4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Extraordinary Synod on Family Life: Is family life important for you? It is vital to the mission of the Catholic Church as well. The Synod of Bishops on the Family is meeting at present at the Vatican. This meeting from October 4-25, 2015 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Synod of Bishops. The topic of this meeting is: The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world. The gathering will reflect further on the points discussed so as to formulate appropriate pastoral guidelines for the pastoral care of the person and the family. As you may recall, a couple of years ago there was a questionnaire sent by the Vatican to Catholic parishes around the world to receive feedback on aspects of marriage and family life. Last year in October, a meeting of bishops at the Vatican reflected on the findings of that feedback and initiated a conversation. This October s meeting will continue the conversations and is likely to come up with ways of ministering to people in different, at times difficult, situations of family life. How does the Church---a mother---love, help, and heal her children? While adhering to doctrine, how can the Church be a channel of mercy and tenderness? What should the Church s pastoral approach be to people in various situations of pain and alienation, sadness and loneliness? At the inaugural Mass of this particular synod, Pope Francis gave an inspiring homily on three themes: human loneliness, love between man and woman, and the family life. Grade 4 Mass: Last Sunday at 10:00 a.m. we had the grade 4 Mass for our School and Faith Formation children. It s always a joy to see parents joining the Mass on these occasions. It was also the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In my homily, I invited the families to keep gathering week after week at the Eucharist, the most important event of our parish family life. Summarizing the life of St. Francis of Assisi, I shared that we could take away three things: one, to live more simply and more soulfully as St. Francis did; two, like Francis, we could center our lives on the person of Jesus; three, we could love the earth more and care for it and protect it. The Breakthrough Bible was given to each student. Let God speak to them and their families as they read and meditate on God s Word. Our Teachers are Lectors: As you may have noticed, the school teachers are lectors at some of the weekday Masses when the students are present. I m delighted that they participate in the ministries of the parish and are an inspiration to students. Some of the teachers are also Eucharistic ministers. There is a call to all of us to participate more actively and be engaged in matters of faith and liturgical celebrations. I notice a spirit of renewal in the way school children participate in the weekday Masses. There is much encouragement from the teachers for this. I m grateful for all the ways in which we are involved in the life of the parish. Word of God: The gospel portrays a haunting story of a man who wants to follow Jesus more closely but is unable to because of his possessions. Then Jesus goes on to give his reflections on how our wealth can prevent us from being the persons God calls us to be. It s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle rather than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. When we come to rely on our possessions, we come to have a false sense of security about life; that we can somehow be happy because of things we accumulate; that we do not have to bother with putting our trust in and dependence on God. Jesus gives many teachings about how to approach wealth. Wealth is a servant, a slave, not our master. We need to use everything, as St. Ignatius of Loyola would say, in so far as they help us to fulfill the purpose God has for each one of us. If things prevent us from being truly happy and internally free, then they are hindrances. Life is full of choices; the ones that may be helpful for someone may not be meant for us. We have to honestly before God choose those that will bring peace and happiness to our minds and hearts. 5 October is the Month of the Holy Rosary The purpose of the Rosary is to remind Catholics of certain important events (or mysteries) in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are 20 mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, divided equally into the JOYFUL MYSTERIES prayed on Mondays and Saturdays, the LUMINOUS MYSTERIES prayed on Thursdays, the SORROWFUL MYSTERIES prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the GLORIOUS MYSTERIES prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays, except Sundays of the Christmas season (Joyful) and Lenten season (Sorrowful). Families can take the time together each day to pray the Rosary! St. Veronica Youth Ministry is Back! Teens and their Parents are Invited to Join Our Mass and Informational Open House Sunday, October 25, :30 a.m. Mass Open House with refreshments will follow in Falcon Hall (cafeteria) Our Youth Ministry Core Team will be commissioned during the 11:30 a.m. Mass The St. Veronica Youth Ministry is open to all teenagers of our parish who have received the sacrament of Confirmation. Through a safe and spiritual outlet, the aim of the St. Veronica Youth Ministry is to assist in the growth of young Catholics through social, spiritual and service-oriented activities while promoting the teachings, traditions, and beliefs of the Catholic Church. Capital Campaign Update We have two more items to check off our list to officially complete the construction part of the project. 1) The 5-foot canopy to identify and enhance the school entrance is being installed this weekend. 2) The School signage letters facing Alida Way will be installed later this month. We are very excited to have this three-year project near completion. Thank you again for your patience, support and generosity. 6 Volunteer Ministry Opportunities at St. Veronica Due to the retirement of some of our longtime volunteers, the 8:30 a.m. Mass is in need of new ushers to help with the collection as well as seating people at Mass and passing out bulletins. Of special need are men who sing in the tenor or bass range. Reflecting on the Word Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time It has been said (or at least it used to be) that sex and money are two things that you do not discuss in polite company. Jesus doesn t seem to agree - or maybe he doesn t consider his listeners to be polite company. Last week we got challenging words from Jesus on marriage and this week we have no less challenging words on wealth. The Letter to the Hebrews says that the word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword, revealing the thoughts of the heart, and in the Gospel reading Jesus words cut to the heart of the rich man who asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. For though this man fulfills the commandments sincerely, Jesus knows that he has not yet put himself fully in the service of God. His wealth still matters more to him than following Jesus. This man is not alone. When Jesus speaks of how hard it is for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God, he is recognizing how money exerts such an attractive force on us that we are constantly tempted to put it first in our lives. But that is the place that only God should occupy. Money seems to promise the happiness and security that only God can deliver. Both of the things that we should not discuss in polite company - sex and money - are truly and genuinely good things. But when we put them in the place of God, when we prefer them to God s kingdom, then we become like the camel trying to squeeze through the eye of the needle. For prayerful consideration and discussion When have I felt the word of God - whether in the form of scripture or in a homily - cut me to my heart? Is there anything that I would not give up in order to follow Jesus?
