2 APRIL SOUNDINGS FROM THE WOODED KNOLL With Easter Sunday drawing near, I have a confession to make: in anticipation of that grand and glorious celebration, I m thinking less about the resurrection of Jesus than about Krispy Kreme donuts. Starting with Ash Wednesday, I commenced a fast from all sweets. All my usual staples are gone: Snickers bars, Mrs. Pumpkin s brownies, home-baked goodies, and Dewey s ice creme. A more spiritual person would surely manage this deprivation better than I. But frankly, I m fed I m thinking less about the resurrection of Jesus than about Krispy Kreme donuts. up with passing on dessert. Despite what the health food gurus tell you, a sugar-free diet does not issue in happiness and bliss. So why during Lent do I impose this minor discipline upon my ever errant, all-consuming appetite? To challenge one of my pet addictions, to confront my idols and demons, and to create a new kind of space and rhythm. It is my hope that this fast, like all fasts, will disrupt the status quo of my usual self so God will have a little more maneuvering room in my life. That happened once or twice during my Lenten journey. God s presence surprised me at the edge of my hunger. God s word sounded where my sweet tooth used to be. God s Spirit chased off my sugar cravings Two New Art Prints As our congregation moves toward Easter, two new art prints have been hung in the narthex: The Disciples Peter and John Running to Sepulchre on the Morning of the Resurrection, circa 1898 by Eugene Burnard and The Three Marys at the Tomb by William Adolphe Bouguereau Our thanks to the Music, Worship, and the Arts Ministry team, chaired by Bambi Setzer, for selecting these pieces and to Bill Hearn for so beautifully matting and framing them. and whispered, My grace is sufficient; my power grows strong in your weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). But this has gone on long enough. I m ready to meet Jesus somewhere besides the wilderness. I ve discovered I like the partying Jesus (Matthew 11:19) a lot more than the fasting one (Matthew 4:2). Our Jewish friends have a tradition called Kol Nidre meaning All Vows. On the holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), the cantor chants, All vows, obligations, and oaths whereby we may be bound, from this Day of Atonement until the next are deemed absolved, forgiven, annulled, and void, and made of no effect; they shall not bind us nor have power over us. In like vein, the New Testament book of Colossians exults that God forgave us all our trespasses, erasing the record that stood against us with its legal demands. Jesus set this aside, nailing it to the cross (2:13b- 14). I take that to mean Jesus is poised to set me free, not only of my sins, but of my Lenten promises too. Thank God, Easter is coming: God s life for our death, God s grace for our sin, God s light in our darkness. So yes, I will be in worship on Easter Sunday morning, ready to sing my heartfelt Alleluias. But right after church, I ll be crashing a certain establishment on Stratford Road, whether the Hot Donuts sign is on or not. ~Blessings, Bob Setzer, Jr. Samaritan Ministries' Community Open House Sunday, April 12, 2 to 5 p.m. Come join us for a tour of our new home, 414 E. Sundays, April 19, 26 & May 3, 9:45-10:45 a.m. There is a robust and diverse food movement across the globe. At the same time, health systems and communities are struggling with the burdens of chronic, diet-related diseases, and an obesity epidemic. What is a food desert? What is community food security? How are these things related, and how does our faith help us understand and respond? Come join the conversation. I. Eating as a moral and spiritual act (Fellowship Hall, Bldg. B) II. Access and disparities in food and health (Dining Room, Bldg. B) III. Faith-fueled engagement in communities (Fellowship Hall, Bldg. B) Generosity: A Short Course After Easter, as our church embraces our significant capital campaign, Sunday School classes will have the option of thinking and talking more about generosity. A curriculum has been tailored expressly for Knollwood to help us explore a range of views (biblical and personal) of money, ownership, wealth, scarcity, and the financial implications of discipleship and faith. Prayer texts will also be available to enhance our spiritual reflection. 4 APRIL LIFE OF OUR CHURCH AND COMMUNITY Flowers for the Easter Cross Worshipers are invited to bring fresh-cut flowers to place on the cross outside the sanctuary on Easter morning to celebrate Christ s resurrection. ~continued from page 1 questions, ideas, and perspectives about the campaign. You don t want to miss this opportunity to learn as much as you can about this important project! Mark your calendar for the campaign s Advance Commitment Lunch on Sunday, April 26 after the worship service. The lunch s purpose is to provide information about the who, why, when, where and how of advance giving decisions by members of the congregation. The brief program will explain how advance commitments can really help the church obtain its highest level of commitments. Though no commitments will be asked for at the lunch, those who attend and who already know their commitment amount may fill out a card and turn it in. However, many in attendance may decide to ADVANCE Commitment Lunch Sunday, April 26 after the worship service take their commitment card and privacy envelope with them for further prayer and discussion about their commitment. We hope you will use the materials and small groups to learn more about this exciting campaign and prayerfully consider how God wants you to be involved! Scholarships For Bolton Bolton administrators are looking for 50 scholarships of $25 each to support the Bolton Girls on the Move extracurricular activity. The Girls on the Move program uses running training as a way to build a supportive safe group for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls. Last fall 15 girls ran in the Mistletoe 5K. This spring 21 girls signed up for the group and their hope is to run in Habitat for Humanity s Hammerbird 5K in May. The girls need help raising funds for the race entry fees for the girls and their required adult buddy runner. The school would love to provide each girl with a water bottle and T- shirt as well. Kathy Bryant, Bolton assistant principal and program sponsor, reports that at a recent session the participating girls were asked why they chose to join Girls on the Move. One girl responded, I survived a brain tumor when I was 3 so I can survive this. Another told the group, I survived abuse by my step-father. And finally from another girl, My mother has depression and I ve never met my father, but this group makes me feel special. Can you help support these girls with a $25 scholarship? If so please write a check to Bolton Elementary and note on the memo line Bolton Girls on the Move. 6 APRIL LIFE OF OUR CHURCH AND COMMUNITY Final Education Building Renovations to Begin Three of Knollwood s most frequently-used spaces will be renovated this summer, thanks to members generosity in the Open Doors capital campaign. The Fellowship Hall, Dining Room, and kitchen upgrades will complete priority needs identified in that campaign plan. This final phase of renovation to the Education Building will begin in July, 2015 and is expected to take approximately 4 weeks. Work in the Fellowship Hall will include new flooring, window blinds, paint, and additional storage space for tables and chairs. The Dining Room will also get new flooring, wall treatments, HVAC and ceiling. The kitchen will be reconfigured to provide improved work-flow and traffic patterns to reflect its current use, based on input from those who work in the kitchen often. The goal of this final phase is the creation of a welcoming, comfortable space, consistent with already-completed renovations in the Education and Sanctuary Buildings. Temporary meeting and dining areas will be identified to accommodate church activities during the renovation period.
