Two reflections upon these devastating situations. First, as John instructs in his letter Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action (1John 3:18). So the very first action that springs to mind is to pray. We need to beseech God to help those who grieve, and mourn. We should ask God to give the comfort of the risen Lord to the survivors who have had their lives shattered, and yet still live. We should implore God to provide for their needs both the physical, and spiritual. The second action is to offer financial assistance. We will be taking a retiring offertory to help those in Nepal. Please give, out of the generosity of your hearts, and as you are able. The second reflection pertains to the inherent value, and yet fragility of human life. Human life is intrinsically significant, and we know this because when it is taken, the sting of death is acutely felt - even more so, when human life is taken in the form of an execution squad. And yet, just as human life is sacred to us, it is even more so to God. For God s own son faced execution, at the hands of the powers of his day, and yet willing did so for our sake In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Barbara Ferguson Consecration of our regional bishop 30 May The Archbishop of Sydney invites all members of St Mark's to the consecration of The Revd Peter Robert Lin as a Bishop in the Church of God, and Bishop of Georges River Region in St Andrew's Cathedral on Saturday 30 May 2015 at 10.30am. Former Hon Associate, Fr Andre Jacobs writes: "We had a tree come down across the rectory driveway and snapped the power line to the rectory. So we've been without electricity since Tuesday, but the congregation and archdeacon have been very supportive. Fortunately Ausgrid restored our power this afternoon and we back to normal. The SES will come and remove the tree at some stage. The are still a lot members of our congregation who are without power. The ANZAC Memorial was well attended at the park approximately 325 people; so the Lions club have asked us to plan it with them for next year." Fr Andre, Sunday 26 April 2015 Marks of Mission As visiting preacher on 12 April, The Revd John Deane, Executive Director ABM mentioned the Five Marks of Mission. They have been adopted by many Anglican organisations (such as ABM) as an important statement on mission which expresses the Anglican Communion s common commitment to, and understanding of, God s holistic/integral mission. The Five Marks of Mission are: To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom To teach, baptise and nurture new believers To respond to human need by loving service To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind & pursue peace and reconciliation To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth. More than 2,500 people are dead and many thousands more injured following the devastating earthquake and its many aftershocks which have struck Nepal over the last few days. Act for Peace s partners are already on the ground helping to distribute emergency relief, including food, water, medicine and shelter to people whose lives have been devastated by this terrifying earthquake? It is estimated that 80% of homes near the epicentre have been destroyed. There are not enough hospitals to cope with the number of injured. We have been terrified by the events. There are many makeshift shelters in the streets, as people had to abandon their homes to run to safety. Hospitals continue to be overwhelmed and there is a shortage of supplies, in particular drinking water and shelter material, said Christian Wolff, Regional Program Officer from ACT Alliance partner Dan Church Aid.
