1 From the Community Lay Directors Volume 23 No. 7 Western New York Walk to Emmaus & Chrysalis July 2013 COMMUNITY PICNIC It s that time of year again! Summer is upon us! (well, sort of) and that means the Annual Emmaus Picnic will be here soon. Keep the date open, and mark your calendars now, July 27, from noon until 4:00 PM, at the Hamburg Fairgrounds in Hamburg, NY. Come out for an afternoon of fun, fellowship, food, games, singing and general merriment! Bring your families, your friends, maybe someone who might be interested in seeing a little more of this Emmaus thing you talk about, bring your musical instruments, a dish to pass, and in the interest of being good stewards, we are asking that you bring your own tableware, so that we might keep the garbage being thrown out to a minimum. Cups, plates and plasticware will be available, but please join us in being green and helping take care of our Earth. The Fairgrounds are located between South Park Ave. (Rt 62), and McKinley Parkway, and we will be using the Quinby Ave. entrance. See you there! Directions to Hamburg Fairgrounds: From North, East and West: Take I-90 to Exit 56 (Hamburg/Blasdell), turn right at light, take first left, South Park Ave. (Rt. #62 South), go 3.4 miles, turn light, Quinby Ave., fairgrounds entrance is on right, follow signs. Alternate route from East: Take US #20 (Southwestern Blvd.), past Ralph Wilson Stadium, to McKinley Pkwy. Left on McKinley, go 2 miles, turn light onto Quinby Drive, use 2 nd entrance, turn left into fairgrounds, look for signs. From South: Take US #219 to Hamburg Exit. Turn left on Rt 391 North (Boston State Rd), go 1.9 miles, turn right on McKinley Pkwy, go 1.8 miles, turn left on Quinby Dr, use 2 nd fairgrounds entrance on left. Any questions, please feel free to contact me. Mike Quesenberry, Fourth Day Chair. 2 From the Community Lay Directors Have you had a person, or couple on your heart to sponsor for the next walk? Or maybe you have been talking to someone for years, but the time never seems right. We have experienced this. So we are very excited to be able sponsor a young couple from our church for the fall walks. In the past the husband had spoken to Jim about Emmaus, but it didn t move forward at that time. Then Vern & Judy Heiler came to our church to speak about Walk to Emmaus. After hearing the Heiler s share their Walk to Emmaus experience, this couple and several others were very excited and intrigued about Walk to Emmaus. Several are looking forward to the fall walks. It is such a blessing to sponsor pilgrims on a Walk. Has God placed a person, or couple on your heart to sponsor? Why not talk to them about Walk to Emmaus. You could also talk to Vern & Judy about coming to speak to your congregation, or small group. Let s have a fall walk that is full of Christians that want to deepen their Walk with God. Then return home on fire & ready to do God s work. We would like to thank those that participated in the Time of Prayer and Fasting by reading the litany, playing music or praying. It was a wonderful blessing to gather together as a body and pray for ourselves, our churches, our community and the world church. God s spirit was certainly there with us all in each of our different locations. We re looking forward to what God has in store for us personally and for our Western New York Emmaus Community. Also, this year there are five positions that will be rotating off the Emmaus Board. Each board position serves for three years, with monthly meetings on the third Friday of the month In Attica. If you are interested in learning more about any of these openings please contact the current position holder, or the Board Chairs. Those positions changing are: TREASURE: This position takes care of all WNY Walk to Emmaus financial activity. A laptop with a bookkeeping program comes with the job. Currently Duane & Anita Domes are the WNY treasurers. MUSIC: This position conducts training workshops during the year. They also ensure that there are musicians at all Community wide events. They also keep the song books, and CCL license up to date. Currently Dan Benjamin is the music chair. KITCHEN: This position is in charge of all meals during the each Walk. They plan all menus, purchase the food and coordinate the many volunteers that help. Bill & Genice Perkins currently are the Kitchen Chairs. SECRETARY: This position is in charge of keeping minutes during monthly board meetings, and then distributes the minutes to all. They also keep the WNY Emmaus directory up to date with updated address/phone information as it is provided. Currently Kathy Wessell is serving as secretary. CLERGY: The board has three clergy positions, and rotates one off each year. They will help lead devotions & communion at the monthly Board meeting. Also would help the Community Spiritual Director as needed for other events. Currently serving is Pastor Joan Zimmerman. Chrysalis: The Chrysalis lay director also is a part of the Board. A new Chrysalis Lay Director will be voted on by a community wide vote later this year. Currently Kathy Weil is the Chrysalis Lay Director. We have enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors, and look forward serving with those called to take on a new role. We hope to see you in July at the summer picnic in Hamburg. DeColores, Jim & Lora AGAPE Planning for the Fall Walks is in progress. The teams have been picked. Now is the time to start praying for the team and about who YOU will be sponsoring. With the number of members we have, we should be able to have full Walks every time. Start thinking about agape for the up-coming walks! Again, pray for the team as it develops and throughout the coming months. Pray without ceasing! 72 Hour Prayer Vigil Remember your walk and seeing the posted prayer vigil. There were so many people praying for you and your fellow pilgrims and the team. Just 30 minutes to devote to the new pilgrims and the team members over their weekend will show that you truly care. Sign-up now to get a convenient time. Men s Walk #45 Prayer Vigil Sign in Women s Walk #45 Prayer Vigil Sign in De Colores Rich and Nancy Preston, Agape Chairs 2
3 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Congratulations! The registrations for the spring Men s Walk were the best yet for meeting the registration deadline! That compliance was appreciated so much! But now it is time to consider the registrations for fall. Please note that the registration for the Men s Walk comes very early in September. The timing is established in order for all the names to be published in the Rainbow Connection. The deadline for the Rainbow Connection is always the 15 th of the month. Obviously, thoughts of sponsorship must be considered and acted upon during July and August. Please prayerfully consider those you hope to sponsor and approach the possible Pilgrims before the last minute. May God be with you as you strive to serve Him in this way. DeColores! Will and Carolyn Rickman, Registrars MEN S WALK: October Registration deadline: September 14 WOMEN S WALK: October 31 November 3 Registration deadline: October 10 Greetings from the Musicians Corner Reunion: November 16 Living he loved me, Dying he saved me, Buried he carried my sins far away, Rising he justified, freely forever, One day he is coming, Oh glorious day, Oh glorious day - Casting Crowns Though not a Glorious Day, as that of the return of our Lord, but I am betting July 27th will be a great day. Why you ask? Because that s the day of the WNY Emmaus Picnic. It is being held at Hamburg Fairgrounds from 12:00 4:00. Singing and eating, two great things that go great together. So remember to throw your guitar... into your picnic basket and be ready to sing for your eats... On another note, I need replacing. My term on the board is coming to a close and I am looking for someone interested in taking over. I haven t set the bar very high so this is a great opportunity for someone to really shine. Please give me a call if your interested. DeColores and Fly with Christ, 3 Dan Benjamin Music Chair

6 CHRYSALIS Board of Directors * correction since last month From God s Holy Word. May He be glorified in its reading. May He speak to us through it. 1 God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! 2 As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; as wax melts before fire, so the wicked shall perish before God! 3 But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God they shall be jubilant with you! 4 Sing to God, sing praises to hi name; life up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! 5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. 6 God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. 7 O God when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, 8 the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. 9 Rain in abundance, O God, you shed abroad; you restored your inheritance as it languished; 10 your flock found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy.
