1 From the Community Lay Directors Volume 23 No. 1 Western New York Walk to Emmaus & Chrysalis January 2013 Chrysalis Flights are scheduled God is at work in the hearts & minds Of the team members and the Caterpillars. He is preparing the hearts of our community too!! Is He calling you to sponsor a caterpillar, to serve the team a meal at teaming, to provide food for their teaming, to finish and return the placemats & napkins that you signed up to decorate, or to sign up for the prayer vigil? Many more details to come! Be on the look out for specifics in an upcoming e-blast: The wise men from the east came to Jerusalem saying, 2 Where is he who has been born king of the Jews. For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. Once they found him the 11 fell down and worshiped him. Then opening their treasures, they offered him gifts..12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. Matthew 2:2-12 ESV If you were one of the wise men: Names of caterpillars for girls flight Talks to be given by girls team Names of boys team members Directions to Hamburg UMC (car pool with others from your gathering, or with your sponsor) Big House details, Etc, etc, etc. How long and how far would you travel to worship the king? What would you have given up to find the king? What would you offer the king once you found the king? Do you think you would have trusted & obeyed the worldly king or do you think that you would have trusted God s message through your dream? What if the wise men had disobeyed God, or given up their search, or gone back to Herod? While progress is being made, the community website remains... Deadline for February Rainbow Connection January 15 1
2 WALK TO EMMAUS WOMEN S WALK #43 Lay Director s Summary & Report First, I would like to thank all of you for your prayers, your Agape gifts, your service and your letters. I felt your support and God s guidance all through the three days of the Western New York Women s Walk to Emmaus #43. At the end of the three days, I think all 15 of our wonderful pilgrims had mastered saying that last phrase! I felt very blessed to have the opportunity to serve as lay director. God brought together a wonderful team. Unfortunately, one table leader had to drop off due to a family emergency, but she was in our hearts throughout the weekend. It was an honor and a joy to meet the 15 pilgrims and share this experience with them. As we all listened to the 15 talks, it was apparent that God was at work. Step by step, each of us grew closer to each other and closer to the Lord. The pilgrims demonstrated their response to the talks with great enthusiasm. As they sang Here I Am Lord, I felt that they were ready to return home ready to serve with a renewed sense of purpose. In Isaiah 2:5, it says, O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! I believe that all of us on Walk #43 did just that. 3 Chrysalis Board of Directors Dedication Service November 18, 2012 Chrysalis and Emmaus are partners in the ministry God has entrusted to this movement, to produce servant leaders for the church and for God s mission in the world. Chrysalis is the primary mission outreach of Emmaus to and with young people. Notations from National Emmaus/Chrysalis writings Fly With Christ! Greetings dear and faithful friends! WNY Chrysalis is at an exciting stage; ready to fly! Our Girls Flight is this month, January 19-21, and the Boys Flight follows on February 16-18, both, at Hamburg UMC, Hamburg, NY. Arrival time for both events is on Saturday morning at 8:00am, with Send-off and dedication services for the Community and Sponsors following the Caterpillars take-off. We hold both the Candlelight service and Closing ceremony that are also experienced on an Emmaus weekend. Please come out and support the new Caterpillars with this expression of Agape love! Arrival for the Candlelight service on Sunday is 8:00pm. Please note this day change, as our weekend runs from Saturday to Monday, which is different from the Emmaus Walks! Closing then is on Monday, with Community coming at 3:30pm. Please look for the signs to direct you to your correct location as you arrive. All other info you may need to participate are listed here in the Rainbow Connection! The Girls Team, Boys Team, Registration connections, the Hamburg UMC location and directions are all available. The only thing we could not enter is the list of names of the Caterpillars, as this was not logistically possible to co-ordinate with deadline dates and publishing dates. Hopefully you have or will receive an additional to update you! We are so appreciative of the support the Emmaus/Chrysalis Community has given us in the past and look forward to your continued involvement this year for Flights #14! See you in Hamburg, and until then, Fly with Christ! Kathy Weil, Chrysalis Community Lay Director/Board Chair 3

