3 Clairvaux chronicle Ever hopeful today Divine Mercy Sunday April 7, pm - 4pm in the Church O most Holy Trinity! As many times as I breathe, as many times as my heart beats, as many times as my blood pulsates through my body, so many thousand times do I glorify your mercy. Sister Faustina Come and pray with us. O n Holy Saturday last weekend 7 young adults were baptized, confirmed and welcomed into the Church. For them it was also the occasion of receiving Holy Communion for the first time. Aside from the inspiring ritual that took place, seeing these young people desire to become Catholic was a source of hope. Initiation into the Christian life and into the Church is not a simple process. For months they have been gathering each Sunday morning with a member of the staff to learn what it means to be a Christian and a Catholic. They studied and prayed together. They were a source of strength and encouragement to one another. In this day and age when we observe many young adults drifting away from church practice, it is reassuring to know that there are also some who genuinely have a desire to be grounded in a life of faith and follow the Christian path. Interestingly enough, four of the young adults are sisters. That fact serves as a striking example of how family members can be such a positive influence on one another Months ago we invited regular worshippers here at St. Bernard s to pray for someone they knew personally in the hope that person might return to church. Their names were written on cards that were placed near the sanctuary. You may recall when we conducted the Gallup Survey on church engagement, one of the key areas of success was based on such statements as, in the last month I have invited someone to participate in my parish, and there is someone in my parish who encourages my spiritual development. In one way or another our newly baptized experienced something of this kind of personal invitation and encouragement. The cards continue to remain near the altar. Hopefully the prayer for those named on those cards continues. Beyond our prayers, there is nothing quite like the power of example in revealing the richness of our faith. Just think of the example Pope Francis has shown in the short time he has been the Holy Father. His deeds speak volumes about the virtue of humility and concern for the poor. As we go through these 50 days of the Easter Season, may our prayer and example remain undiminished and our spirit remain ever hopeful. 3

6 GIFTED, ENGAGED AND GROWING St. Bernard S pastoral plan SIX REASONS NOT TO TAKE THE STRENGTHSFINDER! (Yes, you read that right!) For almost four years we have been encouraging you to take the fun and easy online assessment called the StrengthsFinder as a way of learning or naming the top 5 innate talents and gifts that God thoughtfully dreamed up for you at the moment of your conception. It s a clue to discovering God s plan for your life who God made you to be and what God made you to do in this life. Over 150 people have reported their Strengths back to us; and hundreds more have gotten the book and access code. Of those 150, half have participated in an Explore Your Strengths group. Still, we know that many people are hesitant for various reasons. Here are some of them that we hear a lot: 1. I m not sure what it is/don t use a computer. Read above to see what it is! You answer 180 easy questions and Gallup analyzes your answers and BINGO! You get a direct message from God!! Need help? Just contact the parish office and we ll arrange for you to come to the parish and take it here, with assistance if you need it. 2. I don t want to to read a book or join a group! We ll let you in on a secret. You really don t have to read the book if you don t want to; just crack open the access code, do the survey, and get your results. But we think you ll WANT to read it after that, as it helps you understand your strengths better. And you don t have to join a group. (But you might WANT to.) 3. What s it got to do with real life? It s not a religious assessment. It s used in business, education and colleges all over the world. People use it to better under stand and use their gifts and talents at home, work and in community. The book :) is full of examples of how the StrengthsFinder has helped people s marriages, family life, and careers. 4. or What s it got to do with Church? That being said. The StrengthsFinder is all about our relationship with God! Discovering who God made you to be and what God made you to do is an important part of the Christian spiritual journey. The book should you choose to read it makes this all-important connection. 5. It s a trick to get me to volunteer. No tricks. We take volunteering too seriously to trick someone into it; it has to be something a person feels called to do. It is true that after taking the StrengthsFinder some people have been moved to offer their time and talent to the parish, and we make every effort to match people with ministries that use their strengths. 6. I don t have any gifts or talents. We beg to differ. God SAYS you do - all through the Bible. Are you going to argue with the Almighty?? For info contact Diane Vella at or dvella@stbernardslevittown.org Get a book and access code Hear a witness talk at Mass Sign up to join an Explore Your Strengths group 4 Wed. mornings or evenings starting May 8. Start living the life God intended! 6

