St Mark's Anglican Church South Hurstville We at St Mark's aim to grow in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and to welcome others into an open Christian community where we can experience and explore the reality of God in an atmosphere of acceptance and trust. 3 March 2013 Third Sunday in Lent 8.00am Choral Eucharist Liturgy Holy Communion (Prayer Bk p 119) Presider Revd Andre Jacobs Preacher Revd Barry Dudding Intercessor Barbara Falloon Readings Isaiah Betty Dayes Psalm Anglican chant Ephesians Pauline Burdon Luke Assistant Introit: Bread of Heaven Anthem Thy Perfect Love: Rutter Hymns 684 (v1,2); 464; 446 (T 772); 530 Setting Dudman 9.30am Prayer Circle Intercessions at the Taizé cross 10.00am Family Communion & Sunday Club Liturgy Holy Communion (red booklet) Presider Revd Barry Dudding Preacher Revd Barry Dudding Intercessor Bruce Woodhouse Readings Ephesians Eric Plumer Luke Assistant Hymns Processional 449; Children's 658 (v1,2) ; Offertory 254; Dismissal 684 Reflection Some Pharisees want to protect Jesus from Herod that fox. Jesus with great emotion, and despite this threat, expresses his deep desire to gather all of Jerusalem together even though they are not willing. However, the work of Jesus must continue. Today s question: Where am I on my way to? The Revd Matthew Smedley, Priest Associate, Holy Trinity, Dubbo Anglican Board of Mission, 2012 Welcome again to David Alexander as visiting organist at the 8am Eucharist. Morning tea All welcome to morning tea in St Mark's Hall after each service. 1

Light a candle All are welcome to light a candle, symbolic of prayer, at the Taizé cross. Acknowledgement We acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which we stand, the Bidiagal people of the Eora nation. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present and commit ourselves to building more just ways of living together. Penitential gathering The Lord be with you And also with you Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins whose mercy ensures for ever. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie Eleison and Trisagion (said) Assistant Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. Confession Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled and wandered far off. Pause for reflection Let us then ask for mercy, confessing our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do; we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Absolution Presider Hymn 684 (verse 1 & 2) Love will be our Lenten calling 2

Prayer of the Day O God, the fountain of life, to a humanity parched with thirst you offer the living water that springs from the Rock our Saviour Jesus Christ: stir up within your people the gift of your Spirit, that we may profess our faith with freshness and announce with joy the wonder of your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one.god for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer for a rector Before the blessing Bountiful God, grant to St Mark's a faithful pastor and teacher who will speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will empower your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil your calling. Amen Tues Pss 15; 16 Luke 15;11-32 Wed Ps 18:1-31 Luke 16:1-13 Thur Ps 19 Luke 16:14-31 Fri Pss 20: 21:1-7 Luke 17:1-19 Sat Pss 22:1-22 Luke Prayer of the season from Ash Wednesday Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made, and you forgive the sins of all who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthy lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Anglican Communion Pray for Matlosane (formerly Klerksdorp) - (Southern Africa) Rt Revd Stephen Diseko Thanksgiving for the life and faith of holy people (Thursday) Perpetua & her companions, martyrs at Carthage (d.203) Perpetua was only twenty-two, possibly recently widowed, and nursing a baby, when she and a small group of Christians were sent to the wild animals in the arena at Carthage. They had been arrested for refusing to sacrifice to the Roman gods. Perpetua was a catechumen (ie. a convert but not yet baptized) but her faith was such that she willingly submitted to martyrdom. 4

(Friday) John of God, pioneer health worker in Spain (d.1550) John lived a very dissolute life until the age of forty, when he was converted to Christ. Upon his conversion he began to acknowledge his sinfulness in public. On one occasion he appeared so disturbed that he was locked in an asylum. He found his true ministry in caring for the poor and sick, and his compassion, humility and self-denial attracted others to this vocation. When some people complained about John sheltering tramps and women of bad character, he replied, I do confess that I know of no bad person in this hospital except myself. News & Events Annual Parish Meeting Notice is given that the annual general meeting of St Mark's Anglican Church South Hurstville will be held on Sunday 17 March 2013 at 11.30am in St Mark's Hall. Plan to be there to review the year past and elect the new Council to take us forward. Consider nominating for warden or parish councillor nomination forms in narthex. Financial Statements for 2012 will also be available in the narthex. Taizé Prayer@St Mark's The next gathering, with a Lenten focus, will be held on Monday 11 March at 7.30pm. All invited to this less-than-an-hour time of song, readings and prayer in the spirit of Taizé. Bruce Cooke Lent 2013 Consider additional worship, prayer and/or study during this Lent in order to energise our inward journey of faith, more able to respond to outward ministry opportunities in the year ahead: Monday 11 March 7.30pm Mondays 8.00pm Thursdays 5.00pm Sundays 5.00pm Taizé Prayer@St Mark's Bible Study Christian Meditation Lenten study and meal Memorial Book in narthex Men and women who saw active service post Korean war Wilf Ewens is still looking for names to update the memorial book in the narthex by including those who have served in theatres of war since the Korean war: Malaysian Incursion, Desert Storm, Borneo the Balkans, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. If a relative, friend or you know of anybody who served in a war zone since the Korean War please give details name, arm of the services, war zone to Wilf Ewens ewenssnr@gmail.com or leave a note in the box in the narthex. St Marks Knitters Our busy knitters have just delivered another BIG bundle of little outfits for the new born in Africa. There is a constant, ongoing need for these baby clothes for the AIDS babies so that they may be sent home with bright and useful clothes, rather than being wrapped in rags or news papers as is so often the case. So - well done knitters. Gabrielle Merten 5

Lenten giving As part of your Lenten journey, give extra to support one of St Mark's missions, the Anglican Board of Missions. Use the special envelopes available in the narthex. Your gift will support one of these three initiatives: 1. Australia: Support Aboriginal students studying at Nungalinya College in Darwin. The college provides courses in theology, family and community services and encourages cross cultural awareness. 2. Papua New Guinea: Help the Melanesian Brothers in Port Moresby to spread the gospel through their musical performances. The Brothers work in a challenging urban environment and this project will enable them to share the Good News with people. 3. The Philippines: Provide much needed clean water and sanitation to poor, rural communities. This integrated program not only improves health but also reduces poverty and increases living standards. BCA Boxes March is the month for opening the Bush Church Aid money boxes. If you have a box would you please give to Lorraine Sweeny or leave it in the narthex.
