Jesus tells them that they should look for food that has no use-by date, food that lasts forever. Then he tells them that he is the Bread of Life and those who come to him will never hunger or thirst again. Today s question: How can I help others in their spiritual search? Text: Robert McLean, Church to Church Missioner Anglican Board of Mission, 2012 Light a candle All are welcome to light a candle, symbolic of prayer, at the Taizé cross. 1
2 Prayer of the Day Living God, whose Son Jesus fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us with your true and living bread, Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Anglican Communion PRAY for Church of the Province of South East Asia Singapore - (South East Asia)The Rt Revd Dr John Chew Thanksgiving for the life and faith of holy people (Monday) Oswald, King, king & martyr (d.642) In 616 the throne of Northumbria in the north of England was usurped, and Oswald, the rightful heir, fled into Scotland, to the monastic settlement founded by Columba on the island of Iona. Here Oswald encountered the Christian faith and was converted and baptised. The following year, Oswald returned from exile to claim his throne and met his enemies in battle near Hexham. The night before the battle, vastly outnumbered, with a small army of whom not more than a dozen were Christians, he set up a wooden cross, and asked his soldiers to join him in 3
4 prayer. They did so, and promised to be baptised if they won the battle. In the end, Oswald won a victory as complete as it was unlikely. As ruler, Oswald s concern was for the conversion of his people to Christianity, and he sent messengers to Iona, where he had himself received the Gospel, asking for a Christian preacher. The first man sent was tactless and a failure, but his replacement, Aidan, was an outstanding success. Since he did not at first speak the Anglo-Saxon language, Oswald, who was fully bilingual, stood beside him as he preached and interpreted the sermon. Aidan was soon joined by other missionaries, and the Church flourished in Northumbria. (Wednesday) Oswald, King, king & martyr (d.642) In 616 the throne of Northumbria in the north of England was usurped, and Oswald, the rightful heir, fled into Scotland, to the monastic settlement founded by Columba on the island of Iona. Here Oswald encountered the Christian faith and was converted and baptised. The following year, Oswald returned from exile to claim his throne and met his enemies in battle near Hexham. The night before the battle, vastly outnumbered, with a small army of whom not more than a dozen were Christians, he set up a wooden cross, and asked his soldiers to join him in prayer. Dominic, priest & friar (d.1221) Dominic was a Spanish priest. The turning point of his life came in 1206, when he accompanied his bishop on a visit to southern France to convert the Albigenses, a heretical sect who believed that there are two gods (the god of goodness, light, truth, and spirit; and the god of evil, darkness, error, and matter.) Dominic met an innkeeper who was an Albigensian, and engaged him in conversation through the night. By dawn the man wanted to become an orthodox Christian, and from then on Dominic knew that his calling in life was to preach and teach the faith. In 1215 he founded the Order of Preachers, who were to live in poverty, and devote themselves to studying philosophy and theology and combating false doctrine. The order (known as the Dominicans) grew and flourished. One of their most famous members is Thomas Aquinas ( ), a major theologian of the Middle Ages. (Thursday) Mary Sumner, founder of the Mothers Union (d.1921) Mary Sumner, the wife of an Anglican clergyman, formed the Mothers Union in 1876 to help mothers to fulfil their responsibility for the material and spiritual well-being of their children. M.U. continues to be active in 62 countries around the world. (Friday) Laurence, deacon & martyr at Rome (d.258) Laurence was a deacon of the congregation at Rome, in charge of administering the church budget, and the care of the poor. In 257, the emperor Valerian began a persecution aimed chiefly at Christians of the upper classes. All Church property was confiscated and Christian meetings were forbidden. The bishop of Rome and most of his clergy (including Laurence) were executed in 258. The story is told that the Roman prefect, knowing that Laurence was the principal financial officer, promised to set him free if he would surrender the wealth of the Church. Laurence agreed, but said that it would take him three days to gather it. During those three days, he placed the church s money in the hands of trustworthy stewards, and then assembled the sick, the aged, the poor, the widows and orphans of the congregation, presented them to the prefect, saying, These are the treasures of the Church. The enraged prefect ordered him to be roasted alive. Laurence bore the torture with great calmness, saying to his executioners at one time, You may turn me over; I am done on this side. (Saturday) Clare of Assisi, companion of St Francis (d.1252) Clare was the daughter of a wealthy family in Assisi. When she was eighteen years old, she heard a sermon by Francis of Assisi, and was moved to vow herself to a life of poverty. Her family was horrified 4
5 and brought her back home by force; but she escaped and returned to the Franciscans. Francis cut off her hair and placed her in a nearby convent. She was eventually joined by two of her sisters, her widowed mother, and several friends. The sisters of her order came to be known informally as Poor Clares. They devoted themselves to prayer, nursing the sick, and works of mercy for the poor and neglected. The community of Poor Clares continues to this day, both in the Roman and Anglican communions. If you are not already involved and would like to help in some way.please contact Lorraine Sweeny on Wontulp-Bi-Buya College Last Tuesday, I was fortunate to visit this College in Cairns, and to meet with Principal Fr Victor Joseph an Anglican priest from Torres Strait. The college, originally an off-shoot from Nungalinya College (Darwin), is an Ecumenical initiative specifically for indigenous Australians. It currently has about 75 students enrolled in mainly certificate courses of Theology & Ministry, and Addictions Management & Community Development. These courses prepare students for working in their own communities, and also serve as bridging courses for further theological training in their own denomination. The management committee of the college comprises Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran and Uniting Church representatives from Queensland. As with many organisations, a key need is ongoing funding. Until recently many of the teaching staff were part-time on a voluntary basis. Wontulp-Bi-Buya College is one of the three Anglican Board of Mission projects that St Mark's is supporting this year.
