4 Community Lay Directors Do you remember your Walk and all the special moments?? All of the things that were done for you by people that you didn t even know?? From the uncertainty of Thursday evening send-off, to the tears & joy of Sunday afternoon, each walk is special and unique. In order for the weekend to flow there were behind the scenes servants. Many people were praying and serving to help you get a special start to your 72 hour Walk to Emmaus week-end. The full Walk experience is so much more than just the 72 hour weekend. This is your fourth day, and how is it going?? Now is the time that we all have the opportunity to step up and help others experience a Walk to Emmaus Weekend. Each team has only 26 final spots, but so many more spots are required to be filled. Opportunities begin with sponsoring a Pilgrim; you still have time for the women s walk. The prayer vigil needs 144 slots filled in for each walk, is your name on the chart yet?? If you are making Agape please get your gifts to the walk by Thursday evening if possible. Working with the out of conference room team & serving in the kitchen are both very busy and blessed opportunities. These two opportunities need many folks at different times from Thursday till Sunday. We are sure that they can give you an opportunity to serve on the walk. Of course being in attendance at Candle light & closing is open to all. Filling up the placemats for Sunday s breakfast, and sending Agape notes for Sunday afternoon. That sounds like an abundance of opportunities to serve so sign up and bless the pilgrims of Walk # 45. Please find the contacts in this Rainbow Connection and a make a call to serve Western New York Walk to Emmaus #45. Decolores, Jim and Lora Keiper Lora Keiper traveling to Nashville! Time is allotted for discussions among the many Emmaus communities that will be represented where concerns and suggestions can be shared and brought back to their communities. You can read more in the June issue of the Rainbow Connection. Expenses for travel are to be expected. If you would like to offer financial support for Lora s trip to Nashville, you may send a check to the Emmaus Treasurers, Duane and Anita Domes. (Address below). 8 CHRYSALIS Board of Directors * correction since last month AGAPE Planning for the Fall Walks is in progress. The teams have been picked. Now is the time to start praying for the team and about who YOU will be sponsoring. With the number of members we have, we should be able to have full Walks every time. Have you decided who you will sponsor. Start thinking about agape for the up-coming walks! Again, pray for the team as it develops and throughout the coming months. Pray without ceasing! If you have agape napkin and placemat packets please get them back to us via mail or through a board member. 72 Hour Prayer Vigil Remember your walk and seeing the posted prayer vigil. There were so many people praying for you and your fellow pilgrims and the team. Just 30 minutes to devote to the new pilgrims and the team members over their weekend will show that you truly care. Sign-up now to get a convenient time. Currently only about HALF of the time slots have been taken in each of the prayer vigils, time is running out. The men s walk is less than a month away please support the team and the pilgrims. 9 Team Selection Uncovered! Perhaps as new information for some, and as refresher for others, we would like to share a bit about how Walk and Flight teams are chosen and how you, too, can serve our amazing God in this way and other ways in our Emmaus-Chrysalis Community. First, how can you serve? Progressive servanthood, which is serving in different Community and then more team-oriented roles, is part of the answer. Although there is a one-year waiting period for sponsoring someone on the Walk and for serving on team, there is no waiting period to get involved, for example, by helping in the kitchen, with set up at Candlelight, by cleaning bathrooms or other tasks on the out of conference room support team on the next Walk or Flight, and serving on the Board. In other words, involvement in the Emmaus-Chrysalis community is important so that when you are asked to serve on team you have greater level of comfort, a better understanding of how and why the weekend happens the way it does, and can best support it then in any role, whether inside or outside of the conference room team. Read the Rainbow Connection and get involved! Attendance at a Gathering also shows your interest in Emmaus because you are concerned with living out your Fourth Day and being accountable for it. Gathering attendance is tracked and reviewed at team selection time. Involvement in a small Group Reunion is also encouraged. If you have been on a Walk or Flight, have done these things and never been asked to serve on team, or your situation has changed and you couldn t before but now can serve on team, please let me or any committee or board member know. Our 2013 Committee members are Bill Barber, Norb Fuest, Carol Goodwin, Cheryl Isaman, Alethia Keiper, Jan Mortimer, John Trowbridge and Kathy Wessel. How are teams chosen? The Team Selection committee is made up of nine members who must have served as Lay Director of a Walk. Members serve a three-year term and three members rotate on and off each year. It is this group, and the Community Lay and Spiritual Directors, as well as the upcoming Walk or Flight Lay and Spiritual Directors, who are charged with assisting in compiling a list of names from which the Lay and Spiritual Directors will make their calls. Before going any further, I would like to emphasize one thing: prayer. Prayer is present and integral to every part of the process from selecting the members of the Team Selection committee to the final calls made by the Lay and Spiritual Directors. That s why so many Lay Directors refer to their team as God s team. Because truly it is. That being said, we need to assist God in his selection as we know that Teresa of Avila reminded us that Christ has no body on earth now but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours... A team selection meeting of the above described group takes place typically during the afternoon of the Walk Reunion for the following Walk. Flight team selection is generally conducted about six months before the Flight. Before the meeting, team members complete a three-deep list of potential team candidates. With prayer, first-hand knowledge and poring over the database of team service and participation in Community events, team members record names of Community members with varying amounts of service: one-third of the lay team with no prior team service (assistant table leaders), one-third with one to three team experiences and one-third with more than three. At least one past Lay Director and one past Spiritual Director serve on team to provide support to the current Lay Director or Spiritual Director should he or she need it. At the meeting, names are brought forth by the Lay and Spiritual Directors and committee members for each of the teams. From the final list, the Lay and Spiritual Directors will make their calls for service. While no process is perfect, this procedure has been developed and honed over time, following the Emmaus model from Nashville and it helps to ensure that in every Walk or Flight, some team members are moving into different and more experienced roles, eventually perhaps serving as lay director. Again, let us know if you believe you have been missed and would like to serve, and we encourage anyone interested in serving on team (or not) to take advantage of the many servant opportunities outside of the conference room. Every role is equally important to sharing these Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis Flights with adults and youth for the building of the kingdom and to the glory of God! De Colores! Rose Caldwell, 2013 Team Selection Chair 9

10 From God s Holy Word And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in who we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1: 9-14 ESV From DUANE AND ANITA DOMES OUT OF CONFERENCE/WEEKEND SUPPORT STAFF COORDINATORS FALL WALKS #45 COMING SOON! The Men s and Women s Walks will take place at SPRINGVILLE UMC. Please mark your calendars with the dates below! Men s Walk #45 OCTOBER Women s Walk #45 OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 3 Our task is to coordinate the many volunteers required to serve as the Weekend Support Staff. Remember when YOU were a Pilgrim or served on Team and things seemed to be done automatically for you? The housekeeping was taken care of, restrooms were cleaned, the dining room was wonderfully decorated, chairs and tables were arranged at appropriate times and many other tasks seemed to happen automatically. Along with many others this is due to the behind the scenes service and commitment of the Weekend Support Staff! The Support Staff is there to serve not only the Pilgrims but also the team (especially the Logs ) so that in turn the team may better serve the Pilgrims. The Support Staff is a group of Emmaus community members willing to assist when available during the Walks. They are not required to be present for the entire weekend. Please note the dates of the Fall Walks and contact us via e mail or phone to inform us of your availability to serve. Thank You. De Colores!
