However, Christian experience finds his words to be true. It is Jesus who sustains the Church through the Eucharist, the sharing of his Body and Blood. Jesus gives us food for the journey. Today s question: How can I attend the Eucharist more regularly to be enriched by God through word and sacrament? The Anglican Communion PRAY for The Church of South India (United) Karnataka Central - (South India)The Rt Revd Suputhrappa Vasantha Kumar Thanksgiving for the life and faith of holy people (Monday) Jeremy Taylor, bishop & spiritual writer (d.1667) In the years between 1633 and the ascendancy of the Puritans in 1645, Jeremy Taylor was a Fellow of two Cambridge colleges and chaplain to Archbishop Laud and to King Charles. Under Puritan rule, he was imprisoned three times, and forced into retirement in Wales. After the Restoration, in 1661, he became Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland. Among his many books on theological, moral, and devotional subjects, the best known are The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living (1650) and The Rule and Exercises of Holy Dying (1651). Many readers, including Charles Wesley a century later, have reported finding these books of great spiritual benefit. 3

4 (Tuesday) Twentieth Century Martyrs, including: Maximilien Kolbe, Franciscan priest killed in Auswitz (d.1940) Maria Skobtsova, Russian abbess and spiritual leader (d.1945) Martin Luther King Jr., worker for civil liberties in the USA (d.1968) (Wednesday) Mary, Mother of our Lord The honour paid to Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus Christ our Lord, goes back to the earliest days of the Christian Church. The New Testament records several incidents from Mary s life: her betrothal to Joseph, the Annunciation by the angel Gabriel that she was to bear the Messiah, her Visitation to Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, the Nativity of our Lord, the visits of the shepherds and the magi, the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple at forty days old, their flight into Egypt, the Passover visit to the Temple when Jesus was twelve, the wedding at Cana in Galilee, her presence at the foot of the Cross, and later with the apostles in the upper room after the Ascension. Mary is always closely associated with the life of her Son. We do well to heed her message, as given to the servants at the wedding feast: Listen to my Son. Do what he tells you. In Orthodox icons, Mary is usually pictured pointing to her Son, Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. News & Events Book of Common Prayer Next Sunday we shall commemorate the 350th anniversary of the authorisation of the Book of Common Prayer in May 1662 and the start of its authorised use in August Dr Douglas Golding will preach at both services. Similar commemorations are being held throughout the English-speaking world. For some, these are in effect, funeral services, because the BCP is dead and buried (if not cremated!); for others it is a joyful remembrance of the majestic language of the 16th and 17th centuries, which also gave us the poetry of Shakespeare and the majesty of the King James Bible, but now seems quaintly old-fashioned for some, and, for others, infused by an outdated theology. As we anticipate these services, we might call to mind some of the Prayer Book phrases which have become part of our own faith experience. Enquiries Bruce Cooke Ph cookeb@optusnet.com.au Wontulp-Bi-Buya College Last week, I was fortunate to visit this College in Cairns, and to meet with Principal Fr Victor Joseph an Anglican priest from Torres Strait. The college, originally an off-shoot from Nungalinya College (Darwin), is an Ecumenical initiative specifically for indigenous Australians. It currently has about 75 students enrolled in mainly certificate courses of Theology & Ministry, and Addictions Management & Community Development. These courses prepare students for working in their own communities, and also serve as bridging courses for further theological training in their own denomination. The management committee of the college comprises Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran and Uniting Church representatives from Queensland. As with many organisations, a key need is ongoing funding. Until recently many of the teaching staff were part-time on a voluntary basis. Wontulp-Bi-Buya College is one of the three Anglican Board of Mission projects that St Mark's is supporting this year. 6 Winter Music Series 2012 Thank you to all who contributed, supported and attended the three concerts of this year's Winter Series.
