Knollwood at Worship The Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost Commitment Sunday Sunday, November 11, :55 am To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.
KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Josh Godwin One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Be Thou My Vision... arr. Sandy Mullaney High School Bells THE CHORAL INTROIT The Gift of Love... Hal H. Hopson The Youth Choir [Text may be followed at No. 593 in the hymnal.] THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Josh Godwin One: As our banners announce, we enter this space filled with longing, both immediate and lifelong. All: We long to know God, the Source of all Life, more fully. We long to be known ust as we are. One: We come open to learning God s truth more deeply. All: We want to know and live the ways of Jesus. One: We come asking to become more loving, to receive the Spirit s power to love all of God s children. All: We commit again to living with oy and radical trust, offering all that we are and have to God. ~Dean Clifford THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Josh Godwin *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, as printed on insert We Praise You, O God... KREMSER LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: 1 Kings 17: Roger Grippe One: This is the word of God. Deacon of the Week All: Thanks be to God. * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2
*THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 12: Ted Philpott One: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. *THE HYMN OF DEVOTION, as printed on insert Hope for the World s Despair... RHOSYMEDRE This hymn was composed as part of the Hymns of Peace proect to mark the centenary of Armistice Day and the end of the First World War. We invite the children, grades 1 st through 3 rd to remain in worship with their parents. Children s Worship is on the first and third, fifth Sundays of the month. Worship Care for infants through kindergarten is offered weekly. THE PRAYER FOR PEACE... Lucrecia Norman THE SERMON... Bob Setzer, Jr. YOUR LITTLE BIT MATTERS THE CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION The Sursum Corda... Bob Setzer, Jr. One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts! All: We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise! The Prayer of Confession (Unison) Lord, we are in awe of widows in Your word who show us how to live: One trusting God s provision, even when her larder was empty; Another giving her only coins, trusting in God s abundant care. Forgive us when we place our trust in the wrong things: Assuming possessions will safeguard us from need; Longing for the prestige coming from the approval of others; Seeking visible power, rather than the humility of hidden service. Forgive us for our attempts to protect ourselves from living and giving sacrificially as Jesus did. We confess our failure to give ourselves without reservation. ~Dean Clifford The Words of Institution Sharing the Bread and the Cup We invite the congregation to come forward for communion. While doing so, worshippers are invited to bring their Commitment Cards forward and place them in the baskets at the head of the center aisles. Or if you prefer, Commitment Cards can be placed in the offering plate. Please approach the rail using the two center aisles, and exit down the side aisles. You may kneel or stand as you wish and receive the bread and cup. All wafers are gluten-free. If you prefer to have communion served at your seat, please indicate with a raised hand and a deacon will assist you. Children or others who wish to participate in this shared experience but not receive the bread and uice may cross their arms over their chest and receive a blessing from the minister. 3
The Bread and the Cup Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All... Larry Shackley The Youth Choir Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All, hear me, blest Savior when I call; Hear me, and from Your dwelling place, pour out the riches of Your grace. Jesus, my Lord, I do adore, O help me love You more and more. Jesus, my Lord, I do adore, O help me love You more and more. Jesus, too late for You I ve sought, how can I love You as I ought? And how to praise Your matchless fame, the glorious beauty of Your name? Jesus, what did you find in me, that You have dealt so lovingly? How great the oy that You have brought, so far exceeding hope or thought! Jesus, of You shall be my song, to you my heart and soul belong, All that I have is Yours alone, and You, blest Savior are my own. 5 *THE POSTLUDE We Praise You, O God... arr. John Carter Lauren Winkelman, piano TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. You are invited to the narthex for a brief time of fellowship following worship where you can meet church members and clergy, and learn more about this congregation. We would ask that you record your visit by filling out the friendship pad in the pew; addresses are especially helpful. To learn more about Knollwood Baptist Church, find us online at You can also receive our newsletter and announcements by ing colleen@knollwood.org, or ust call the church office, Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP On the Sundays nearest Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day, our nation s flag is placed in the narthex in gratitude for those whose national service helped ensure the freedoms we enoy as Americans. Today s Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession were written by Knollwood member Dean Clifford. The acolytes are Mason Maguire and Mead Maguire and the crucifer is Matthew Maguire. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Dot Lougee, wife of V.B. Lougee, and mother of Carol (and John) Danforth by her family. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The way is a familiar biblical theme encompassing such truths as the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3), Jesus as the way (John 14:6), and the way as a description of Christian discipleship (Acts 9:2). The words on the banner point to the movements of faith: Longing for God that impels us forward in the spiritual ourney; Learning the way of the Scriptures and the way of Jesus; Loving as our love for God and our neighbors deepens; and Living as we live out of Christian faith and witness in the world. The colors of the banner emphasize green for ordinary time, the period in the church year between Pentecost and Advent. The artist who designed and painted the banners is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month for 1st through 3rd graders. During the second hymn, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk to B244, where their parents will pick up their children after the service. For the 2nd and 4th Sundays children are invited to enoy the worship service with their families. Children s activity bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. THE MUSTARD SEED THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING-MAKING NESTS IN THE SHADE For weeks, we have contemplated the opportunity to sow our mustard seed and grow our seed into the greatest of all shrubs, enabling Knollwood to carry out God s will locally and around the world. Our theme has been: The mustard seed that changes everything. 5
Today is Commitment Sunday the Culmination of our Mustard Seed Campaign. During Communion, we will place these commitment cards at the altar in celebration of God s love and goodness to us. Immediately after worship, at the luncheon in the Wellness and Community Center we will celebrate this special time together and announce our commitments which have been made. Reservations required. Jesus said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grow up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and put forth large branches so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. Mark 4:30-32 SUNDAY, NOV. 11, VETERANS DAY Today is Veterans Day and the 100 th Anniversary of the end of World War I. At the 11 th hour, on the 11 th day of the 11 th month the guns fell silent along what was known then as the Western Front as the Allies and Germany observed the agreement to end the War to End All Wars. Today Knollwood veterans are honored with their photographs on display in the Narthex. American flags are at the interment site of each veteran buried in the Memorial Garden. We would like to recognize all KBC Veterans. This includes all veterans, men and women, past or present.
