New Year We would like to say thanks to all that has been and yes to all that shall be. God in Jesus has been with us in 2018 in small and big things that came our way. When we thought we couldn t take another step, He was by our side, leading the way and gracing our moments and filling us with hope. Through the mists of grief and sorrow, disease and death, His presence shone through. When we felt happy and successful, too, His presence filled us, showing that all blessings come down from His loving hands. We begin the New Year with hope and optimism. We may have a tendency to carry the sad and bad things that happened in 2018 over to We may have been hurt or disappointed or shocked by what may have happened to us. Sometimes, our choices may have led to consequences we regretted or loathed. At other times, our lives may have veered off into a weary, loveless, and joyless humdrum of life. We have to be mindful about not carrying baggage from last year into the New Year. Also, there is a possibility that we could be suffering from nostalgia for the good and beautiful things that came our way in This could lead us to an idol worship of the memorable things of the past, with the result that we are unable to welcome the present with fresh eyes, open arms, and hopeful hearts. Of course, we worry and fret about how this year will turn out to be. What good things are we going to encounter this New Year? What sad things are going to happen to us? However, let us not seek to see the distant scene. Let us not be overwhelmed by what we have to do or how we must cope with the challenges and ordeals of life. All we have to do is to take one moment at a time: pack that moment with as much love and energy as possible. There may be setbacks and heartaches, but even those will become moments laden with grace and faith. Let s meet each person as if he or she were the only one in this world. Let s deal with the task at hand as if it were the only task to be done in the world. Let s live in love in the present moment. The present moment is where God meets us because our God is the God of the present. Remember the saying: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift---that s why we call it the present. Let us do one tick at a time. We ll tick merrily away the whole year of 2019 and beyond! If God is for us, who can be against us? Let s ponder these insightful sayings: For last year s words belong to last year s language, and next year s words await another voice T.S. Eliot. The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul G.K. Chesterton. Cheers to a new year, and another chance for us to get it right Oprah Winfrey. We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year s Day Edith Lovejoy Pierce. A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other Anonymous. Action: Try these not-so-easy things: Embrace the New Year by trying to shake off sadness or nostalgia for things past. Look at and relate to people without paying attention to their past as if you were meeting them for the first ever time. The past interferes too much in our present and ruins our future. Bring a fresh and unsullied outlook on people and circumstances. Here s a person in front of you, full of possibilities; here is a situation calling for your creative and positive approach. That person s past is gone; the future doesn t exist. This situation or event in this particular form has never happened in your life before. Meet that person in the present moment. Bring all your resources to deal with the present situation. In Ten Languages: Happy New Year! Feliz Año Nuevo! Maligayang Bagong Taon! Buon anno! Is- Sena t-tajba! Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit! Bonne Année! Xin Nian Kuai Le! Urte berri on! Noothana samvatsara shubhakankshalu! Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

6 Reflecting on the Word The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph If you were to choose an adjective to accompany family, what would it be? Holy? Or is it more likely to be dysfunctional? If culture reflects reality, our greatest American playwrights hold up families falling apart as the norm: Eugene O Neil s Tyrone family, Tennessee Williams haunted Southern siblings, Arthur Miller s Willie and Lind Loman and sons, and most recently, the families of Tracy Lett s August: Osage County and Jon Rabin Baitz s Other Desert Cities. Behold, the American family! And yet, granting that every family, like every person, is imperfect and on occasion wounds each other in both small and big ways, we do find holiness in families. It is the holiness that we see in Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, who cared for and respected each other, a holiness that witnesses to the power of God s grace at work in hearts open to it. In today s Gospel we see this gracious care in the worry of parents who could not find their son. We hear it in Mary s anxious words to Jesus, in Jesus fidelity to his dual parents - earthly and heavenly - and in the simple statement that he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. As members of the human family, imperfect and even sinful, we too are graced with a capacity for advancing in wisdom and age and favor before God and one another. Each of us is called to holiness, to a fullness of being made possible by being open to the loving touch of God s grace made visible in the Incarnation. For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion Do Mary, Joseph, and Jesus have anything to teach us about what it means to be family? What does it mean to be a holy family? Is it a matter of doing holy actions, or saying holy words? Living and Praying with the Word Loving Father, you have created all who have ever lived in your image and likeness. Help us to recognize all others as our brothers and sisters and to honor, respect, forgive, and love them as your children. Together, enable us to bring your peace and justice, healing and reconciliation to our world. - Living the Word Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at Baptisms are generally celebrated monthly on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English.
