The prayer service will start at 10:00 a.m. at the three regional locations: Kendall UMC, 1814 Kendall Road, Kendall, NY. The Indian Falls UMC at 7908 Allegheny Road (Route 77) Corfu, NY and Little Valley UMC at 109 Court Street, Little Valley, NY. Liturgy available on community website. 2 Women s Walk # 44 Lay Director s remarks What a wonderful 3 days God blessed us with during Walk #44 this past April! I truly feel humbled by what he accomplishes thru us when we allow his presence to guide us. My list of thank you s begin with the Board for asking me to be a part of the Walk and continue on to the team (such a wonderful, dedicated team) for saying yes, to all the outside support we received during the weekend (I d name them all but I m worried I may forget someone as there were so many giving), to the community for all the prayers you said on our behalf, to the sponsors who brought us 15 wonderful women to the pilgrims who allowed us to be a part of their Walk with God. Ladies, you truly were a blessing to us as you shared with us, cried with us, laughed with us and fellowshipped with us those 72 hours. I know outside it rained much of the weekend but you never would have guessed that by the joy that lived inside the Hamburg church. We all felt the Son s presence from Thursday evening right on thru to Sunday night (and by Sunday the sun outside finally got into the action as well.) Please join with me in welcoming our new pilgrims to the Emmaus community. We hope to see you at gatherings, Emmaus events and at the next set of Walks in the Fall as we celebrate the gift of grace that God has provided to us all. DeColores! Christa Fathergill, Lay Director Women s Walk #44 Answering a call to serve Greetings Dear Brothers and Sisters; I want to tell you about an exciting opportunity for our Western New York Emmaus Community. In April, Ilyse Johnson, the North East Regional Leader invited me to join the International Advisory Committee for Walk to Emmaus/ Chrysalis. It is a three year term and meets in Nashville once a year the third weekend in October. After talking with Ilyse more and much prayer, I have accepted the position. The committee consists of 60 members that include the Emmaus/Chrysalis Regional Leaders and representatives from all over the United States. There are International representative from countries like the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Ghana, Germany, Philippines, Australia and South Africa. As well, there are Regional Leaders from the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe. We begin on Friday night with dinner and an ice breaker. The evening is concluded with several talks. On Saturday we spend our day in table groups- like a weekend. WE hear reports or educational themed talks. Then we hear requests or questions from communities that our table groups discuss and then a table member presents our answer or solution. Sunday we hear a final presentation and end our weekend with a worship service in the Upper Room Chapel. I see this as a wonderful opportunity for us to find out what other Emmaus/Chrysalis Communities in our country and around the world are doing. Perhaps how we are different or very similar. Also, we can see how Emmaus/Chrysalis is growing and where it s going. After the weekend I am responsible to report back to you about what happened during the weekend. I look forward to representing the Western New York Community for the next three years. DeColores, Lora Keiper 2

3 A Thought About the Time of Prayer and Fasting... Several weeks ago a young Woman at our church started a group for those who wanted to eat healthier. I joined up and at our last meeting we talked quite a bit about fasting. It was mentioned that in the Bible, fasting was used a lot but it seemed to not be mentioned or used much now a days. The group agreed that fasting would be a challenge (the eating plan does have a 21 day fast in it, note I will not be doing that) but it would be a time to draw into God. Later that night I went through that conversation again and I thought I m going to do that. I had a day off from work on a week day so I d have the house to myself. I admit I only fasted one meal breakfast--, but instead of downing a bowl of cereal I sat on our front porch to read my Bible and look over the devotionals from the eating plan. I spent time in prayer enjoying the quietness. We live on 13 acres of woods and streams and being a beautiful day I decided to walk our usual path in the woods. As I started a thought came to me, I was going to make this a prayer walk. Along the path there are certain spots that are special to our family, so I d decided stop at those places and pray. At the edge or our garden I thanked God for His provision and care for our physical needs. At a spot where our kids use to play at the edge of the stream in a natural clay deposit, I prayed for them. Another spot where I could hear the wind in the baby leaves and the different bird calls, I prayed for our Pastor, his family and our church family. Then toward the end of my journey at the spot where I could see our neighbors shed where he committed suicide this winter I prayed for those who hurting or depressed. As I walked out of the woods that morning I felt a sense of excitement and I had a list of topics to pray over. See I have felt led to put down prayer suggestions and post them in different site on that path, so my prayer walk will continue for me and any who walks that path. This is just my story of what a short time of prayer and fasting did for me recently. I am going to continue having fasting periods. I certainly wasn t missing my breakfast when I was feasting on God s