6 PASTORAL LETTER Pentecost 2013 Why do we do, what we do? Why do we say, what we say? They are questions I am often asked, and not always by those who may be relatively new to the Christian faith or new to the Anglican way. Why do we use the same corporate (that is, said together ) prayers most Sundays? Why does the colour of the vestments worn by the clergy change? What is the significance of standing for the Gospel reading, but not the other readings? I m sure there are many other questions that might be, and have been, asked, by worshippers, young and old, and new and not so new. On Sunday, 2 nd June, I hope these, and many others, questions, might be answered, in some way, during the course of the Sunday morning services of worship that day, as we observe the Feast Day of Corpus Christi (Latin for the body of Christ ). In centuries past, Corpus Christi was a major festival of the Church, accompanied by lavish processions through towns and villages. I do not propose to replicate this, nor the sometimes superstitious and somewhat magical sacramentalism that often accompanied these occasions. What I do intend to do is to use Corpus Christi as an occasion on which to communicate the purpose and the meaning of the different elements of the Anglican Prayer Book service. For this reason the liturgy (or order of service ) for Sunday June 2 nd will be different to that which we are used to not in terms of its content, but in its structure. Let me explain On Sunday 2 nd June we will follow the Order of Service for Holy Communion (or the Eucharist), as we do every Sunday, and we will hear and say the prayers, and other parts of the service, that we are well used to hearing and saying together Sunday by Sunday. What will be different is this. Instead of a Sermon, and instead of the Intercessions, each element of the service will be accompanied by an explanation of its meaning and significance. In essence, I will be providing a sort of running commentary on the different elements of the liturgy (or order of service ) throughout the course of the service. Because, however, the Great Thanksgiving (or the Communion Prayer ) is a single prayer, this will be accompanied by printed notes, rather than a verbal explanation.

7 This is all intended to enrich our experience of the Prayer Book, and enhance our experience of public worship. I hope that many questions will be answered in an informative and engaging way on this Sunday, and that the conversation may continue afterwards! The Venerable Dr Bradly S Billings The Vicar

8 Messy Church All welcome Buxton Hall First Sunday every month 4-6pm Messy Church has started the year really well. In March there were new families from the Kinder and the local area and everyone joined in the excitement and fun. April saw us tell the story of Mark 2. The young people all painted part of the skit, and/or alternatively made cards for people they knew who may need cheering up or were ill. Some who came did not know anyone and were kind enough to make cards for those in our parish who were unwell. Thanks to Hillary for delivering our cards. We are growing in numbers which is fantastic and hopefully is all in God s great plan to help us reach a wider community. Saint John s has so many committed people who are strong in their Christian faith and I am asking for your assistance. As we grow there are more people of all ages coming with their children, grandchildren and neighbours. To ensure the success of everyone attending and the Word of the Lord being heard we are looking for those who can assist us with delivering this very unique outreach of Gods spirit at Messy Church. If you can spare 3 hours once a month or even just every now and then, to come and help us at Messy Church, can you please see Nicky Jacob. We are looking for people who can assist with meeting new people, being involved in making the actual craft or activities with everyone or alternatively behind the scenes. Can you help set up? Getting to the Hall around 3.15pm and helping set up tables, prepare food and set up. Can you help clean up? After the dinner at 6pm there are always dishes to wash, toys to be placed away and people to chat to and ensure they feel welcomed and will come again. Clean up takes around 30 minutes from pm. We have a strong team currently however, as the congregation grows the work will become (hopefully) a lot more and we will need some help! if you can help out any month by assisting with the cooking, cleaning or set up please talk to Nicky or Brad. Nicky nicolejacob224@gmail.com or call me on just to chat, even if you are thinking about being involved.

9 We now have musical instruments, a guitar player and a vicar who gives a great small service with a genuine message for young children and people of all ages. Please come along to the next Messy Church and see for yourself how Jesus is working in our church. Sunday 2 nd June - Joseph and his beautiful coat Painting Helmets, paper patch quilting Josephs new coats and learning family loyalty Messy Church is well messy! So we strongly encourage everyone to wear some play clothes that are allowed to get a little messy on them even though it will all wash off.eventually!
