1 St Mark's Anglican Church South Hurstville We at St Mark's aim to grow in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and to welcome others into an open Christian community where we can experience and explore the reality of God in an atmosphere of acceptance and trust. 27 May 2012 Pentecost 8.00am Choral Eucharist Liturgy Holy Communion Connections, Prayer Book p 122 Presider Revd Andre Jacobs Preacher: Revd David Warner Setting Dudman Intercessor: Wesley Fairhall Readings Ezekiel Patrick Russell Psalm Responsorial TiS 65 Acts Barbara Ferguson John Lay Assistant Introit Come, ever blessed Spirit Hymns: 411, 396, 469, 414 Anthem Carter: Holy Spirit, truth divine; Rutter: I will sing with the spirit 9.20am Prayer Circle Intercessions at the Taizé prayer station 10.00am Family Communion Liturgy Special booklet Officiant: Barbara Booth Presider Revd David Warner Preacher: Revd David Warner Readings Ezekiel Chris Nillsen John Lay Assistant Hymns 409, Walk in the Light, 658, 414 Reflection The Spirit of God is given to us as a gift. On Pentecost Sunday the Church celebrates with great enthusiasm the outpouring of the Spirit on everyone and then sometimes fails to embrace the working of the Spirit in the lives of each of its members. Pentecost is a time to affirm the gifts given to each person and encourage each person to use their gifts, confident that the spirit who gives the gifts will also give the necessary guidance in their use. But what is the work of the Spirit? The Holy Spirit comes to convince us of the truth of Jesus and enable us to bear witness to that same truth. The Spirit comes to bear witness to the unity of the Father and Son and draw us into that same living, loving unity as we minister and serve in Jesus name. Text: The Revd Loy Thompson, Diocese of Newcastle ABM

2 Light a candle All are welcome to light a candle, symbolic of prayer, at the Taizé cross. Pentecost Gathering Greeting The Lord be with you. And also with you. Christ is risen. Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia! Welcome Assistant continues 'A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you,' says the Lord God; 'I will put my spirit within you and you shall live.' Lord, you sent your Spirit to live within us. Your Spirit leads us into all truth. Lord, your Spirit teaches us to serve others. Your Spirit equips us with gifts to do so. Lord, your Spirit guides us into righteousness. Your Spirit encourages us to be like Christ. Lord, your Spirit casts out all fear. Your Spirit counsels us in love, hope and inspiration. Bless the Lord, O my soul. And all that is within me, bless his holy name. Hymn TiS Filled with the Spirit's power, with one accord the infant church confessed its risen Lord: a Holy Spirit, in the church today no less your power of fellowship display. 2. Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire, that unity may be our great desire: give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call, and readiness in each to work for all. 3. Widen our love, good Spirit, to embrace in your strong care all those of every race: like wind and fire with life among us move till we are known as Christ's, and Christians prove. 2

3 Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your Church: open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love, joy, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Let us pray that the breath of the Spirit will renew and refresh the efforts of all who work for the growth and fulfilment of God s Kingdom. Give thanks for those who listen for the Spirit s voice and respond without apprehension or delay. Thanksgiving for the life and faith of holy people (Friday) Justin, Martyr at Rome (d.165) Justin was born of pagan Greek parents around 100AD in Samaria (between Galilee and Judea). He was well educated in rhetoric, poetry, and history, and studied philosophy in Alexandria and Ephesus. While at Ephesus, he was impressed by the steadfastness of Christian martyrs, and by the personality of an aged Christian man whom he met by chance while walking on the seashore. This man spoke to him about Jesus as the fulfilment of the promises made through the Jewish prophets. Justin was overwhelmed. A flame was kindled in my soul, he writes, and a love of the prophets and those who are friends of Christ possessed me. Justin became a Christian, but he continued to teach philosophy. He saw pagan philosophy, especially Platonism, as a partial grasp of the truth, which can serve as a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. He engaged in religious debates, and opened a school of Christian philosophy at Rome. There he was arrested on the charge of practising an unauthorized religion. He was tried before the Roman prefect, refused to renounce his faith in Christ, and was put to death by beheading along with six of his students. News & Events Friday@Home All welcome to the next Friday@Home 1 June at the home of Shirley and John Lucke, 12 Phillip Street, Blakehurst ( ) from 7.30pm. Thank you to St Mark's Socialites and all the others who provided the wonderful range of soups and other goodies for the Ecumenical Volunteers Thanksgiving last Sunday.... to St Mark s property clean-up team for the wonderful work done last Saturday morning. The garden looked fantastic for the Volunteers Thanksgiving. The next clean up is on the 23 June.... to John Lucke and Alan Little for installing the new facilities as part of the upgrade to the toilets in the hall. This project was part of the Parish s commitment to receiving the Community Building Partnerships grant last year which resulted in the installation of the air conditioning and new kitchen in the hall. 4

