4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Month of November to Honor the Faithful Departed: In the midst of our hectic activities, let s keep those who have died from our families and circles of friends in our hearts and minds and prayers. Our love for them continues and survives death. Our faith informs us of the new life they are given, thanks to the resurrection of our Lord who vanquished sin and death. Our hope impels us to long for union with our dear departed when the time comes, in the Kingdom of God. If our dear ones are buried in a cemetery close by, it would be wonderful to visit their graves and pray. It s been our Catholic way of doing things for a couple of thousand years. We celebrated a special Mass on November 03 rd for those who died in our parish community in the last year. Their names are on the banners in the church. As we pray for them, let s learn to look at death in a realistic, faith-filled, liberating way, so that the inevitability of death can deepen our desire for life and love. Death can enhance our love for life. Think about what Angelina Jolie has said: If I think more about death than some other people, it is probably because I love life more than they do. My Pilgrimage to the Holy Land---Tel Aviv, Caesarea, Mt. Carmel, & Haifa: I was with 26 other pilgrims in the Holy Land visiting the holiest shrines connected with the life of Christ. I felt---and so did everyone else in the group---completely safe travelling through the Holy Land. I m amazed at how the media often can give us distorted and negatively exaggerated views of what goes on in the world. We do need to be careful about what to believe when it comes to the media reports. It applies to everything in the media, including politics, economics, religion, and business. We landed in Tel Aviv to be picked up by our 206 Tour group. We spent overnight in a hotel right on the Mediterranean shore. After dinner, I went for a walk along the beach. The rough waves fogged my glasses with the ocean spray. The next day, we were on our way on a comfortable bus going up north along the Mediterranean shore. We stopped at Caesarea and viewed an impressive stadium and the archaeological remains of this old Roman and Byzantine city and port. In this city of Caesarea, as we read in the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter saw the vision that Christianity was not for the newly converted Jews only but for the whole world. Hence his mission to the Roman official Cornelius and his household. Also, from this city of Caesarea, St. Paul set sail to Rome, which paved the way for the spread of Christianity outside the Jewish lands. Our next stop along the Mediterranean was Mount Carmel which, as you know, is famous for Prophet Elijah s life and his adventures with the false gods. We saw the cave of Elijah. There is the famous 12 th -century Stella Maris (Star of the Sea) Carmelite Monastery here dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, bearing testimony to the origin of the Carmelite movement in the Church. I know some in our parish are dedicated to the Carmelite spirituality. Among their saints are: St. Theresa of Avila, St. Theresa of Lisieux, and St. John of the Cross. Our next stop was Haifa, the third largest city in Israel, also on the coast of the Mediterranean, a port city. It s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, built on the slopes of Mount Carmel. There s a familiar saying in Israel: You play in Tel Aviv, pray in Jerusalem, and stay in Haifa. 3 rd Grade Mass Last Sunday: We had an upbeat and energetic Mass for the third graders from our school and Faith Formation program last Sunday. It was an occasion to give them each a book on the lives of saints. Let the saints be and become the role models for these children and their families. Sometimes, our role models in sports and other areas of life end up disappointing us. The Saints will never let us down. Their light shines brightly, consistently, and eternally. I have asked the children to pick and choose three favorite saints for themselves and try to emulate their example. Can I share with you my own three favorites: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and St. Therese of Child Jesus also known as the Little Flower. I have had the pleasure of visiting their places in Italy, Spain, and France and celebrated Mass in their shrines, an extra bonus for me in loving them and imitating their holiness. Capital Campaign Update: Here s a message from Terri Ciardella: Our work continues...the landscaping near the playground is near completion. What remains is the installation of the bricks to recognize the donors of the trees that were planted. We selected a hearty, succulent ground cover with heart shape leaves for the area which remains green and flowers all year round. Redwood trees have been placed in the open area just up from the church. Where once was a mound of wood chips will be the redwood trees and plants. The plants currently in the fountain area are going to be relocated to the redwood area (along with other plants) and then the fountain planter will be replanted in a more traditional style landscaping. Our goal is to get all the legacy items in place so we can focus on the upper lot and school entrance. Thank you to all those who have supported and continue to support this much needed project. Funny Catholic Sayings: People are funny. They want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church. Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn t belong. 6 Can you spare an hour for Jesus? St. Veronica s Eucharistic Adoration team always welcomes new adorers to sign up to spend one hour a week (or more, if desired) with the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration occurs in the St. Veronica side chapel from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except parish holidays. Those who are interested are invited to call the parish office at to submit their name and phone number so a member of the Adoration team can contact them. Reflecting on the Word The Basilica of St. John Lateran was given to the church by the Emperor Constantine shortly after he legalized Christianity in the early fourth century. It was dedicated as a place of Christian worship on November 9, 324 CE. It, and not St. Peter s Basilica as many people think, is the cathedral of the city of Rome and thus the home church of the bishop of Rome - that is, the pope. It might seem strange to celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of somebody else s church building. But this feast reminds us that our communion with the Church of Rome and her bishop, the pope, is one of the things that unites us in the Catholic Church. In the baptistery of the church of St. John Lateran, where the Christians of Rome have been baptized since the fourth century, there is an ancient inscription that reads: There is no barrier between those who are reborn and made one by the one font, the one Spirit, and the one faith... The Church asks us to join in this celebration because those who have worshiped at St. John Lateran, from the Emperor Constantine in the fourth century to the humblest Roman worker worshiping there on this day, are our brothers and sisters in the Holy Spirit. This feast reminds us that part of our faith is that the Church is the temple in which God s Spirit dwells. The celebration of this feast is a challenge to love our fellow Catholics as those who, along with us, are the stones that are being built into that living temple. The stones of this temple are bound together by a love that we live not just inwardly, but also in the outward forms - church buildings, institutions, ecclesiastical offices that make visible our bonds of unity.
