Your financial contribution helps to support the struggling Christian community in that region and to protect Christianity s holiest places, including some of the very locations where Jesus himself lived and ministered. The collection is taken up three times during the afternoon so those who are only able to attend a portion of the services will have the opportunity to contribute. In his Lent 2012 communication, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, reminds us that this year, Good Friday seems more fitting than ever as a sign of the needs of both pastors and faithful, which are bound up with the sufferings of the entire Middle East. 4 From the Pastor's Desk Dear Parishioners, Palm Sunday: Paul Grant and Marian Palmer sing: Hey, King! Where s your crown, where s your Cadillac? I ve never seen a king before on a donkey s back. On Palm Sunday, we commemorate our King s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Henry Hart Milman says: Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; O Christ, thy triumphs now begin, O er captive death and conquered sin. Jesus triumphal entry will turn into dark, sad days of excruciating suffering and shameful death. But it will all pale in the resplendent glory that will dawn on Easter. The profound Christian insight is that it s always through the cross that we find our glory. Without suffering, there is no love, no redemption, no new life. Suffering is redemptive. Death is the way to resurrection. Let s look at the face of Christ this Holy Week. Let s look into his tender eyes. Let s place our hand on the heart of Christ. Let s try to enter his mind and heart to know his thoughts and feelings. One practical suggestion I ll make for the Holy Week is this. Can you choose one of the passion narratives from one of the four gospels? Every gospel, toward the end, has the account of Jesus suffering and death. Go to a church or any other calm place. Sit quietly. Read slowly and prayerfully this passion narrative and try to be silent for a few minutes after reading it. It will only take about 20 minutes or so to do this. You will not regret spending some quality time on this simple form of prayer. If you feel inspired, speak to Jesus in your words. St. Ignatius of Loyola suggests in the Spiritual Exercises to stand before the cross and ask: Lord, what have I done for you? What am I doing for you? What shall I do for you? Via Dolorosa: When I went with some of our parishioners to the Holy Land a couple of years ago, we walked the holy route, Via Dolorosa, which in Latin means the way of suffering. It s in the Old City of Jerusalem. Tradition has long held that Jesus walked through this way toward Calvary. This route winds through narrow streets with thousands of shops on either side. That is why we had to wake up early in the morning by 4:30 a.m. and get to this place and start the Way of the Cross by 5:30 a.m. so that we could complete our prayers by the time shops opened. Our Way of the Cross along this holy route ended with Mass at the Church of Holy Sepulchre. It was one of the most memorable walks of our life ever. We walked the same way Jesus did! We were filled with sadness for Jesus carrying the cross, but we were also filled with hope and gratitude for what Jesus brought for us through his ultimate sacrifice. Word of God: This Palm Sunday, the Word of God is all about suffering. The first reading is from Isaiah about the suffering servant. He suffers a lot, but he places all his trust in God. The responsorial psalm is about: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? A very powerful sentiment indeed! How many times have we felt this way in our life? We sometimes feel that we are abandoned by everyone, including God. Jesus himself felt this way. He used these very words on the cross. Jesus knows our human frustrations and anguish because he himself has gone through those dark moments in his life. That s the reason we can go to Jesus with great confidence. He knows exactly our struggles and sufferings. The second reading is the famous hymn from the letter to the Philippians, which celebrates Jesus s humility, obedience to his Father, his dying on the cross, his exaltation by his heavenly Father above everything and everyone. The gospel reading, the passion narrative, is taken from Mark s gospel. On Good Friday, the passion narrative will be from John s gospel. As we go through these readings, the Lord will speak to us tenderly and give us the grace to enter more deeply the sufferings and death of Jesus so that we can rise with him to a new life in the glory of the resurrection. Good Friday quotes: "Christmas and Easter can be subjects for poetry, but Good Friday, like Auschwitz, cannot. The reality is so horrible, it is not surprising that people should have found it a stumbling block to faith."---w. H. Auden. The celebration of your special day starts with a phone call to our Parish Offices to schedule an appointment to meet with a member of the clergy. Our parish priests, staff, coordinator and music director will all work with you to create a memorable liturgy. For a couple asking to be wed in the Church, the policy of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco states that arrangements for marriage are to be made at least six months in advance. These months are meant to give couples the opportunity for prayerful reflection on Christian marriage and for consideration of their future life as "two who will be made one." Calendars fill up quickly and schedules get busy, so don't delay in setting up your initial appointment.

6 Palm Sunday Fill-in-the-Blank Puzzle Solution to Last Week s Puzzle Family Connection from Palm Sunday, also called Passion Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy Week. During this week, we prepare ourselves for Easter by prayerfully reflecting on the events of Jesus passion and death. During this week, your family might display a crucifix in a prominent place as reminder of the salvation that Christ won for us. This can also serve as the focal point for family prayer during Holy Week. Because of the length and complexity of the passion narrative, it is difficult for children to remain attentive when it is proclaimed in its entirety. Families can make it a tradition to read a portion of this Sunday s Gospel each day of Holy Week, providing ample opportunity for children to ask questions and respond to the events described. In this way, the entire week can become a way of the cross. Each day during Holy Week, the family gathers in a prayer space with a crucifix as its focal point. The passion found in Mark s Gospel might be read as follows: Sunday: Mark 11:1-10; Monday: Mark 14:1-11; Tuesday: Mark 14:12-26; Wednesday: Mark 14:27-52; Thursday: Mark 14:53-72; Friday: Mark 15: 1-41; Saturday: Mark After reading from the Gospel each night, the family might reflect on the reading together. Conclude your time together by praying the Lord s Prayer or singing an appropriate hymn, such as Were You There When They Crucified My Lord? - from Loyola Press Ministry Lenten Fact Faith Formation News As a reminder, there will be no Faith Formation classes on Wednesday, April 4 and Saturday, April 7. Classes resume the following week. Thanks to all who have turned in their donation for Operation Rice Bowl. Donations will still be accepted following the Easter break. According to the account of a fifth-century Spanish pilgrim to the Holy Land, Passion Sunday Mass was celebrated in Jerusalem at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. After this, the people were invited to meet again in the afternoon at the Mount of Olives, in the Church of Eleona (the grotto of the Our Father ). They then proceeded to the Church of the Ascension for a service consisting of hymns and antiphons, readings and prayers, where at five o clock in the afternoon the Gospel of the palms was read and the procession set out for the city. The people responded to the antiphons with the acclamation, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, as we say even today. - from
