3 Aled Jones in concert St Paul s Cathedral, 7.00pm Thursday 4 October. Brochures are now available in the Narthex. The concert will be approximately 75 minutes in duration with no interval. Aled will be signing albums for 30 minutes after each concert. Tickets start at $53.50 concession and $58.75 full price for general admission only. 6 God Loves A Cheerful Giver Mark Our Stewardship text for today is, Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Do you pray as you give your offering each week? We can pray that God will use our gift to bring love and care to someone this week. We can pray that God will use our gift to spread the Christian faith to an inquisitive child in our Sunday School, or a whole village of people in Asia or Africa. We can even pray for ourselves that as we let go of the money in our envelope, God will loosen the painful grip that the consumer society has on us. These are all good offering prayers. As we ask for these things, we truly can believe that we ve received them. So let s pray as we give, and give as we pray; and the Holy Spirit will surely increase our faith, increase our prayer, and increase our giving too. 7 The Rector Writes No, no, no and, yes, yes, yes Today s reading reminded me very much of little Scarlett. It is amazing how early children learn the word no and Scarlett has seemingly perfected it of late. I ask her if she is ready for a nigh nigh (baby talk for a sleep) and she immediately says no. With her growing awareness of allowable and not allowable behaviour she looks at the oven and says no, no, no, hot or, scribbles with chalk on her gumboot and says no, no, no. The manner in which she says is very much like Jim Trott off The Vicar of Dibley who is renown, for his no, no, no, yes. Over the past few weeks we have weaved our way through the Apostle Paul s letter to the Church at Ephesus. In the first half of the letter Paul outlines all God has done for us. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing, made us His children In Christ and brought us into His family. In the second part of his letter Paul then urges us to live a life worthy of our calling. In a sense he says our lives ought to reflect our relationship with God. Our lives ought to match the confession of our lips that we belong to God and are in fact His beloved children. And so, Paul gives us a list of things to say no to. Say no to anger fuelled behaviour, say no to foolish living, say no to greed, say no to nasty talk, say no to drunkenness etc. And, of course, there is the say yes to category. Say yes to wise living, say yes to living in the light, say yes to sharing, say yes to loving one another, say yes to giving thanks to God (count your blessings), say yes to singing praises to God and much more. As I reflect on this however, I am mindful that it is much easier to write a list of do s and don ts than it is to live the list. As Paul says in Romans the things I don t want to do I find myself doing, and the things I do want to do, I find myself not doing (Romans 7:15). It is a common human predicament that I am sure we can all relate to. Thank God however, there is help. We are not left on our own to struggle through. God has provided well for us. Again, we hear Paul in today s reading say But be filled with the Spirit. In Christ we have access to the same power that rose Jesus from the dead through the Holy Spirit. This is a great resource, a great help for us. Through the power of God s Spirit, we can live the lives we are called to live. Not by might, not by power but by my Spirit says the Lord (Zec 4:6). I don t know about you, but I know I need to be filled with God s Spirit daily to enable me to live wisely as Paul instructs us today. Only then perhaps can we keep our no s no and our yesses yes instead of reverting to no, no, no, yes. Blessings Tracey
