1 The Cornerstone January 2018 Our Vision We envision a church that proclaims the liberating Gospel of Jesus Christ by identifying itself as a church of and for our community. We envision a church that, following the example of Jesus, prays, welcomes people of every race, class or human condition, and encourages everyone to fulfill his or her ministry. Inside this issue: G.R.O.W. Conference MLK Service Per Capita Church Financials Food Pantry Kirk News 3 Advent Families 4 Calendar 5 Church Events 6 Christmas Tea Quilt of Valor Session Snippets Deacon s Details Children s Pageant G.R.O.W. The cost is $35 (6th person from your church is free!) For information please call or AdminAsst@heartlandpby.org. G.R.O.W. is organized by Heartland Presbytery for: Equipping the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. - Ephesians 4:12 Martin Luther King Service Our collaborative Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service with Covenant Presbyterian Church, Crossroads Community Church, Swore Corridor Churches and Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room will be Sunday, January 14th with a meal at 5:00 p.m. and the worship service beginning at 6:30 p.m. We hope that you will be able to participate in this important service. Per Capita Per Capita is the amount of money that each member contributes to the work of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Per Capita covers the cost of the work of the Office of General Assembly and the Presbyterian Mission Agency. All of the materials, resources, travel, Interfaith work, of the church are paid from our Per Capita. In addition the work of the Synod of Mid-America and Heartland Presbytery is paid from our Per Capita. In 2018 the Per Capita assessment is $43.29, with the allocation breakdown is as follows: General Assembly $7.73, Synod $2.80 and Presbytery $ Covenant Presbyterian Church pays $43.29 per member. It would help us is you could write a check for that amount per person in your family. This is only for confirmed members, and not children of the church. Thank you.

3 january 2018 Page 3 Kirk News I enjoy a new year. It gives us a point-in-time to reflect and to look ahead. The year of 2017 was a truly amazing year at Covenant Presbyterian Church. We received eight new members Franklin Banks, Letha Chadria, Jerry Parrish, Regina Parrish, Brandon Sublett, Heather and Dave Klinkenberg and Lori Davis. Each has become an integral part of the Covenant family, we are blessed by your presence. We can only imagine what 2018 will bring. In 2017 we saw the creation of the Covenant Community Health and Wellness Center. Could it only be a year old? We are truly blessed with Laura Hyland, Debbie and Maxine and the ministry they serve through Covenant. This year we have served 468 community and church members. We can only imagine what 2018 will bring. Our food pantry has seen enormous growth. We ve become a client choice pantry, giving our neighbors the ability to pick items that best fit their needs. It s so much better than us giving them what we think they want. Additionally our food selection is becoming healthier. We can only imagine what 2018 will bring In 2017 the Adult Bible Study Class delved deeply into God s history, God s call for us, and our own spirituality. If you want to be a part of a meaningful conversation you are invited to come to the Sunday School Class at 9:30 on Sunday mornings. We discuss, listen, learn and grow together. You are welcome to be a part of this spiritual, connected and diverse group. We can only imagine what 2018 will bring and you are invited. Our worship service continues to evolve. In 2017 the components of worship came together creating a service that is authentic, connected, real and engaged. I am truly grateful for our musicians, Osric Reavis III, Joe Straws and Richard Tucker and our choir who are strong and beautiful. We are truly grateful, and we can only imagine what 2018 will bring. The office functions in an extraordinary manner. We are efficient, effective and dedicated. I give great thanks to God for our amazing Office Manager, Orlandra Brown. The office is the hub of the church Monday through Friday and it rocks! We can only imagine what 2018 will bring. We are strong, we are alive and we are faithful. We have many blessings and are looking forward to being Christ s hands, legs, eyes, ears as we serve as the body of Christ in Kansas City, Missouri. We can only imagine what 2018 will bring. Thank you for being an important part of this ministry. We pray blessings for you and your family in the coming months of We can only imagine what 2018 will bring. In Christ s Service, We are grateful. Kirk P. Perucca, Pastor
