The St John s Evensong Choir sings all English music, including Sir John Stainer s exciting anthem for double choir I Saw The Lord, an anthem for the Feast of the Holy Trinity. A wonderful afternoon tea and sherry follow the Office, with an opportunity to toast Her Majesty. Tomorrow is the RED LETTER DAY of St Barnabas, Apostle and Martyr, but as it is a public holiday, there will not be the usual observance. 4 WARRIOR WELCOME HOME, DARWIN Pentecost 2017 Dear Friends, We re halfway through our WWH NT program and we need to keep praying. The opening reception at Parliament House Darwin was a blessing. We didn t have as many soldiers attending as I had hoped but those there felt appropriately appreciated and enjoyed a free beer with the dignitaries of the Northern Territory. I suspect the WWH message had more effect upon the dignitaries than the diggers. Numbers for Saturday were not what I had hoped. Hospitalised children and some participants in hospital themselves are the realities. More have said they want to come this Saturday. I hope that you all had a blessed Whitsun; it was certainly fun in Darwin with balloons flying around the Cathedral and a wind ensemble playing all the music. This Trinity weekend we plan a church leaders session on Friday afternoon, WWH on Saturday, closing service on Sunday and a possible meeting with injured soldiers on Monday before I fly home. God has put so many amazing parts of this program in place in Darwin and many people are working hard. Support from chaplains, commanders and the Cathedral parish has been great; please pray that God will now send those that He wants to bless at His supper. 5 John Brandon has called a periodic SIDEMEN S MEETING for Thursday evening, 15 June, 6:00PM in the crypt. The FORWARD AND BACH concerts, directed by Antony Pitts and including a Luther-inspired work by Brett McKern continue, with remaining Sydney dates of 17 and 22 June and concerts in Newcastle, Melbourne and Canberra. Copies of the magazine are available in the narthex and the article is on Page 6. Every day people in Gordon declutter, downsize or decide they don t like their Christmas presents and they bring items to the Op Shop. Additional OP SHOP WORKERS are needed for sorting and pricing donations on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for Friday and Saturday sale days. BIBLE STUDY GROUPS meet here Wednesday mornings at 10:00AM with the Rector, in the crypt and Wednesday evenings at 5:00PM a ladies group, in the church office. Father Keith is considering FORMING ADDITIONAL BIBLE STUDY GROUPS. Let him know if you are interested and what day and time would suit you. If you are ever injured at church or you sustain damage to your car, after notifying the church office, you will need to submit, as soon as possible, an INCIDENT REPORT to Parish Manager Rosemary Angus. These forms are in the church s front office, on the shelves near the entrance door from the hall, in a yellow binder marked Risk Management Incident Reporting. 6 Natalie Maschmeyer informs us that as part of the SRE TEACHER ACCREDITATION PROCESS, it is now necessary for Scripture teachers to be observed teaching one lesson annually. The list of people eligible to carry out this observation appears below (direct quote from Youthworks website). *Peer review (by another accredited SRE Teacher) *An accredited SRE Trainer *A Diocesan Rector *A licensed paid ministry worker (Assistant Minister / Youth Minister / Children s Minister, et cetera) *A teacher or retired teacher There are six Scripture teachers working Tuesday mornings at Gordon East Public School who will need observation. Consider this a call for qualified persons to come forward. See Natalie Maschmeyer, who attends the 9:30AM service, or her at n.a.maschmeyer@iinet.net.au. WEEKDAY VERGERS are needed, especially on Mondays and Wednesdays when there is no-one working in the church office. Contact Chris Russell or Rosemary Angus. Epping Baptist Church has arranged for the screening of a new film called THE CASE FOR CHRIST, based on the very popular book by Lee Strobel. The film will be shown Sunday, 18 June, 4:00PM at Macquarie Events Cinema. 7 Report on KU-RING-GAI INTER-CHURCH COMMITTEE Activity During the WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY As a special event for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Ku-ring-gai Inter-church Committee arranged a prayer service on Friday night, 2 June at St Swithun s Church, Pymble, which attracted a large attendance of clergy and parishioners from the various churches in the area. Ann Powell, a committee delegate from St Swithun s, was largely responsible for organizing the event with much help from her Rector, Rev d Roger Chilton. Several committee members assisted in preparing a black painted wall of boxes in front of the communion rail, highlighting our many obstacles to peaceful unity within personal and community relationships which need attention. This wall reached to the base of the gold cross above the altar and was dismantled, stone by stone, during the service, ending by its surprisingly complete absence after the very active circulation of people throughout the church for Peace be with you. This was explained as being in symbolic remembrance of toppling the Berlin Wall. All committee members took an active individual part in the service and were joined by host Rev d Roger Chilton, plus St Swithun s choir and organist, a band and a short pageant on the Prodigal Son by students from Ku-ring-gai High School led by Lisa Andraws, and a sermon by the Editor-in-Chief from the ecumenical publication Eternity, John Sandeman. Many people then enjoyed refreshments provided by church and committee members in the adjoining church hall. It was an extremely moving event and many of the attendees expressed a hope for it to be a feature in future years.
