ABOUT OUR WORSHIP We welcome guest violinist Mary Ellen Goree to worship this morning. Mary Ellen began playing the violin at age five, inspired by her older sister Dorothy (Wagener). She received the BM in violin performance and BA in mathematics from Oberlin, followed by the MM in violin performance from Indiana University. She is the longtime principal second violin of the San Antonio (TX) Symphony and will be returning to Boulder this summer for her 31st season with the Colorado Music Festival, where she is also principal second. Prior to joining the San Antonio Symphony, she held leadership positions in the Shreveport (LA) Symphony and the Yamagata (Japan) Symphony. She and her husband David are the parents of three children, all of whom rejected the violin in favor of other instruments (bass, oboe, and flute respectively). We express appreciation to Knollwood musician Dorothy Wagener for her musical contributions this morning. In today s service, we use the term Gradual for the music following the reading of the Epistle Lesson. Going back to the early church and continuing in liturgical churches today, the reading of scripture is usually followed by singing a Psalm, or a hymn. The music that is sung after the Epistle is called the Gradual, a term going back hundreds of years. Today s Call to Worship was written by Knollwood member Mary Hix. Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A BENEVOLENCE OFFERING On Communion Sunday, a benevolence offering is taken to help with benevolent needs in the Knollwood family and wider community. Ushers will be in the narthex following worship to receive donations. FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in honor of Chrissy Hardy by the children of Knollwood with love and appreciation, and to celebrate her birthday today. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The Easter banner views Jesus resurrection from the inside of the tomb looking out. The grave clothes reflect the note in John 20:7 that the burial linens were left in the tomb with the head wrapping separate from the rest. The contrasting darkness within the tomb and the brightness outside point to the light of God s new day breaking upon a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). As Jesus exits the tomb, clothed in a loin cloth, he is about to surprise Mary with the realization, The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! (John 20:18). The artist who painted the banner is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship for 1st through 3rd graders meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month. During the Hymn of Devotion, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk together to Children s Worship (B244). After the worship service, parents pick up their children from B244. For the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays children are invited to enjoy the worship service with their families. Children's worship bags, activity bulletins and sermon notes are available in the narthex. 6

Generosity Commitment cards are available in the pew racks, if needed. SPRINGTIME CHURCH OUTING TODAY AT 2 P.M. After celebrating Earth Sunday in worship, join Knollwood friends at Bethabara Park on Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. to savor the woods, stream, and fields. Learn about the world we live in while having fun. Enjoy a guided trail walk, explore a stream with nets and experiments, share games and snacks -- all are welcome. FRIDAY, MAY 5, THE CHURCH OFFICES ARE ON THE MOVE The church office will be closed Friday, May 5, as the staff begins moving to the WCC. The phone system will be down Friday. In an emergency, please call a minister s cell phone or use the weekend oncall number The offices reopen on Monday, May 8, in the new building. We will be recruiting volunteers to help people navigate the WCC starting on Monday, May 22, and running for two weeks. Details on how to volunteer will be coming soon. SUNDAY, MAY 21, DEDICATION AND GRAND OPENING OF THE WCC Completion of the Wellness and Community Center is ahead of schedule, and Knollwoodians will begin using the building in late spring. Our congregation, neighbors, community partners, and refugee families will gather for a dedication on Sunday, May 21, beginning with the worship service. Afterward, we will move to the WCC for an afternoon of tours, food, arts activities, games, and fun for all ages. The day will include a complimentary meal served from local food trucks, exercise class demonstrations, and an intergenerational basketball game among other activities. We will offer reserved seating in the Fellowship Hall for our seniors and anyone with mobility challenges so that all can enjoy the day. Look for more details in your mail as the date draws closer. Anne Philpott is chairing the dedication task force for this very special event. SUNDAY, MAY 7, YOUTH SUNDAY Youth Sunday promises to be a profound time of our young people leading us in worship through music, proclamation, readings, and spiritual growth. On that day, we invite you to participate in a special $5 cash donation to support the service and missions work of our youth. WEDNESDAY EVENINGS Come for a healthy dinner and fellowship (5:30-6:05 p.m.), hear the joys and concerns of our community (6:05-6:15 p.m.), then join our adult faith formation time (6:15-7:00 p.m.). May 3 Plowshares and Pruning Hooks How care of the earth and the natural world leads us to God s justice. An adult study and conversation, in the fellowship hall. All are welcome. May 10 Celebrating Children s Music All ages together celebrating our children s choirs, the Hymns for a Lifetime program, and the many leaders who create excellence in music ministry at Knollwood. May 17 Celebrating Church Life The annual meeting of Knollwood Baptist Church, featuring the Grassy Knoll Bluegrass Band. May 24 Celebrating Community here and around the world Our lively end-of-year party will feature delicious foods from Italy, Mexico, and Syria (no charge for dinner). With Professor Jumana Al-Ahmad, MA, Middle Eastern Studies - This high interest learning series resumes with a focus this week on families, gender roles, and Muslims in the West. Even if you missed earlier classes, you are welcome to come learn some basics of Islamic faith, some features of Arabic

8 culture, and some key Arabic phrases. Our guest instructor, Jumana Al-Ahmad, is an experienced teacher (Salem College, University of Richmond, University of Virginia) with particular interests in human rights in Arab thought, literature and films; interpretation of the Qur'an; and teaching Arabic as a second language. Feel free to invite guests from the community. No cost for the sessions. A light lunch will be provided (Syrian food this week, with an invitation to contribution to meal costs).
