1 KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Sunday, May 11, :55 a.m. To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness--this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.

2 KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Kenneth J. Meyers One Voice: The Lord be with you. Many Voices: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Blessed Assurance...arr. Robert Hebble Lauren Winkelman, organist THE CHORAL INTROIT Christ Is Alive!...TRURO The Chapel Choir; Charlotte Brown, Director THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Kenneth J. Meyers One Voice: Love one another. Many Voices: This is The Way of Christ. One Voice: Serve one another. Many Voices: This is The Way of Christ. One Voice: Live in peace with one another. Many Voices: This is The Way of Christ. One Voice: Seek justice for one another. Many Voices: This is The Way of Christ. One Voice: We are called to walk, act, speak and live all of our lives with the love of Christ Jesus. All: Come, let us follow The Way, let us love one another, and let us worship Christ our Savior. THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Kenneth J. Meyers *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 243 Christ Is Alive!...TRURO [Stanzas 2-5] CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)...Molly Brummett God of Steadfast Love, we confess that our love is short-sighted. We love our families and friends, we love those close around us, we show partiality to those in positions of power over us, and we ignore those who seem irrelevant. We are selfish with our love, loving those who will love us, who will help us. Forgive us, loving Jesus, for not loving the way You did, by laying down Your life for the lost and the least, the poor and the broken. Forgive us, loving Jesus, for being shortsighted, and not seeing our brothers and sisters in the world. Call us back into * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2

3 the ways of Your love, away from the ways of the world. In the name of Jesus the Christ, the Love of God, we pray. THE SILENT CONFESSION THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON For the love of God is this, that we obey God s commandments for these commandments are not burdensome. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey our Lord s commandments. Christ s commandment is to love one another. Do this, and live. Amen. (From 1 John 5) LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Deuteronomy 32: Molly Brummett One Voice: This is the word of God. Many Voices: Thanks be to God. Meyers THE CHILDREN S CHOIR ANTHEM Prayer for Mothers... Donna Butler The Chapel Choir; Charlotte Brown, Director God bless the mother who sings to her child, peaceful and calm, her words soft and mild. God bless the mother awake in the night, rocking her child til morning light. Gather all mothers in tender embrace. Grant them your courage, your wisdom and grace. Honor their place in your sacred design, of healing the world, one child at a time. God bless the mother forgiving and wise, sharing God s grace through the light in her eyes. God bless the mother oppressed by her fears, carried by faith til hope reappears. Gather all mothers in tender embrace. Grant them your courage, your wisdom and grace. Honor their place in your sacred design, of healing the world, one child at a time. *THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 13: Lucrecia Norman One Voice: This is the Gospel of Christ. Children s Church is on the first and third, fifth Sundays of the month. Worship Care for preschool and kindergarten is offered weekly. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE... Lucrecia Norman THE ANTHEM My Shepherd Will Supply My Need...arr. John Carter The Chancel Choir; Mary Ann Davis, soprano My Shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his name; in pastures fresh he makes me feed beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake his ways and leads me for his mercies sake, in paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay; one word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread; my cup with blessings overflows, thy oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; oh, may thy house be my abode and all my work be praise. There would I find a 3

4 settled rest, while others go and come, while others go and come; no more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home. THE SERMON... The Knollwood Youth Guitar Ensemble is composed of guitarists from elementary through college aged. The only requirements to join are to have your own classical guitar and the ability to read fluently in the first playing position. Other than that, just being at the rehearsals and having a great time making beautiful music with one another is all that's needed. If you have questions or are interested in lessons, feel free to Marty Edwards at martyedwardsguitar.com. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! 6 FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given with special love in memory of Frances Barrier, Gene s mother, and with special love in memory of Marjorie Wilson Gardner, Ellen s mother, by Gene, Ellen, Thomas, Tiffany, Ava, Gardner, Heather, Livy, and Maya. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The Easter banner views Jesus resurrection from the inside of the tomb looking out. The grave clothes reflect the note in John 20:7 that the burial linens were left in the tomb with the head wrapping separate from the rest. The contrasting darkness within the tomb and the brightness outside point to the light of God s new day breaking upon a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). As Jesus exits the tomb, clothed in a loin cloth, he is about to surprise Mary with the realization, The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! (John 20:18). The artist who painted the banner is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B.