5 Christmas greetings to all, As we look back at the past year we are very thankful for all the blessings that God has shared with us. WNY Emmaus & WNY Chrysalis has been blessed with four walks & two flights, and many strengthened & stronger Christians have come from these walks. That is over 80 new pilgrims/ butterflies in 2012! That is just awesome. God s kingdom is being richly blessed by these new members fourth day & next steps journey. At the Christmas party in Hilton we announced that Pastor Rick Koch will be serving as WNY Community Spiritual Director for the next three years. We thank all who voted, and also thank Pastor Rick & Pastor Joan Zimmerman for accepting the nomination for SD. We also announced that Jeff & Char Smith have accepted the Supplies position on the Emmaus Board. A great time was had at the Christmas party, it was estimated that about 70 people were in attendance. We enjoyed singing Christmas carols, listening to poems, songs and skits. As 2013 begins we need to continue praying for the upcoming flights & walks. Especially be praying on whom God is calling you to sponsor. We have really been blessed with a hard working Board of Directors. It is also great to witness so many stepping up and helping in any way during a walk or flight. When we all continue to step up and do our part, the entire event will bring glory to God. We look forward to serving WNY Walk to Emmaus & Chrysalis in 2013, and look forward to working together with you as we each do our part. Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, Jim & Lora Community Lay Directors Christmas shopping? Please consider this: The most lasting gift you may give could be the gift of sponsorship on The Walk to Emmaus or Chrysalis. CHRISTMAS PARTY It was a pleasure for West Bank Gathering to host the Christmas party for the Western New York Emmaus community. Sixty-six people enjoyed a big variety of delicious snacks and desserts with lots of good conversation and much laughter. The entertainment included inspirational thoughts and some hilarious skits. (In fact, we re still chuckling!) If you were present, West Bank thanks you for being there. And if you were absent, please know you were sincerely missed. May your Christmas be filled with His love and your New Year over-flowing with His blessings and perfect peace. The West Bank Gathering 5

DATES TO REMEMBER Men s Spring Walk: March Registration deadline: February 21 Women s Spring Walk: April Registration deadline: March 22 Pray Mark your calendars Meet with those that God is calling you to sponsor Submit applications early AGAPE The teams for Walk s 44 are almost complete. We need to pray for the teams as they organize and get ready for the walk. We also need to pray about sponsoring a pilgrim for these walks there is not a lot of time to sponsor a sufficient number to participate. Think hard and pray hard and work on getting a full group of pilgrims. There are a number of agape envelopes out being worked on (placemats and napkins). These can either me mailed to us or given to some on the board of directors to get to us. Also gatherings and individuals it s not too early to start working on agape for the team and pilgrims. March will be here very soon for the Men s walk and April for the Women s. 72 HOUR PRAYER VIGIL SIGN-UP Men s Walk #44 Women s Walk #44 If you have trouble getting into the prayer vigil sign up through the links above. 10 Merry Christmas WNY Emmaus, I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as your Community Spiritual Director for the past three years. It has been a privilege and honor to work with and for you. While I won't miss the monthly drives from the Finger Lakes to Attica for the WNY Board meetings, I will miss the monthly fellowship time I've enjoyed with the other Board members. And it is joy to announce that Rev. Rick Koch is my successor. I've gotten to know Rick while serving on teams and then on the Board together. His gentle and caring spirit will serve you well in the next three years. I know you will give him the same support and care I've enjoyed. Thanks! I look forward to seeing you at Walks and community events in the years to come. I may live in the Finger Lakes but you will always be a part of my heart. And if you ever wander over to this area, drop in and see me at Seneca Castle UMC or drop me a note at pastornillaowen@gmail.com DeColores, Pastor Nilla Fourth Day Well, if you missed the Annual Emmaus Christmas Party, you missed a real gala event. Sixty-two revelers were treated to wonderful entertainment: original song and poetry, entertaining and thought provoking skits, and a visit from the original cast of Sister Act. There was also lots of mingling, singing, and of course, awesome snacks. The thing that makes the Emmaus Party so special is that we all remember and celebrate the real reason for the season and thank God for the gift of his Son. We thank God for the opportunity to serve on the Board the past three years. It has been a privilege and a joy. Thanks to all who helped with Fourth Day events, thanks to Mike Quesenberry for taking over our spot, and blessings on the new Board of Directors. Planning to continue in His service, Sue and Marty Doherty And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
