Today A very warm Welcome to all who are worshipping with us especially if you are visiting Napier or at the Cathedral for the first time you are invited to join us for morning tea (or coffee!) served at the back of the Cathedral following the 10am service. Advent Sunday - 27 November Today marks the start of a new liturgical year - the Advent season is the four Sundays prior to Christmas, a time when we focus on the Christian World Service s Christmas Gift Appeal. Each week in Advent, members of the Cathedral EJP Network will highlight the CWS Christmas Appeal by leading our Advent wreath candle lighting ceremony. CWS is the recognised overseas aid and development agency of our church and diocese and the Christmas Appeal is our annual opportunity to support its work. Please be generous. Appeal envelopes are now available on the back table. Through all of the South Sudan s troubles the Maridi Service Agency has focused on giving young people opportunities through education, protection and empowerment. MSA has welcomed former child soldiers and women raped in war, helping them secure a livelihood. People displaced by conflict in other parts of the country have been resettled through their work and encouragement. TONIGHT 8.00pm, a service of Advent Carols and Readings with Bishop Andrew Hedge. Advent Word An opportunity to connect with others as we reflect and pray through Advent - the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (an Anglican order of monks), invite our participation in a programme called AdventWord, the Anglican Communion s global Advent calendar. The calendar is created by Christians around the world sending in images in response to an Advent meditation. To participate go on-line to AdventWord.org and signup to receive a daily from the Brothers of SSJE. The will contain a daily word and meditation, accompanied by a stunning image. You are invited to respond with an image of your own on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook or you can just watch the calendar grow each day in Advent. When you sign up you will receive easy instructions on how to send in images and view the Advent Calendar. Read more about AdventWord on-line: ; or THANKS to everyone who supported, or was involved with, the White Ribbon Day Civic Service in the Cathedral last Friday when the City said Thanks to those organisations and volunteers who make our city safe. 2

Today s Order of Service This morning s service follows the Eucharistic Liturgy Thanksgiving of the People of God commencing on page 404 in the red New Zealand Anglican Prayer Book; the hymns are from Common Praise, the blue hymn book in the pews; and the musical setting is Curtis (PoG) Presider: Priest Assistant: Liturgist: Rev d David van Oeveren Rev d Margaret Thompson Elisabeth Paterson Processional Hymn: 24 - Come, thou long-expected Jesus Call to Worship: We wait here expectantly, eager to enter into this new church year. We gather with hope into the presence of God. There is much anticipation about what is ahead for us. We look to God to lead and guide us. The waiting is not easy. We ask God to give us patience and endurance. Our dreams are filled with hope and excitement. Let us worship God. Advent Wreath Candle-lighting: God of Advent, you call us to prepare for your revelation of love. As we worship you and work with one another to bring hope to your world, may we always be open to your calling for us. An Environment-Justice-Peace Network member shares a Christian World Service Christmas Gift Appeal partner story - this week, Giving Hope to young people in the South Sudan Lighting the Advent Candle of Hope The first Advent candle represents our call to hope. When we light it we look forward to something special. We anticipate the coming of Christ. We gather feeling hopeful for the change that Christ brings and we wait with excitement. This candle reminds us that the prophets longed for God s presence. This candle reminds us that the people of the early church longed for God s presence too. This candle is a symbol of our own longing for God s presence, as we wait in hope for God to break anew into our lives. 3

May the God of Hope be present with us. May Christ the light of the world inspire us to worship, May the Spirit of new life fill us and lead us, so that we might give hope to the world. Prayer of Approach: God calls us to this place You call us, O God, to rest in your Holy presence; You call us to be aware of those around us who are suffering; It is hard to do this when our lives are so full preparing for summer holidays. You call us to give hope to the world; And yet we are struggling at times to find hope ourselves. You call us to forgive and offer love But it is easier to critique and condemn. Forgive us, O God, when we do not rest, when we struggle to offer hope, forgiveness and love, and where those who suffer in our world continue to do so through lack of our actions. Assurance: Sentence: Collect: God forgives us. God offers us hope. Know that we are forgiven and be at peace. Thanks be to God. Amen Stand up and raise your heads; your redemption is drawing near. Luke 21: 28b Almighty God, you give us this season to make ourselves ready for the coming of your Son. In this time of waiting and hoping, assist us to order our lives so that we may be ready to welcome Jesus in the flesh. We ask this through him whose coming draws near, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Reading: Isaiah 2: 1-5 Basil Brooker Psalm: 122 (NZPB page 351) Choir Reading: Romans 13: Alison Thomson 4

Gradual Hymn: Come now Lord Jesus AA23 - Shirley Murray 1 Come now, Lord Jesus, enter our Christmas, be to us no stranger in this new-made manger. 3 Come, cold and crying, comfort denying, no place to receive you, few yet to believe you. 2 Come, small and human, born of a woman, yet a Son much greater of our own Creator. 4 Come poor and simple, our flesh your temple, in your body feeling hurt as well as healing. 5 Come gift and token, bread to be broken - star and sign still point you, myrrh will yet anoint you. Gospel Reading: Matthew 24: Rev d Margaret Thompson The Sermon Rev d David van Oeveren The Prayers: 410 The Affirmation of Faith - the Nicene Creed led by Rev d Margaret Thompson Jesus, in your mercy - Hear our prayer. 418 The Lord s Prayer 419 The Peace We greet the people near us, saying Peace be with you. Offertory Hymn: 37 - The Lord will come and not be slow During this hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money that support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also. The Preparation of the Gifts Most gracious God, source of all blessing, we offer our gifts so that together we can bring hope to our world through word and action. Amen. 5

420 The Great Thanksgiving 427 The Invitation The Choir sing the Agnus Dei as the assistants receive communion, then move to the altar rails to receive communion; then all are welcome to share the bread and wine of Christ s life, or to receive a blessing - please come forward via the centre aisle and then return to your seats via the side aisles. Please advise an usher if you need to have communion served in your seat. During communion, the Choir will sing: King Jesus hath a garden Prayer after communion The Blessing: Rev d David van Oeveren We share notices and news Recessional Hymn: 31 - Lo, he comes with clouds descending The Dismissal: Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. Amen. We go in the name of Christ. Thank you for joining us for worship - the service concludes with the organ voluntary, for which the congregation is welcome to remain seated. If you wish to leave following the recession of clergy and choir and dismissal, please do so quietly so as not to disturb those who remain. As the voluntary is part of our worship, applause is not considered appropriate. After the service, all are welcome to share morning tea at the back of the Cathedral. CONGRATULATIONS to the Rev d Dorothy Brooker who celebrated 30 years of priestly ministry last Wednesday 23 November; and to the Rev d Louise Anderson ordained priest yesterday at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland. (Louise was formerly a parishioner at All Saints Taradale) IN MEMORIAM We were saddened to receive the news this week of the deaths of the Rev d Geoff Harding, formerly Minister at Clive-Haumoana Co-operating Church; & Richard Coates, a long-time servant of Gisborne Parish, Waiapu Diocese and Te Pihopatanga ki te Tairawhiti.
