ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Today s service will focus on WELCOME. Just as school children are welcomed for a new school year, we welcome each of you to the beginning of a new year of church activities at Knollwood as we worship, learn and play together. As part of this welcome emphasis, we offer blessing and thanksgiving for our Sunday School teachers. The three hymns today share this emphasis on welcome, as we sing these words together: Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd s flock and fold, I m gonna eat at the welcome table, and Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace. We express appreciation to Knollwood musicians Kathryn Ashworth, Wendy Oakley, Beth Sanders, Richard Vinson, and Marty Edwards for sharing their musical gifts this morning. Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. Holton, Jr., and Clarence M. Kirk by Mark, Melanie, and Kirk Holton. The white rose on the altar is given by Knollwood Baptist Church in memory of Ruby Sheridan. It is a symbol of the love and esteem in which this community of faith held her. ABOUT OUR BANNERS In the Bible and in church tradition, the dove and fire symbolize the Holy Spirit. According to the four Gospels, the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove at his baptism (Mark 1:10 and parallels). John the Baptist promised the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16). From Moses encounter with God by the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) to the tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), fire is a sign of God s riveting, transforming presence. The Pentecost banner depicts the fire of God s challenge and the dove of God s gentle loving care. The artist who designed and painted the Pentecost banner is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship for 1st through 3rd graders meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month. During the Hymn of Devotion, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk together to Children s Worship (B244). After the worship service, parents pick up their children from B244. For the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays children are invited to enjoy the worship service with their families. Children's worship bags, activity bulletins and sermon notes are available in the narthex. TONIGHT, AUGUST 27, KNOLLWOOD YOUTH MINISTRY BEGINS KBC.ym is back up and running full-force starting tonight! Join us in downstairs in Bldg. Lee Hill and Dr. Bill J. Leonard in Conversation: The Spiritual and the Social- Two vibrant leaders, friends to Knollwood, will join us to reflect on church and culture, ministry and service, race and justice, generational change, and what a difference a decade makes. Lee Hill is Senior Pastor at Christian Fellowship Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in San Diego. From he served as Knollwood s youth minister before moving to Riverside Church in New York City. Bill Leonard is founding dean of the School of Divinity at Wake Forest and Dunn Professor of Baptist Studies and Church History. On Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Divinity School s convocation, Bill s work will be honored and Lee will receive the inaugural Bill J. Leonard Distinguished Service Award. The following evening, they ll come our way. Join us for an introduction to or reunion with these dynamic ministers and scholars. Kids Connect (6:15-7:00) Our children will enjoy a taco meal together as we catch up and reconnect after summer break. We'll share celebrations and concerns and some silly Table Talk questions while we eat and visit. After the meal, we will move the chapel for some fun games that will build friendships, encourage cooperation and teamwork, and help us create a welcoming atmosphere for the new year together. Make Wednesday nights a part of your family's school year routine! TONIGHT, AUGUST 27, CUB SCOUT KICKOFF NIGHT Cub Scout Kickoff Night and Parent Orientation in the Fellowship Hall 4:30-6:00 p.m. All current Cubs and any boys (1st-5th grade) are welcome. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY GROUPS Women s Early Morning Bible Study, Tuesdays at 6:30 a.m. This longstanding, committed Bible study group meets weekly in homes and is open to newcomers. This Knollwood Bible study is focused on encouraging mothers of preschool and elementary-age children through scripture and prayer, providing a space for them to renew their spirit through biblical study and fellowship. Lunch With Luke: A Brown Bag Bible Study For Women, Thursdays, 12:15 1:15 p.m. Starting Thursday, Sept. 14, this vibrant new group will begin with a study of the Gospel of Luke, facilitated by Evalynn Davis and using a personal study guide. Bring your own lunch and your Bible. Drinks will be provided and participants will take turns bringing a dessert. 8 COMPANIONS IN CHRIST, FALL 2017 Companions in Christ is a small-group experience designed to bring one into a closer relationship with God and provide an environment where you and others can deepen your experience of God and share your faith journey with fellow seekers. You will discover a variety of spiritual practices that enable you to share more fully in the life of Christ. Companions will meet each Monday morning, beginning Sept. 11, 10:00 am 12:00 p.m. for 28 sessions with breaks during the year. An introductory meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 28. Companions in Christ will be facilitated by Melanie Wilkinson and Evalynn Davis. Ten companions are already committed. We have space for two or three other seekers. Sometimes called yoga for the brain the Zentangle Method is a series of repetitive patterns and deliberate strokes resulting in beautiful unplanned artwork and a relaxed sense of being.
