We extend a warm welcome to those visiting or worshipping with us for the first time today. Sunday Services 9:00am Eucharist A service of Holy Communion, which is usually sung with hymns and a sermon. On the 4 th Sunday of the month the service is said. Children s Church meets in the meeting room at 9 am on the 1 st, 3 rd and 5 th Sundays of the month and at 5 pm on the 4 th Sunday. 2 From the Rector On Easter evening, the risen Jesus appears and shows the disciples his hands and his side. It is Jesus who makes the first, convincing move to enable the disciples to believe that he has truly risen from the dead. He wants the disciples to see him, to regain their confidence and peace. To this end, he bestows upon them the gift of the Holy Spirit. With this gift, the disciples are able to rejoice, and to believe that he is truly risen. But this Jesus is not just an old friend who has been absent for a time. The disciples have never seen this Jesus. He bears the marks of suffering and death. Yet he is risen, never to die again. He has conquered death for himself and for all of us. Thomas wasn t there and needed proof. I m sure many of us would be the same. Whether we see clearly like the gathered disciples, or only through doubting like Thomas, the risen Jesus is, nevertheless, always present in our midst removing all obstacles to belief. Belief always goes beyond what we can prove, and often means we must go out on a limb. Belief in the risen Lord means that we die to self so that we can encounter the risen Jesus around us. This means we run the risk of being vulnerable and at times we might have nail marks from being wounded. So it was with Jesus. Out of his vulnerability, love, and self- giving came risen Life! So it will be with us. The challenge to us is to put aside our own fears and embrace belief, with all its consequences. Just as the risen Jesus was relentless in bringing the disciples from disbelief to belief, and in bringing them to the cross, so he is with us. Even after his resurrection, Jesus still challenges us in living out our faith by embracing both dying and rising in our own lives. Having passed over from our Lenten discipline to Easter rejoicing doesn t mean that we can forget about the dying required for living the Christian life. Now, however, we have again experienced Easter joy, a glimpse and promise of the fullness of Life to come. This gives us the confidence to believe, to live the life given to us now, and to embrace the risen Jesus. Have a great week. Fr. Nick 2

4 Holy Communion The Anglican Church of Australia offers the hospitality of the altar to all baptized Christians. Please come forward to receive from the Celebrant and then move to receive from one of the chalices. If you cannot come to the priest, please let one of the sides- people know and the sacrament will be brought to you. 5 News A big thank you. to everybody who has supported our services throughout Holy Week and Easter and to all those who have cleaned, decorated, welcomed, read, led our prayers and music, and assisted in any way at our Holy Week and Easter services. It s was a marvellous team effort and very much appreciated. Opportunities for young singers We currently have vacancies for young singers aged 8-18 in our junior and senior choirs. For more information, please contact Kate Oliver, Director of Music on Support our Music Last month we launched the fundraising for our Music Foundation, which is intended to not only enable us to continue the existing musical arrangements in the parish, but also expand them. The money from Alice Mapstone s legacy that was historically set aside to pay our musicians will run out later this year, and If you would like to pledge money towards the future costs of our music, please complete a pledge form which you will find in the Mapstone Music Foundation brochures on the round table in the Narthex. 7 Readings A Reading from the Book of Acts Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means son of encouragement ). He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet. Hear the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Acts 4:32-37 Psalm 133 Behold how good and pleasant it is to dwell together in unity. It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard, Even on Aaron s beard, running down upon the collar of his clothing. It is like the dew of Hermon running down upon the hills of Zion. 7

Psalm 133 A Reading from the First Letter of John We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus 8

9 Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. Hear the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. 1 John 1:1-2:2 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. 9

10 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. John 20:19-31 The Gospel of the Lord. ELECTORAL ROLL In accordance with the Parish Governance Statute 2016, in each general election year for lay members of Synod and alternates, all enrolments on the electoral roll must be renewed between 1 March and the date which is one month prior to the relevant annual meeting. Church Council will be setting the date for the annual meeting at its April meeting, which is likely to be June, in order to allow sufficient time for the audit to be completed is a general election year for Synod, therefore everybody who wishes to vote at the Annual Congregational Meeting MUST complete and sign a new Schedule 1 Form. If you do not do so, you will not be able to vote. Schedule 1 forms may be obtained from the table in the Narthex. Please return completed forms to the Church Office as soon as possible.