5 ABM invitation You are cordially invited to a social function at ABM following the conclusion of the Associates Annual General Meeting Thursday 7 June 2012 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm Anglican Board of Mission Boardroom Level 6, 51 Druitt Street, Sydney RSVP Denise Wilson (02) info@abm.asn.au Property Stewardship Our application for funding under the 2011 Community Building Program Grant (NSW Government Initiative) for the replacement of the hall roof was unsuccessful due to high level of applications. Parish Council continues to ensure regular maintenance of all 3 properties from within our annual budget. There are however projects that we need to consider which can only proceed as and when funds become available. There are 5 major projects currently in this category needing action: 1. Replacement of the hall roof estimated at $35,000; 2. Pew cushions, kneelers and reupholster of church furniture estimated at $12,000; 3. Continue with the upgrade of church lighting estimated at $8,000; 4. Painting, tiling and new carpet to the Rectory conservative estimate at $16,000; 5. A 1.5kw Solar system to rectory and church at $2,500 for each building; - expenditure approved by Parish Council; Several parishioners have already indicated a willingness to contribute to new pew cushions and quotes for this work are currently being reviewed ( about $350 to $400 per pew). Should you wish to consider financially supporting any of these projects, over and above your regular giving, this would be greatly appreciated and can be placed in a marked envelope and it will be allocated against your chosen project. Parish Council The Little s are going to England Lois and Alan are going to England for a most important event. During June, Alex is being married in the Old London Town Hall in Marylebone. While we are away, St Mark s will have two guest organists at the 8am Choral Eucharist: Maria Cameron and David Drury. Maria will be playing on Sundays 3, 10 June and David on 17, 24 June. Thanks must go to Gracie Kennedy who has kindly agreed to play at the 10am services while Lois is away. (02) Bookbusters Review The Wizard of Id is a cartoon strip syndicated in the Sydney Morning Herald featuring the comically loathsome King of Id, often pilloried in graffiti as The King is a Fink. fink: (n; vulg.) one who is reviled or held in contempt. While fink has nothing to do with The Finkler Question by Howard Jacobson, some of the BookBusters may have wished to apply fink if not to the novel, then perhaps to the main character, Julian Treslove and to a lesser degree his friend and rival Sam Finkler. Winner of the 2010 Man Booker prize and promoted as a comic novel (and from an academic literary point of view it does fill most of the criteria for being such), it did however divide the BookBusters. Some thought it so unfunny that they couldn t finish the novel and even eschewed discussion of it. Although enthusiastic supporters were in a minority, the discussion was robust and, as usual for BookBusters, interesting and informative responses were aired. Other BookBusters were delighted by the novel and enjoyed many laugh-out-loud moments as they read. Fay Sprague ably led off the discussion with a detailed biography clarifying important elements in Howard Jacobson s writing. Foremost was the autobiographical influence in the creation of his characters and his humorous and discursive style. The Jewish experience and male-female relations are strong features of all his novels. The Finkler Question elicited the comment from some that the novel, if not openly misogynistic, may have appealed more to a male than a female readership. On the other hand, the writing was excellent and others found the humour to be typically Jewish by which one means ironic, politically incorrect, and hilarious, but with the occasional black sting in the tail of the joke. Some saw a subtle thread of despair running beneath the humour. Just as faith (for some) can be likened to a coin with belief on one side and doubt on the other, so humour often has a dark underbelly. The more serious Israeli-Palestinian question was an important element of the novel and this was skilfully balanced against the many comic incidents and mistakenperception-based jokes throughout the novel, which stimulated the sharing of a few BookBuster s favourite Jewish jokes before the meeting ended in laughter.
