Names mean a lot, and parents are usually very careful about the names they choose for their children. They are usually just as careful in the names they avoid. For instance, no one names their child Judas. It just isn t done. Although that name at one time held a high and noble meaning, it no longer does. Judas is the Greek version of the name Judah, which means praised. It was the tribe of Judah that led the Israelites out of the slavery of Egypt and into the Promised Land. King David and Jesus were from that particular tribe. So was Judas Iscariot. His actions caused a mar against that name forever. The same goes for the name Benedict Arnold. Many parents will name their children after famous people (Martin Luther, George Washington, etc.), but you won t find any Benedict Arnold Joneses on the rolls in the local school. And names can put an awful burden on people. Shortly after South Carolina native Shawn Weatherly won the Miss Universe contest in 1980, many young girls were named Shawn.. A couple of friends named their first son Carter Redding. Named after a compassionate president who took his faith seriously and a blues singer who set our feet to dancing with songs like These Arms of Mine and our hearts to moaning with Sittin On The Dock of the Bay, he will have a great name to set him on the road. On the other hand, some names actually shape our lives. It s amazing how many Methodist preachers have the name John Wesley. I believe there are at least four in South Carolina alone. Martin Luther King Jr. was named not only after his father but after the great reformer. And just as Martin Luther called the church to reform its ways and live up to its original calling, Martin Luther King Jr. called our country to reform its ways and live up to the ideals expressed by its earliest documents. Here s a thought: What if we all lived up to the highest ideals of our names? Or even better yet, the name God gives us. That name is child of God. You are a child of God. May you know what that name means and live up to it. Mike Henderson

2 MUSIC Why Sing? Hebrews 2:12 pictures Jesus singing a song of praise. In this next passage we find a New Testament writer quoting a line from a rich messianic psalm, Psalm 22:22. The psalm seems to be used to illustrate the solidarity of the incarnate Christ and believers. Apparently embedded in Christ's incarnation is his commitment to participate in community worship. And if this is true, it helps to explain his commitment to local synagogues during his ministry. But this may also help explain why Jesus sings with his disciples. At the Lord s Supper, he raised his voice in worship of his Father, and by this he actively engaged in the disciples humanity. He shared their life, participating in their human experience (Hebrews 2:14). He sang to make possible his unique, substitutionary work on the cross. Christ was not ashamed to stand beside us. He was not ashamed to become our brother (Hebrews 2:11). What inconceivable mercy that he was not ashamed to suffer and die for us! His participation with humanity qualifies him to suffer as our punitive and substitutionary sacrifice (Hebrews 2:10). Jesus, as the perfect worshipper, sang hymns to the Father. We need to see that Jesus sang because he is our Brother. So my sisters and brothers... 3 From Kitchen/Refreshments I m sorry to relay that I have torn my calf muscle and ligaments on my right leg over the weekend. This is going to hinder my mobility in my kitchen duties. At this time I m not able to drive or get around very well. I will need additional help to move in the kitchen and tear down. I have a second in charge for the men s walk but not for women s walk. Kitchen Team sign ups for the spring walks are needed now! Men s Walk #145 February 28th, 2019 thru March 3rd, 2019 Women s Walk - #146 March 7th, 2019 thru March 10th, 2019 I overheard some one say they will get enough volunteers, we don t need to sign up! Another said people always show up even if the board is blank! Current kitchen Team Sign Up update: Our last walk we needed 1-2 people more in the kitchen than what we had! On Saturday we need at least 10 people to pull everything together! I currently have two people signed up for that night on both walks! I have had the kitchen sign ups.. up for several months and still only have 1-2 people committed to the Kitchen for each meal and no one on Breakfasts on all days are still blank! (Both Walks) Please remember we need cooks, clean up and dining room helpers and servers. Filling these team positions are needed to make the Kitchen Team successful again! Scheduled help needed is as follows for both Walks Friday, Saturday and Sunday: *Sunday dinner sign up is for Kitchen and Dining room breakdown. Breakfast 6-10 AM Lunch 10 AM - 2 PM Dinner 2 PM - 6 PM We could also use people who are willing to haul garbage, wash linens and rags during the weekends too! Pick up Ice during the weekend too! These are only a 1-2 hour commitment if that is all that you have time for! Please let me know if you can help with these items too! I could also use help for picking up supplies and kitchen move in on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. I can be reached at call/text or via DelAnn.Treat@icloud.com. From the Housing/Dorms/Luggage Help Needed for Setup and Take Down for the dorm rooms, conference room and kitchen for the upcoming men's and women's walks. Setup day will be Monday, February 25th at 9 am. Tear Down day will be Monday, March 11th at 9 am. Pleasant / Georgetown, take Highway 17 and continue on 17 business (not bypass). Turn right onto Atlantic Avenue, at a stop light. Go almost a mile, and turn left onto Dogwood Dr N. Garden City Chapel will be on the right. From points west and south, take Highway 17 bypass and turn left onto the Garden City Connector. At the end of the GC Connector, at the stop light, turn right onto 17 business. Turn left onto Atlantic Avenue at the stoplight. Go almost a mile, and turn left onto Dogwood Dr. N. Garden City Chapel will be on the right. Drop your Pilgrim off first at the check-in location next to the chapel. Luggage can then be dropped off under the middle dorm. Parking is not allowed under the dorms, so drive your car back to the parking lot across from the chapel.
