3 INTERCESSIONS Father of all and lover of souls we hold in grateful remembrance all those who have died in times of war. As we commemorate the end of World War 1 we pray that the world may find peace for the future. We pray for the mission and unity of the Church throughout the World, today remembering the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea. We pray for the children in Kagera and for the staff of the Church Schools. In our diocese we pray for the Cathedral Chapter and staff and for the new Dean Joe Hawes. In our life at the Tower we pray for the special WW1 Commemoration liturgy this evening. We pray that we can make the Church and Churchyard available for those who find it a place of peace and rest. We pray for those who are caught up in drug misuse, and for those who endeavour to free them from addiction. We pray for peace in the World. Guide the Leaders of Nations into ways of peace and justice; that all people can be treated with compassion and understanding. For our Government Ministers as they struggle to find a realistic way through the Brexit negotiations. We pray for the people of Western Japan suffering following the recent floods and mudslides. For all who work to overcome weather conditions resulting from climate change. We give thanks for the rescue of the boys trapped in the flooded caves in Thailand. For the courage and skill of the divers who brought them out safely. We pray for those we know who are sick or otherwise distressed including: Karen Lindsay, Baby Harry Hausermann and family and Simon Gilbert. We continue to pray for Adrian Parry, George Pipe, Bob Tostevin, Barbara Bellamy, Carolyn, Tony Brook-Carr and Grace Chandler. We pray for those unable to be regularly with us in Church, including this week: Margrid Brooks and Mary Gurney. Be with them and those who care for them. We pray rest in peace and rise in glory for those who have recently died and we pray for all who mourn. We give thanks for those whose remembrance falls at this time of year, among them Henry Hanley. PRAYER FOR THE DAY (The Collect) Lord of all power and might, he author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 4 BIBLE NOTES St Mark s story about the death of John the Baptist has some very strange things about it. It is hardly likely that Jewish royalty would have danced like Herodias, and Herod had no power to give away half his kingdom even if he had wanted to. It sounds like fake news! So one has to ask what the purpose of this story really is. The story only appears in this kind of detail in St Mark which is also the earliest gospel. Matthew and Luke both used a lot of St Mark s material, but their accounts of this story are much shorter. Matthew omits any mention of the offer of half the kingdom and Luke doesn t mention any seductive dancing. So it s clear that both Matthew and Luke have their own reservations. It s important to remember that the real focus of this story is John the Baptist, and there are two particular messages. Firstly, John was a real prophet, and the story has some obvious echoes of the ways that Old Testament prophets were treated by degenerate courts. But secondly, the story makes very clear that John s prophetic ministry came to an end. He was the forerunner for the new thing that God was doing in Jesus Christ. And it was vital that the followers of Jesus kept their eyes on Jesus himself and did not keep harking back to what came before. So in this passage John the Baptist is honoured as a genuine prophet, but it is made clear that his task is concluded, as John himself knew it was. In times of significant change, it is important both to honour the past and to envision the future. For Christians, Jesus is always the one who reveals the future purposes of God. As the Church today lives once again in fast changing times, it is only with eyes firmly and faithfully fixed on Jesus that we will find our way forward. In the work and the growth of the Kingdom of God, everyone has their vital part to play, but it is the vision of Jesus that really counts. Canon Charles FIRST READING Ephesians Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of 4

5 him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory. GOSPEL READING Mark King Herod heard of the healings and other miracles, for Jesus name had become known. Some were saying, John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him. But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. But when Herod heard of it, he said, John, whom I beheaded, has been raised. For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother s wife. And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it. And he solemnly swore to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom. She went out and said to her mother, What should I ask for? She replied, The head of John the Baptist. Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptizer on a platter. The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. Due to antisocial and criminal behaviour increasing both in frequency and severity, the PCC has felt obliged to review church opening times and staffing. We are seeking volunteer welcomers to be in church on Monday to Friday mornings, from 10AM 12N This will enable the church to remain open in the morning whilst the cleaner is on site and to offer visitors a warm welcome. There will no longer be a welcomers rota for weekdays, instead, a sign-up sheet will be made available at the back of church. When there are no volunteers then the church will remain closed so that we are not putting our cleaner s safety at risk. There will continue to be a rota for Saturday welcomers, however sessions will no longer be in the afternoon but will change to 10AM 12N.
