Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen. Martin Luther wrote these words in response by the direction of Pope Leo X to recant the 95 theses nailed to the church door in Wittenberg. It is in these origins that the term protestant arose. For it was the original protest about the understanding of the authority of Scripture, Jesus death and the salvation that is obtained by faith alone, which Martin Luther protested. We are joined, historically, in this protest through the creation of the Church of England. However, sadly today the notion of protest has been thoroughly used and abused. Far more likely is the Shakespearean usage of the term in Hamlet the lady doth protest too much, me thinks. That is, nowadays, those who protest most loudly are probably those most likely to be hiding the truth (eg the turgid saga of Harvey Weinstein). As we celebrate the contribution of Martin Luther to the life of the church, we are reminded of the original protestation of the Apostle Paul But we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The previous Sunday we welcomed Valentino Scott Harriton, who was baptised. Receiving Communion All who seek God's mercy are welcome to receive the holy communion at St Mark's. Both normal and glutenfree wafers are available; as is wine from the common chalice and grape juice from individual cups. If you find it difficult to come to the chancel, communion can be brought to you in the pew. If you do not wish to receive, you are welcome to come to the communion rail for a blessing cross your arms on your chest. It requires that all people working in ministry to children and youth undertake training every three years. It is also beneficial for those involved in ministry to other vulnerable people. Refresher courses can now be completed online. Season of Creation From Anglican Communion News Service: Anglicans around the world have taken part in a wide variety of events to mark this year s Season of Creation, an ecumenical focus on the environment that runs from 1 September to 4 October. The Season of Creation was originally proposed by the Ecumenical Patriarch to run from the Orthodox Church s World Day of Prayer for Creation and ending on the Feast of St Francis (4 Oct). The idea was endorsed by the Anglican Consultative Council meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2012; and backed by Pope Francis in Rather than the whole month, in recent years St Mark's has observed Creation on the October long weekend, concluding with the Art Show and Pet Service (with blessing of animals). 5 Reformation Sunday 29 Oct 2017 Today we recall the life and witness of Martin Luther, German theologian, poet, composer, priest and monk it was 500 years ago that he nailed his famous 95 theses to the door of All Saints Church, Wittenberg. Today's Collect and New Testament reading are those set for a Teacher and Theologian. The Old Testament and Gospel are those for Pentecost 21. Sentence If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John Prayer of the Day Almighty God, who gave your servant Martin Luther special gifts of grace to understand and teach the truth in Christ Jesus: grant that, enlightened by this teaching, we may know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Second reading 1 Cor A reading from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumblingblock to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God 5

7 Repenting Let us repent that our disunity has led us to formulate stereotypes and prejudices about each other s traditions; Let us repent that our disunity has diverted us from witnessing together to the mercy of God; Let us repent that our disunity has hindered our proclamation of the Gospel and impeded our service to the world. One: Lord, have mercy. All: Christ, have mercy. Reconciling Let us be reconciled in Christ who calls us to be one in God; Let us be reconciled in Christ who is one with the Father; Let us be reconciled in Christ whose work of atonement blesses us with fellowship that exceeds division, and communion that embraces diversity.