8 8 Divine Mercy To know the richness of mercy is to share in the dispositions of the heart of our Redeemer by experiencing in ourselves something of the shuddering horror at the vision of the sins of the world which filled his heart. At the same time divine mercy transfigures us, filling us with the faith to cry out united with the risen Christ, Once I was dead, but now I am alive for ever. Magnificat, April 2013 Liturgy corner SOLEMNITY OF THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER, SUNDAY OF THE DIVINE MERCY April 7, 2013 Through Christian art and cinema, we have come to imagine the Risen Christ as whole, glowing, transcendent and powerful, the opposite of the Man of Sorrows suffering through the Passion. Yet the wounds on Jesus hands, feet, and side remained on his risen body as signs of the suffering he endured and the death he conquered. The Apostles are encouraged by seeing his wounds, though they are also confronted with the mystery of the bodily Resurrection. First Reading: Today s reading begins and ends with the signs and wonders worked by Peter and the other Apostles, especially healing and exorcisms. In between, there are somewhat contradictory verses concerning the fear that many people had of joining them and the fact that many did! We find all kinds of emotions, all kinds of signs and wonders in the nascent church and in our own lives as well. Responsorial Psalm 118 The psalmist acclaims God s everlasting love and invites his bearers to give thanks. The rejected stone is now the cornerstone, and the psalmist experiences life, not death, on this day of salvation. Second Reading: Easter s victory comes only after the Cross. So it was for Jesus, so it will be for John, who is imprisoned on the island of Patmos because of his witness to Jesus. His vision of the victorious Lord sustains and encourages him. His vision is likewise a call to make known what he sees and hears. Gospel: The Risen Christ comes into the midst of his fearful disciples, bringing them peace, gifting them with his Spirit, and sending them to bring forgiveness. Thomas, who was absent, does not believe the witness of the others. A week later he is with the disciples gathered again behind locked doors. Jesus invites Thomas to see, to touch, and to believe; Jesus pronounces a blessing on all who will believe without seeing. We are among them. Sourcebook 2013 Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, Monday, April 8 Through the angel Gabriel, the Spirit of God comes to Mary in the most unfeasible way, asking the impossible. As a young woman engaged to be married, being found pregnant would have meant her death in the culture of the time. She risks hurting Joseph, bringing shame on their families, and setting herself up for execution, because she is sure of one thing: God calls her to be Mother to the Son of God. Mary is special because her faith is stronger than her fear. She does not see the road ahead but knows that God wills for her to journey it nonetheless. Trusting in God above all, she consents her will, becoming the first and most important vessel of bringing Christ s presence into the world. Sourcebook 2013

A Note of Thanks... Karen Borst, one of our parishioners who attends Mt. St. Mary s College in Newburgh, NY, asked if the parish would like to help her participate in a trip with Habitat for Humanity. Upon her return, she sent the following note of thanks. It is our privilege to help young people go to places we can t visit, and with our help, do the strenuous work of rebuilding people s lives. This is Karen on the ladder! Thank you so much for the generous donation for my Habitat for Humanity trip to Dickinson, Texas. From Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, our group twelve students and two chaperones - traveled from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where we were staying for the week, to the worksite. While there, we worked on two homes, one of which had been repossessed for ten years that was the one I specifically worked on. Inside of these houses, we painted the walls, ceiling and trim in all seven rooms as well as ripped up the linoleum floor. We cleaned the windows, ripped out the toilets, and changed electrical circuits. After leaving the worksite for the day, we were free to explore the popular sites in the area. The money that you graciously donated went towards the airfare and meals throughout the trip. Thank you to St. Bernard s Parish, the Parish Social Ministry and the St. Vincent de Paul Society for all of your donations. Your financial assistance helped make this trip a success.