word and talking in the beauty that He has surrounded us with. Please wouldn t you join us for our 2 nd annual time of Prayer and Fasting for Western New York Walk to Emmaus this Saturday, May 18 th at 10:00 a.m..? Come spend some planned time to stop everything and lean into God closer. Where ever you please keep our Community in your prayers as the Fall Teams are being formed and future pilgrims are being prayed over and invited to attend the Fall Walk. 4 CHRYSALIS ANNOUNCEMENT: Mission aborted! (Borrowed from a devotional by Pastor Don Schell) The question Why? does not always come with a ready answer you can understand or know here on earth. But just as you want your children to trust you, you can always trust God, who knows the answer. Keep that in mind the next time you are about to ask the question. Chrysalis has had to make a big decision, and after our bright and hopeful articles entered in last month s Rainbow Connection, this announcement is difficult. We are postponing the Boys Flight that had been scheduled for this July 2013, to have been held at Camp Asbury. Why? Many may ask. But as quoted above, there is not always an answer. Suffice it to say that time parameters could not be met in securing Team members, and we anticipated the same for Caterpillars. Things were just not falling in place and the mission became more and more difficult. No blame given to anyone. But with this state of things, the decision had to be made. We feel that we are not defeated, but, rather, feel that the Lord was making things obvious that this was not the right time. We will continue to work towards the next set of Flights for This additional time gives our Evangelism-chairperson, Laurie Manzer to come to your church/youth group! It gives each of us time to evangelize as individuals and find young woman and men (ages 15-18) that want to attend a Flight! My heartfelt thanks go out to Erich Jones (Team Lay Director), Pastor Ron Isaman (Team Spiritual Director), and all the men and women who had said, Yes! to join this Team! I know this has been a crazy rollercoaster ride this past year. I am sorry for that, but really feel that God would have us wait, and in that, be better prepared for the Flight He is preparing for us!! With that in mind, be encouraged by a Word from the Lord: Let s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we do not give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity we should do good to everyone especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:9-10 We will not give up, but rather, in time, we will Fly with Christ! Keep watch in future Rainbow Connection editions for updated mission news! Kathy Weil, Chrysalis Community Lay Director. Chrysalis Evangelism Though the boy's flight has been postponed, our work to spread the word of Chrysalis is not. We believe that the age group served by Chrysalis (ages 15-18) is a critical period in a person's Christian life and feel strongly that the message of love expressed through a weekend to each caterpillar is one that will help to carry a teen through the challenging years to come. Please prayerfully consider inviting representative(s) from WNY Chrysalis to come and talk to your youth groups. The presentation is not overly long, includes media, and is generally planned to be presented with a butterfly whenever schedules allow. Remember how you felt after your Emmaus/Chrysalis weekend? The gift you were given is available and waiting for young people and other adults alike. A gift unopened is like no gift at all... Contact the Board Representative for Evangelism, Laurie Manzer at for any questions, or for opportunities to share the message of Christ's love for young people expressed through Chrysalis. 5 REGISTRATION ALERT Congratulations and thank you to all who submitted their registration forms for the Spring Women s Walk on time! That truly made your job of collecting agape letters and our job much easier. This note is to remind everyone that the deadline for the Fall Men s Walk will come by mid -September. That, of course, is a time when most of us are not quite ready to escape the more relaxed pace of summer. Therefore, early deadlines may be last on our schedules. So, this is to encourage you to think about sponsorship NOW. And to please keep the exact registration deadline in your thoughts as the summer progresses. The date of the Men s Walk deadline and other information will be in the Rainbow Connection. We look forward to receiving the registrations and to the smiles on the faces of Pilgrims at Sendoff. De Colores! Will and Carolyn Rickman, Registrars 4th Day news! COMMUNITY PICNIC! De Colores! Contrary to the snowflakes I saw on Sunday morning, summer will soon be upon us! And with summer comes our annual Emmaus Picnic. After a few fits and false starts, I am pleased to announce that the Hamburg Gathering has agreed to host the 2013 picnic. It will be held on July 27 th, from 12-4 PM, with lunch being 1:00. The location is the Hamburg Fairgrounds, Quinby Drive entrance, located between South Park Ave., and McKinley Pkwy. (full directions below). Please bring a dish to pass and your musical instruments, and come out to join us for a day of fun and fellowship! More details will be available in next month s newsletter. Also, many thanks to all who helped and/or participated in the Walk #44 Reunion. It was great to see such a wonderful turnout, and what a blessing to have to move back the wall and set up more tables! Praise God for all His many blessings! Now is the time to start praying for the team and about who YOU will be sponsoring. With the number of members we have, we should be able to have full Walks every time.
