1 KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP TRINITY SUNDAY GRADUATE RECOGNITION SUNDAY Sunday, May 31, :55 a.m. To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness--this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.
2 KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Diane Lipsett One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Jubiloso... Linda Lamb High School Bells THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Diane Lipsett One: God, you call each of us to serve you, and we answer, All: Here I am! One: Jesus, you call each of us to follow you, and we answer, All: Here I am! One: Holy Spirit, you call each of us to worship you this day, and we answer, All: Here I am! THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Diane Lipsett *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 2 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty...NICAEA CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE CALL TO CONFESSION... Molly Brummett Wudel As we come before the Lord, seeking a word of calling, let us make the confession of our sins to God. THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison) Lord our God, our lives are filled with sin. We forget our neighbors' needs and do not love you above all else. We need a Savior. Help us to be ready for Jesus in our hearts. Help us, like Samuel, to hear when you call our name. THE SILENT CONFESSION THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD THE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION... Kenneth A. Wilson Our Lord, we know that when you speak to us you call us to listen. But listening is often hard for us. There are so many other sounds we hear and thoughts we think which crowd out our ability to hear you. And so as we approach your Word this day, * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2
3 we ask for your Spirit to give us ears that hear well, minds that listen attentively, and hearts that respond obediently. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: 1 Samuel 3: Kenneth A. Wilson, One: This is the word of God. Rachel Revelle, Diane Lipsett All: Thanks be to God. THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: 2 Corinthians 4: Corinne Causby One: This is the word of God. Deacon of the Week All: Thanks be to God. THE CHILDREN S TIME...Rachel Revelle THE ANTHEM Prayer of the Children...Kurt Bestor, arr. Andrea S. Klouse The Youth Choir tenors and basses Can you hear the prayer of the children on bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room? Empty eyes with no more tears to cry, turning heavenward toward the light. Cryin Jesus help me to see the mornin light of one more day, but if I should die before I wake, I pray my soul to take. Can you feel the hearts of the children aching for home, for something of their very own. Reaching hands with nothing to hold on to, but hope for a better day, a better day. Cryin Jesus help me to feel the love again in my own land, but if unknown roads lead away from home, give me loving arms, away from harm. Can you hear the voice of the children softly pleading for silence in their shattered world? Angry guns preach a gospel full of hate, blood of the innocent on their hands. Cryin Jesus help me to feel the sun again upon my face? For when darkness clears, I know you re near, bringing peace again. Dali cúje te sve djecje molitve? [Translation: Can you hear the prayer of the children?] *THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 2:23-3:6... Molly Brummett Wudel One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. *THE HYMN OF DEVOTION, NO. 395 How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord... REPTON During the last stanza, children who are in first grade through third grade are invited to meet the Children s Worship leaders in the narthex. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE... We pray that you will know the peace and the presence of God in the good days and the difficult days. We pray for the strength to release you into the world and into the protective care of God. One: Today, I, your youth minister and fellow pilgrim, pray that you may always recognize God s presence and know God s love along the journey. May you continue your journey of faith assured that God continues to reveal God s self in surprising ways and will continue to offer steadfast presence and hope for your lives. All: Today, we, your church community who nurtured you in the faith, pray that you may always know God as God goes before you and alongside you to show and share what love can do. Take faith with you as you begin this new journey. May faith lead you into the parts of your life not yet traveled by love and into the parts of the world unexplored by grace. 6 TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. You are invited to the narthex for a brief time of fellowship following worship where you can meet church members and clergy, and learn more about this congregation. We would ask that you record your visit by filling out the friendship pad in the pew; addresses are especially helpful. To learn more about Knollwood Baptist Church, find us online at You can also receive our newsletter and announcements by ing colleen@knollwood.org, or just call the church office, Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP We welcome Rev. Lucrecia Chris Norman to the pulpit this morning. Chris serves as the minister to senior adults and the weekday preschool here at Knollwood. The Prayer for Illumination and the Prayer of Confession are adapted from worship materials prepared by The Calvin Institute of Worship. The Old Testament adaptation is from Carolyn Brown s Worshiping with Children. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net # A FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Dr. Jack Ricks Noffsinger by Shirley and Lynda Noffsinger and family ABOUT OUR BANNERS The way is a familiar biblical theme encompassing such truths as the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3), Jesus as the way (John 14:6), and the way as a description of Christian discipleship (Acts 9:2). The words on the banner point to the movements of faith: Longing for God that impels us forward in the spiritual journey; Learning the way of the Scriptures and the way of Jesus; Loving as our love for God and our neighbors deepens; and Living as we live out of Christian faith and witness in the world. The colors of the banner emphasize green for ordinary time, the period in the church year between Pentecost and Advent. The artist who designed and painted the banners is our own Bambi Setzer.
