ABOUT OUR WORSHIP On the Sundays nearest Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day, our nation s flag is placed in the narthex in gratitude for those whose national service helped ensure the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Our hymns today relate to the scripture and to the sermonic emphasis on I John 3:8-24. The Hymn of Praise, I ll Praise My Maker While I ve Breath, is one of the many dozens of Psalms that Isaac Watts Christianized in his 1719 volume The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament, and Apply d to the Christian State and Worship. Dr. Watts paraphrased the original Psalm, translating from the Hebrew into metricized and rhyming English poetry. Following our singing of Watts version, we will hear WFU Divinity School intern Jesse Sorrell read Psalm 146 as our Old Testament lesson for the day. Both the 2nd and 3rd hymns today are based on the ideas of I John - that we love one another as Christ has commanded us. If the Father of English Hymnody is the esteemed Dr. Watts, the 2nd most important English Hymnist has to be Charles Wesley. In 1747 this Methodist penned what must be the best know hymn based on these I John ideas, Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. The concluding hymn today, also based on I John 3, Help Us Accept Each Other was written in 1975 by another English hymnist, contemporary Fred Kaan. We will sing this hymn to the tune AURELIA. We normally sing this tune to the hymn The Church s One Foundation. The Youth Choir will sing a contemporary setting of Psalm 150 as their Anthem of Praise. This Psalm will be sung in Latin. The young people are preparing this work as part of their festival literature for the March 2016 Cooperative Baptist Fellowships choir festival that will be held at Knollwood. 6 FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in memory of Judy Felty on her birthday by Bubber Felty, Chris Felty, and Christopher Felty. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The way is a familiar biblical theme encompassing such truths as the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3), Jesus as the way (John 14:6), and the way as a description of Christian discipleship (Acts 9:2). The words on the banner point to the movements of faith: Longing for God that impels us forward in the spiritual journey; Learning the way of the Scriptures and the way of Jesus; Loving as our love for God and our neighbors deepens; and Living as we live out of Christian faith and witness in the world. The colors of the banner emphasize green for ordinary time, the period in the church year between Pentecost and Advent. The artist who designed and painted the banners is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship resumes this month for 1st through 3rd graders. It meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month. During the Hymn of Devotion, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk together to Children s Worship (B244). After the worship service, parents pick up their children from B244. Volunteers are needed to help chaperone the children during that time. If you are interested in volunteering one Sunday, please contact Amine Seifert, amine@knollwood.org. For the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays children are invited to enjoy the worship service with their families. Children s activity bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. BENEVOLENCE OFFERING On Communion Sunday, a benevolence offering is taken to help with benevolent needs in the Knollwood family and wider community. Ushers will be in the narthex following worship to receive donations. HONORING KNOLLWOOD VETERANS Today, November 8 - Knollwood veterans will be honored with their photographs on display in the church Narthex. The Senior Adult Luncheons began many years ago as a memorial to Brona Sink by her husband, Clyde. He designated monies to provide for the spring and fall luncheons each year. Norma Turnham now continues this tradition in memory of both her parents, Clyde and Brona Sink. Please join us. 7 DR. DEREK HICKS PREACHING Sunday, November 15 - As our congregation continues to explore the theme of Welcoming the Other, Dr. Derek Hicks will be our pulpit guest on Sunday, Nov. 15. Dr. Hicks is Professor of Religion and Culture and scholar of African American Religion at Wake Forest University School of Divinity. During October, Dr. Hicks wowed our Wednesday night crowd with his personal and scholarly sharing about the vitality of African-American spirituality. His is an eloquent and important voice in our community. Parents of youth and any other interested KBC members will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 in the Noffsinger Youth Bldg. Then from 6:15-7:00, Middle School and High School youth will convene during their regular Sunday night activities to give feedback to the Search Committee about the profile of the candidate needed to fill this important ministry position. CITY WITH DWELLINGS OVERFLOW SHELTERS KBC will partner for the third year with the City with Dwellings overflow homeless shelter at St. Timothy s Episcopal. The shelter provides a warm and safe space for about 20 women each night Dec. 1 through Mar. 31. KBC volunteers are needed every Thursday to provide dinner and snack bags, help with check-in, and stay overnight. I am in the process of working toward my Gold Award in Girl Scouts and starting the second half of my project of collecting school supplies. These will be distributed during January to children in Bolton and Ward Elementary schools Backpack Program. This will give the schools a needed restock of supplies halfway through the year.
