How will we keep the faith and our parish mission going? Pope benedict resigns S tunning news from Rome this past week: Pope Benedict will resign from the papacy effective February 28. While this came as a surprise to many even those close to the Holy Father- his reasons are understandable and admirable. He stated quite simply, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. The pope went on to say that he recognizes he no longer has the strength of mind and body to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to him. The cardinals will gather in Rome in the next month to choose a successor. It appears this decision has been on Pope Benedict s mind for several months and has brought him to deep prayer and careful discernment. The decision speaks of his humility, courage, and wisdom. On the day of his elevation to the papacy in 2005 he spoke of how humbled he felt to take on the task of guiding the universal church. His courage is shown in stepping down from the papacy, an action which had been unprecedented for 600 years. And Benedict s wisdom is revealed by his recognizing the very real physical and mental limitations of a man who is soon to be 86 years old. He also understands that in a world of rapid change and in a church facing so many daunting challenges, there needs to be a leader who has the ability and stamina to carry out its mission. In the coming weeks there will be time to appreciate the legacy of Pope Benedict and how he has shaped the church in his 8- year pontificate. Aside from the administrative duties he has performed, he authored 3 major encyclicals and wrote a 3 volume work on the Life of Jesus. This is a testimony to his theological acumen and literary skill. There will now be much speculation about who will take Pope Benedict s place. I am not sure dwelling on such speculation is all that profitable. We might do better by prayerfully calling upon the Holy Spirit to guide those gathered in the conclave in Rome. Their choice of a successor will have a lasting effect upon all the faithful throughout the world for years to come. ********* As a parish we are also facing a time of transition. This past Tuesday, parishioners gathered in the school auditorium to offer input to diocesan personnel regarding the change in pastors that will take place this June. In addition, a number of parishioners were asked to write to the Clergy Personnel Office and indicate the areas of need in the parish, the strengths of the parish, and the qualities a new pastor should possess. All of this data will help the Personnel Assignment Board and Bishop Murphy make a wise and informed choice as to my successor. I ask you to continue to offer your prayers in this time of decision making and transition. 3

7 GIFTED, ENGAGED AND GROWING PASTORAL PLAN Goal 1: To provide opportunities for all parishioners to discover and live their strengths, and thereby engage more parishioners in service to the parish and community Living Your Strengths Analytical God has Analytical people with the desire and ability to search for reasons and causes for things, and to think about all the factors that might affect a situation. If Analytical is one of your Strengths, here are some ways to develop your Strength for the glory of God: Use your cool, logical, analytical head to defuse situations overcharged with emotion Make sure you ask all the necessary questions in a situation so that your analysis can help move the situation in a positive direction. Use your analytical abilities to explore a faith concept or topic. You will find that by analyzing a concept, your faith will grow stronger and deeper What are YOUR God-given gifts and talents? Take the StrengthsFinder and find out! Books with the StrengthsFinder assessment access code are available in the parish office anytime. JOIN OUR WEB, FACEBOOK AND TWITTER COMMUNITIES! Goal 2 : To motivate and equip engaged parishioners to reach out and invite others to become engaged. Belonging More Deeply YOU VE BEEN PRAYING FOR SOMEONE TO BELONG MORE DEEPLY. WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT? TAKE AN INVITATION BROCHURE. GIVE IT TO SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT. INVITE THEM TO JOIN YOU AT MASS OR A PARISH EVENT. KEEP PRAYING AND TRUST THE SPIRIT!! Goal 3: To increase support and recognition of engaged parishioners What Happened at Vatican II? A six-session monthly series celebrating the anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council What changed and what didn t and why? Something old; something new? How has the Council been accepted? 8 Liturgy corner FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT February 17, 1013 During the 40 days Jesus spends in the wilderness, he undergoes thorough temptation. As his body is craving food, he is tempted to create loaves of bread and escape the spiritual discipline of fasting. As his mind prepares for his public ministry, he is tempted to seize great power in a worldly way, instead of the simple life of preaching, teaching, service, and sacrifice ahead of him. Finally, his spirit is tempted to test God to ascertain if God will really be there for him, even through Calvary. Like us in every way but sin. Jesus temptations grew out of the fears he may have had about having to carry out his calling. Yet his trust in God was greater. What are your greatest fears? Take these in prayer to God as you entrust yourself to God s care. First Reading: Today s test is set within the context of a sacrificial offering to the Lord. The words, in effect, recount the early history of the Israelite people beginning with the patriarchs. Both Abraham, the father of the chosen people, and later Jacob, his grandson with his sons and their households, went down to the land of Egypt to escape the famine in their own land. Over time, the Hebrews were oppressed and enslaved by the Egyptians. When they cried out for deliverance, the Lord raised up Moses as their leader and spokesman, and brought them out of the land of Egypt into the freedom of a new life in the promised land where they are to offer the fruits of the harvest as a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Responsorial Psalm 91: This psalm is a prayer of confidence in the Lord s protection during times of danger. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. Second Reading: We hear the confession of the Christian faith: Jesus is Lord and God raised him from the dead. In the new covenant inaugurated by Christ, there is no distinction between Jew and Greek. All people are offered salvation through faith. (Note the repetition of the words believe, faith, and saved. ) Gospel: Today s Gospel follows upon Jesus baptism and must be seen in connection with it. At his baptism, the Holy Spirit of God descended upon him and remained, directing all the subsequent events of his life. In today s Gospel the Spirit leads Jesus out to the desert to be tempted (Luke 4:1-1). More than a test of endurance, this was a test of fidelity and commitment to who he was as the Son of God and to the use of the extraordinary powers God had bestowed on him. Jesus is faithful. Note how the scriptures were a support to him in this fidelity. But the devil had not given up. He only awaited another opportunity LENTEN SOUP AND BREAD SUPPER Hosted by: The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Date: Wednesday, March 6 st Time: 6PM Place: School Gym Good Will Offering appreciated. 13 SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Each year, every Catholic family throughout Long Island is invited to Serve God by Serving Others by participating in the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal is the main lifeline for more than 60 programs and ministries that serve 600,000 people each year, while allowing us to join together to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ right here in our own Long Island Community. The Appeal supports programs that: Help our young people grow in their faith and prepare for the Sacraments Provide quality education for our children Form our priests, deacons and lay leaders Feed the hungry Assist those in need after a disaster like Hurricane Sandy Our original goal was $97,500. Due to the Capital Campaign our goal for 2013 is reduced by 50% to $48,750. If we reach 70% of our original goal, we will receive back all monies beyond that percent. Continue to help those in need and sustain our track record of always going above our goal. The rebate last year for doing this amounted to $36,160. Your gift will make a difference in someone s life on Long Island. 13
