It was a lack of understanding (at the time) that their calling to be disciples was not about personal glorification and benefits but rather to enable others to experience God s abounding love for them and for the world, to share in the servant-leader ministry that calls for humility and service. Thanksgiving for the life and faith of holy people (Tuesday) James of Jerusalem, brother of our Lord & martyr (d.62) James of Jerusalem is referred to in the New Testament as the brother of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He was for many years the leader of the Christian congregation in Jerusalem, and is generally supposed to be the author of the Epistle of James. Outside the New Testament, James is mentioned by the Jewish historian Josephus, who calls him the brother of Jesus the so-called Christ, and reports that he was highly respected even by the Pharisees for his piety and strict observance of the Law, but that his enemies took advantage of an interval between Roman governors in 62 AD to have him put to death. Numerous references in early Christian documents show the esteem in which he was held in the early Church. News & Events Katoke Trust Dinner You are warmly invited to join me for the annual dinner of the Katoke Trust to be held on Friday, 9 November, from pm at Tradies, 57 Manchester Road North, Gymea. The dinner offers you the opportunity for a relaxing, entertaining and informative evening, celebrating the wonderful way in which Australians are reaching out to the people of Lweru Diocese in Tanzania. 5 Looking forward to Advent, Christmas and Epiphany A reminder to all who have signed up to attend that this series of studies it commences tomorrow night, Monday 22 October at 8.00 pm Pauline & Glenn Burdon's home. Sydney Labyrinth a spiritual path for Centennial Park Some St Mark's members have walked labyrinths before as walking meditations: Grace Cathedral San Francisco, Iona Scotland, St Mark's Hall (c/o Kerith & Anne), and many other locations around the world. A labyrinth is now being built in Centennial Park. Come and walk the labyrinth painted on the grass in the field in Centennial Park where the sandstone labyrinth will eventually be built. 6 A new prayer time for St Mark's in the tradition of Taizé. Meeting monthly on the second Wednesday, the less-thanan-hour long gathering will include song, readings, prayer and more song. All welcome to the first gathering: Wednesday 14 November at 7.30pm at St Mark's Church St George & Sutherland Amnesty presents an inspiring film 'Between the Devil & The Deep Blue Sea' in the Cronulla Cinema at 7pm on Wednesday 24 October. Cost $20 conc $16. You can buy tickets on-line Men and women who saw active service post Korean war. As you are aware St. Marks is a War Memorial Church. In the Narthex a Cabinet, contains a Remembrance Book, with the names of servicemen and women, from the South Hurstville area, who saw active service in wars up to and including the Korean War. We wish to update the book by including those who have served in theatres of war since then: Malaysian Incursion, Desert Storm, Borneo the Balkans, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. If a relative, friend or you know of anybody who served in a war zone since the Korean War please give details name, arm of the services, war zone to Wilf Ewens ewenssnr@gmail.com or leave a note in the box in the narthex Summer Pilgrimage opportunity with ABM Palestine of Jesus Course St George's College Jerusalem St George's College Jerusalem is located alongside the Anglican Cathedral in Jerusalem, a short walk from the gates of the old city. The Palestine of Jesus Course is a 14 day study tour with both academic and devotional aspects. ABM is arranging a group from Australia who will participate in the Palestine of Jesus Course between January The group will be led by ABM Executive Director John Deane.
